Six killed in fire on Park Street in Kolkata

KOLKATA: Six persons were killed and 20 others injured in a devastating fire that swept through a 150-year-old multi-storeyed building housing offices and residences on upscale Park Street on Tuesday.

The fire broke out at 2:15pm, but there was confusion on which floor of the six-storey building, Stephen Court, it broke out with panic gripping those trapped inside.

The toll could rise, fire services minister Pratim Chatterjee said.

The Stephen Court, located in the heart of the city, houses the iconic 100-year-old Flury's confectionery house and a large music store called Music World and several other offices.

Of the six casualties, a man, identified as Sourav Barik leapt to his death, while a woman Richa Krishnan fell when she lost her grip while being evacuated by firemen with the help of a rope.

Three others - Pradip Chokhalia, Vivek Upadhyay and Bikash Agarwala - died of burns in hospital, home secretary Ardhendu Sen told reporters.

The blaze could not be brought under control till 8pm, he said.

Commissioner of Kolkata Police Gautam Chakraborty, however, said the blaze on the third and fourth floors were under control, while firemen failed to establish contact with employees of a firm, Microsystems, in the building.

A 70-metre ladder, the world's second tallest, was used to rescue the trapped people, while eight bowzers and 45 fire engines were deployed, Chatterjee said.

Thick smoke and flames engulfed the building as some of the people trapped in the building came out on ledges driven by the flames inside.

The wooden staircase of the building went up in flames and parts of the building crumbled as around 300 firemen fought the blaze with 40 tenders and snorkel ladders, the Fire Services minister said.

"It's an old building and its fire-resistance capacity is not known. I can't say if the building can be saved considering the degree of devastation," he said.

Chatterjee said that fire-fighters were rescuing the trapped persons one by one. He said there was no lack of water to fight the fire.

Railway minister Mamata Banerjee said, "I spoke to the defence ministry for sending the army. The defence ministry has issued instructions to send the army.

"The West Bengal government should have sought the help of the army, but I don't know why they have not done it," she told reporters at the scene of the fire.

West governor M K Narayanan visited the spot. Forensic experts will examine the site on Wednesday.

Live-in relationship, pre-marital sex not an offence: SC

NEW DELHI: In an observation that will cheer votaries of pre-marital sex and live-in-partners, the Supreme Court on Tuesday opined that a man and woman living together without marriage cannot be construed as an offence.

"When two adult people want to live together what is the offence. Does it amount to an offence? Living together is not an offence. It cannot be an offence," a three judge bench of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Deepak Verma and B S Chauhan observed.

The court said even Lord Krishna and Radha lived together according to mythology.

The apex court said there was no law which prohibits live-in relationship or pre-marital sex.

The apex court made the observation while reserving its judgement on a special leave petiton filed by noted south Indian actress Khusboo seeking to quash 22 criminal cases filed against her after she allegedly endorsed pre-maritial sex in interviews to various magazines in 2005.

The judges grilled the counsel for some of the complainants in the case and repeatedly stressed that the perceived immoral activities cannot be branded as offence.

The argument of the counsel was that her comments allegedly endorsing pre-marital sex would adversely affect the minds of young people leading to decay in moral values and country's ethos.

"Please tell us what is the offence and under which section. Living together is a right to life," the apex court said apparently referring to Article 21 which granted right to life and liberty as a Fundamental Right.

The apex court further said the views expressed by Khusboo were personal.

"How does it concern you? We are not bothered. At the most it is a personal view. How is it an offence? Under which provision of the law?" the bench asked the counsel.

The apex court further asked the complainants to produce evidence to show if any girls eloped from their homes after the said interview.

"How many homes have been affected can you tell us," the bench asked while enquiring whether the complainants had daughters. When the response was in the negative, they shot back, "Then, how are you adversely affected?"

Khusboo had approached the apex court after the Madrash High Court in 2008 dismissed her plea for quashing the criminal cases filed against her throughout Tamil Nadu.

Vacuum at the top without Vajpayee: Shatrughan

Lucknow: Days after he vent his frustration over selection of the new team of BJP office bearers, Shatrughan Sinha on Tuesday said that there is a vacuum at the top in the absence of Atal Bihari Vajpayee coupled with certain other factors.

In an informal interaction with reporters here, Sinha said the BJP leadership was weakened after the retirement of Vajpayee from active politics. He said there were also certain other factors but declined to elaborate.

The BJP leader, however, sought to put a lid on the controversy following his outburst against party President Nitin Gadkari that deserving candidates had been ignored in the new team announced last week.

"Whatever I had to say on the executive committee issue I have told my party President and also apprised the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj and would not react on it further," Sinha said insisting that he had not violated discipline by "expressing his reservations".

The BJP MP from Patna asked his party to concentrate on the coming "crucial" assembly elections in Bihar and sort out the problems of factionalism in the party. Sinha, who was here for the promotion of his son, Luv Sinha's debut film "Sadiyan" releasing early next month, asked the party to project a strong and united face.

"In this election year, it is most important for the party to address all its problems and see as to why the recent results to the by elections had not been favourable", he said adding that though the present Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is doing good work, the results indicated that there is something wrong somewhere and it needed to be rectified immediately.

"We have to ensure that Bihar does not go the Jharkhand way," he said adding that besides doing good work it is also important to ensure that people are perceiving it.

The BJP MP also coined a new slogan 'Bihar rising" instead of "Bihar Shining" which, he said, would be more apt as a lot still needs to be done in that state. Sinha regretted at being ignored by the party in his home state. "I was neither invited for the Bihar diwas programme nor am called for the various functions of the chief minister there", he said adding in a lighter vein that perhaps "some people feel insecure because of my popularity".

On the controversy raised over his comments on the new team, Sinha said that he only wanted deserving and capable people should get their rightful place in the party and the undeserving are not given priority over them.

On the women reservation issue, he said that it has been highly politicised as some "vested interests" had been trying to gain political mileage out of it.

"There are bound to be different views on an issue like this but a consensus should be evolved through all party meeting", he said suggesting "counselling" for those having views against it as the bill aims to " change people's mentality over the subject".

Govt alerts Naxal-hit states on possible attack on rail network

New Delhi: The government has alerted Naxal affected states against possible Maoist attacks on railway networks in wake of the Left extremists targeting a Rajdhani express in Bihar by blasting the rail tracks.

The Home Ministry has issued the alert to West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Chhattisgarh apprehending attacks by Naxalites on trains and railway infrastructure as any sabotage on the network can result in large scale damages, official sources said.

The Home Ministry has also requested the Railway Ministry to deploy adequate manpower to provide security to rail operations and passengers and take necessary precautionary measures.

The alert has been issued after the latest attack near Gaya, when Maoists targeted a Rajdhani express blasting the rail tracks in which the passengers had a miraculous escape after ten coaches derailed. The attack came during the 48-hour 'bandh' call given by Naxals on Monday in the state along with six others.

"The states should also utilise the services of central para-military forces, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Home guards, civil defence and village defence committees in order to enhance and ensure the security of trains and other railway property," they said.

Sources said the Home Ministry has issued an alert about possible Naxal attacks on the railway networks running through Naxal-affected areas about a fortnight ago.

Railway properties are becoming more and more vulnerable to Maoist attacks with Naxals blowing up tracks and stations over 60 times across the country in the past five years.

A terrorist has no religion, says Gadkari

New Delhi: BJP president Nitin Gadkari says that terrorists have no religion and cannot be categorised as a Hindu or a Muslim.
Gadkari also alleged that "pseudo secularists" were deliberately giving a religion tag for a terrorist and said the term 'secularism' is now being used for minority appeasement.

"... terrorist has no creed, caste or religion. A God fearing Hindu will not kill an innocent Muslim and similarly, a god fearing Muslim will not kill an innocent Hindu, and if he is doing so, then he is a terrorist who does not belong to any religion," he said at the 'dedication ceremony' for over 100 professionals as volunteers for the BJP yesterday.

He termed as "propaganda" that Hindutva was against Muslims and said people were "misrepresenting" the facts to further their vested interests.

Maintaining that BJP was in favour of equality in social and economic spheres for all, he said "We believe in the philosophy of 'vasudev kutumbhkam' (world is one family)."

Terming Hindutva as the "spirit" of BJP, Gadkari said it cannot be a subject of political debate and it can never be an agenda for any political party. He lamented that the image of Hindutva had overshadowed its real meaning.

"Whether someone likes it or not, the subject has been a matter of debate for the last 40 years in politics. I feel people should know the reality (of what Hindutva means) after serious thinking.

"It is a tragedy of image versus reality. Letters can change but not the spirit. Hindutva is our philosophy, it is our spirit... which cannot change," he added.

He said it was necessary that the new generation was taught the real meaning of Hindutva, adding, "A proper focus on the issue is the need of the hour".

RSS ideologue M G Vaidya, who also spoke, said that for BJP, distancing itself from Hindutva would mean distancing itself from RSS and its core values.

He recalled that when the issue of BJP's relations vis-a-vis Hindutva was being debated in 2004, he had said BJP has moved along a particular line from where it would not be appropriate to pull it back.

"I had said that if BJP disassociates itself from Hindutva, then the RSS would take a call on whether to keep Hindutva in politics or not," he added.

Towards watchdogs with bite

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has asked the Planning Commission to prepare a draft bill seeking stakeholders comments on regulatory reforms, amid complaints from certain quarters about the haphazard functioning of the current set of watchdogs.
"An Approach Paper on the subject was published by the Planning Commission after extensive consultations with experts and stakeholders. I have asked the commission to prepare a draft bill outlining the next stage of regulatory reforms," he said at a conference on infrastructure today.

He said the government would welcome views of all stakeholders in this very important area.

"We need to review the approach that should guide our regulatory institutions in different sectors," Singh said.

To a question from the floor that the government should bring out an omnibus legislation to set up "infrastructure czar" to override all other regulations, Singh said the government would look into suggestions.

Earlier, the Planning Commission had come out with an Approach Paper on regulatory reforms, saying it saw a need to bring regulators under the common format as there are many independent watchdogs for various sectors while many areas do not have any regulators.

The country has several regulators such as TRAI for telecom and broadcast industry, SEBI for the capital markets and IRDA for the insurance industry.

The paper said it wished to deal with the "somewhat haphazard and uneven approach to regulation across and within the different sectors of the economy resulting in inadequate and expensive reform".

The paper also said there is no energy sector regulator, while the social sector lacks any independent and transparent regulation.

The paper pointed out TAMP (Tariff Authority for Major Ports) has limited authority in determining tariffs for major ports, while AAI (Airports Authority of India) is operator and regulator of airports, and DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) along with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security is responsible for safety and technical aspects.

India to grow 8.5% next fiscal: PM

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh exuded confidence the economy would grow by 8.5 per cent in the next fiscal and accelerate to 9 per cent the following year from an estimated 7.2 per cent this fiscal.

Going forward, the country should step up the pace of economic expansion to above 10 per cent per annum in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2107) to generate employment for the youth and remove poverty, the Prime Minister said at a conference on building infrastructure hosted by the Planning Commission.

"We expect to achieve 8.5 per cent growth rate in the year 2010-11... I hope we can achieve growth rate of 9 per cent in the year 2011-12," he said.

However, the country should do even better, he said.

"For eliminating poverty and providing productive employment for our young population in the near future, we must aim at accelerating the pace of economic growth to above 10 per cent per annum. This is the growth target which we should work towards for the 12th Five Year Plan," Singh said.

The Prime Minister's remarks assume importance since the original target of nine per cent growth rate in the 11th Five Year Plan is set for a downward revision to little over 8 per cent.

After growing at over 9 per cent in the three preceding year, India's economic growth declined to 6.7 per cent last fiscal due to the global financial crisis.

However, due to the three fiscal stimulus packages given by the Government to prop up the economy, the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) has estimated economic growth at 7.2 per cent in the current fiscal.

Google units exposed to angry Beijing

Google's gambit in pulling the plug on its flagship search engine in China leaves its remaining operations there exposed to the whimsy of Beijing, whose initial reaction is far from reassuring.

Google plans to maintain an advertising sales force as well as its large research and development operations in China, but risks losing market share, revenue and staff to rivals including market leader Baidu, up-and-comer Tencent and US heavyweight Microsoft.

Opportunities to develop and market its Android and Chrome operating systems for cellphones and PCs in China could also be threatened, a potential setback for partners such as handset makers Dell and Lenovo.

"There's no doubt the Chinese might make life difficult for Google," said Vivek Couto, an analyst at Media Partners Asia. "But they don't want to go directly after them. China also has to be a bit cautious."

Google's decision to shut its mainland Chinese-language portal and reroute searches to its Hong Kong-based site to avoid the self-censorship Beijing demands was seen more as an escalation than a compromise in the two-month old dispute.

Though tensions could ease after an initial round of finger-pointing, the uncertainty and need for Beijing's tolerance, if not support, threaten Google's prospects in the world's largest Internet market.

Initial indications that Google's gambit was getting a chilly reception came from the official Xinhua news agency, which cited an unnamed official calling the move "totally wrong" and in violation of Google's written promises.

Analyst estimates of Google's annual revenue in China range from $300 million to roughly $600 million, a small portion of its $24 billion in annual revenue.

OTHERS EXPOSED

Other stakeholders exposed to Google's actions include cellphone makers like Dell and Lenovo, which are both developing Android-based phones for China, as well as the hundreds of people who independently sell ads and develop software for Google's products.

Spokeswomen at Lenovo and China Mobile, which is planning to offer the Dell Android phones on its network, had no immediate comment.

Meantime, other search sites operators stand ready to benefit most form Google's withdrawal, most notably Baidu -- which has 60 per cent of China's search market -- and others such as fast-growing Tencent, analysts said. "It will benefit everybody in China, but the obvious immediate beneficiary will be Baidu," said CLSA analyst Elinor Leung. Microsoft, which has launched a beta version of its Bing search site in China, could also pick up market share, she added.

Other Web players could benefit as well if Google decides to use them as a back-door strategy to invest in China's Internet market. Yahoo used a similar strategy after abandoning its own efforts in China in favor of buying 40 per cent of leading China e-commerce operator Alibaba Group.

CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC

Despite the potential for collateral damage, observers and those who work for Google were cautiously optimistic that the current conflict wouldn't spiral out of control, saying such escalation was in no one's interest.

Google's interest in the market is already clear.

In direct terms, Google may have to give up some or all of its revenue derived from China's search market, depending on whether its advertisers follow it to its redirected China site at google.com.hk.

But China also has an interest in placating Western governments that have been critical of its heavy-handed approach to media control and civil rights. China also needs major global tech firms like Google to develop its own domestic industries so they can someday compete on the global stage.

"If Google leaves its R&D unit in its current headquarters in Beijing ... the staff will remain, so I think our activities will continue," said Arthur Wang, chairman of Beijing Google Technology User Group, one of Google's largest software development groups.

Advertisers could take a more cautious approach until they see if traffic to Google's Hong Kong site catering to mainland Chinese Web surfers gets the same traffic as its shuttered China site, said Kaiser Kuo, a China-based technology commentator.

"Buying on a redirected site that could be at any moment blocked is a risky strategy," he said. "So I think people are going to read the tea leaves and see what the government is going to do in this situation before making any commitments."

Edward Yu, an analyst a China research firm Analysys, was confident Google could continue to operate effectively in China.

"In the short term, some officials may be upset about Google rerouting its operations," he said. "But when thinks cool down, I think the other part of their operations are not affected as long as they comply with the regulations," he said.

IPL auction cap raised to $7 mn

Indian Premier League on Tuesday said that each team would now be allowed to keep a purse of USD seven million (about Rs 35 crore) to bid for players, up from the prevailing level of USD five million.

"This would mean USD 70 million for the 10 teams every year and USD 210 million (about Rs 1,000 crore) in three years... this will be the single largest auction in sporting world... you see even in art auctions the bids are for a few millions and that too for total ownership.

"In IPL, the amount that the teams would spend on players would be huge for having the contract for just three years," IPL Commissioner and Chairman Lalit Modi said.

After winning team Pune with a staggering bid of over Rs 1,700 crore, Sahara Group chief Subroto Roy had suggested that IPL should increase the ceiling on the cap for each team to participate in the auction.

Roy's acquisition comes in the midst of the third season of IPL, where eight teams are vying for honour in the over month-long tournament. Rendezvous World Sports bagged the Kochi team, taking the total number to 10, which Modi said would remain intact for at least seven years.

Modi said Roy has a long association with cricket India, "he understands the game and his bid, though slightly higher than what he anticipated, proved that IPL has the value."

The enhanced cap for auctioning would be for three years from IPL season-IV beginning next year, he said, adding that details of the increased ceiling as also the auction programme would be announced shortly after the ongoing tournament.

Pooh-poohing the doomsayers and sceptics of IPL, he said that doubts were raised right from the time the league was launched and even when the first tournament was played. Independent brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance has said the IPL's brand value has more than doubled to USD 4.13 billion this year, reflecting the format's success.

"Even the IPL season-II was questioned as it was being played on foreign soil and now despite the success the questions are being asked how long? We are making a few crores a day... every time I put a number in the market be it for the players or bids, people say it is not achievable but I have delivered every time," he said.

On the contrary, he said that every such criticism would make him more determined about the success as sceptics did not talk with knowledge and "I have worked on figures for 15 years days in and days out.

Modi said that the three-year lock-in period would continue even in the next round of bidding and should a player or team desire for a change there are "separate trading windows for the purpose".

Tendulkar rules out playing Twenty20 World Cup

New Delhi: Master batsman Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday ruled out playing in this year's Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies, saying he sticks to his stance of not playing Twenty20 Internationals anymore.

Even though Tendulkar is not among the 30 probables already selected for the April 30-May 16 event, former captain Sunil Gavaskar led the chorus, asking Tendulkar, who is in sensational form, to change his stance and play in the Twenty20 World Cup.

Tendulkar, however, dismissed the possibility.

"I will not be playing the ICC World Twenty20. I have not played Twenty20 Internationals from 2007 onwards and I don't think it should become an issue now," Tendulkar told CNN-IBN channel.

Tendulkar, along with senior players Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, had opted out of the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup, which Indian won under Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy.

Since then, Tendulkar has kept himself out of Twenty20 Internationals, saying he did not want to upset the team which had won the 2007 World Cup.

Not summoned by SIT on March 21: Modi

Gandhinagar: Giving a new twist, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who refused to appear before the SIT, on Monday called as a ‘lie’ that the Supreme-court appointed panel had fixed March 21 for questioning him in connection with the 2002 riots.
Breaking his silence on the summons by the Special Investigating Team(SIT), Modi wrote an open letter apparently drafted in consultation with party colleague and legal eagle Arun Jaitley in which he said he will respond to the SIT fully respecting the law and keeping in view the dignity of a body appointed by the Supreme Court.

Jaitley, who met Modi, himself released the ‘carefully worded’ letter of the chief minister to the media calling reports of March 21 for his appearance as entirely incorrect.

In another development on Modi's role during the communal violence, the Gujarat High Court asked the Nanavati Commission, which is probing the riots, to clarify by April 1 whether it has taken a final decision not to summon the chief minister for questioning.

The 59-year-old BJP leader in the open letter said, "SIT had not fixed March 21, 2010 for my appearance. To say that I was summoned on March 21 is completely false."

SIT Chief R K Raghavan had on March 11 said Modi was summoned to appear before SIT for questioning on March 21. The SIT office was kept open the whole day on Sunday but the chief minister did not turn up.

Without delving on the debate over the date, Raghavan said on Monday that there was no response from Modi or his office with regard to the summons till now.

SIT will wait for the response from Modi with regard to the summons issued by them, SIT sources said. Modi said, "It is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that SIT summons Narendra Modi on March 21, 2010"

He further said, "The date of 21st March 2010 was invented by some vested interests and as part of their effort to interfere in the due process of law. They wanted to paint me as a person who refused to respond to the SIT".

The Chief Minister was also unsparing in his attack on "vested interests" who he said have lost no opportunity to defame Gujarat since 2002. Rushing to the defence of Modi, Jaitley said the nation has been misled on the basis of a "lie".

"Gujarat government and CM Modi has said said they have been and will cooperate with the legal process of the country as well as fully cooperate with SIT," he added.

Jaitley said that the entire debate that Modi was supposed to appear before SIT and did not, showing disrespect to Supreme Court lacked any basis.

The special CBI court in Patna has convicted Mantu Kumar, Udai Kumar and Pinku Ravidas in the murder case of Dubey, a young engineer working in the Golden Quadrilateral Project of National Highway Authority of India, CBI spokesperson said in a statement, adding the quantum of sentence will be pronounced on March 27.

The young IIT-Kanpur alumni, who had blown the lid off various instances of large-scale flouting of rules in the Golden Quadrilateral Project was shot dead in the early hours of November 27, 2003 in front of Circuit House, Gaya, Bihar.

His murder sparked protests across the country amidst calls for a legislation to protect whistleblowers who expose corruption.

The CBI, which had taken over the investigation of the case from Bihar police on December 14, 2003 had filed a chargesheet in the case on September 3, 2004.

Mantu was convicted under sections for murder, voluntary causing hurt in committing robbery and the Arms Act for possessing unlicensed weapon, the statement said.

The other two accused persons were convicted for murder committed in furtherance of common intention and for voluntary causing hurt in committing robbery, it said.

"During the investigation, CBI arrested four persons, namely Mantu, Udai, Pinku and Sharvan Kumar, all residents of Katari village in Gaya, Bihar.

"They had all assembled near Circuit House, Gaya on the fateful intervening night of November 26/27, 2003. Around 3.30 AM on November 27, when Dubey was passing in front of Circuit House, Gaya in a cycle-rickshaw, the accused persons robbed him of his belongings and during the ensuing scuffle, Mantu shot him dead with a .315 country-made weapon," the statement said.

The CBI said a briefcase containing documents belonging to Dubey including his Identity Card were recovered from an abandoned well and also the country-made pistol were recovered during investigation.

The agency said Sharvan gave full and voluntary disclosure about the incident and was made an approver.

26/11 trial: Court rejects plea to examine Headley as witness

Mumbai: A special 26/11 court on Monday rejected the plea of one of the arrested accused Sabauddin Ahmed seeking to examine US terror accused David Headley as court witness via video-conference.

Judge M L Tahilyani said he had rejected a similar plea earlier and no fresh grounds have been made by Sabauddin in the application to examine Headley as a court witness in the November 26 terror attacks.

Sabauddin in his application had attached a copy of the guilt plea bargain between Headley and the US government.

The court, however, said it cannot take cognisance of the copy as it was downloaded from the internet and not an authentic copy.

The court has also restrained Sabauddin's lawyer Ejaz Naqvi from circulating the copy to anyone else.

Headley, arrested by the FBI in October last year, had last week pleaded guilty to all the charges levelled against him, including his involvement in the 26/11 terror attacks.

Sabauddin along with another Indian national Faheem Ansari and lone surviving Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab are facing a trial for their alleged involvement in the conspiracy of the terror attack and for the murder of 166 persons.

Sabauddin and Faheem have been accused of preparing maps of the sites that were targeted and of supplying them to members of terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Govt mulls differential pricing for Euro IV

New Delhi: The government is considering differential pricing for Euro IV-compliant fuel to be sold in select cities from April 1, Oil Secretary S. Sundareshan said on Monday.

He did not give details.

India is keen to cut emissions as Asia's third-largest economy expands rapidly and aim to catch up with fuel quality in Europe, which now follows Euro V standards.

It has been gradually reducing sulphur from 2000, when fuel had 500 parts per million (ppm). Motorists in major cities will now move to Euro-IV norms, locally known as Bharat Stage-IV, that allow up to 50 ppm sulphur.

In January, India decided to adhere to an April deadline for the Euro IV launch in major cities. The roll out of Euro III specifications in the rest of the country has been staggered until October.

India eyes China partnerships for roads, rail

Hong Kong : India is interested in partnerships with China for road and high-speed rail projects, an govt official said on Monday.

"We would like to foster partnership (between) India and China in infrastructure -- especially for high speed railway networks, there is a very good opportunity for China and India," said Kamal Nath, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, speaking at the Credit Suisse Asian Investment Conference in Hong Kong.

India is inviting overseas participation in the country's road projects but the government hasn't publicly discussed plans for high-speed rail.

In July last year, Nath said he expected foreign investors to fund half of the $20 billion per year earmarked for road construction and was seeking investment from pension funds and private equity.

India will need to spend $70 billion building roads over the next three years as it looks to infrastructure spending to stimulate demand and boost the economy. Of the total, $40 billion could come from private investors, with a quarter of that coming for overseas.

Any partnership with Chinese firms could be politically sensitive in India, where many regard Chinese companies with suspicion.

In January, three engineers with a Chinese construction firm were arrested and charged with homicide in connection with a chimney collapse that killed 41 people in central India. The government has also recently tightened visa requirements for Chinese workers.

India has launched the world's biggest public-private partnership programme to develop 15,000 km of roads and highways over the next three years.

Nath, who assumed his current post in May 2009 after serving as commerce and industry minister from 2004, has been carrying out road shows since last year to drum up overseas investment for road projects.

2 new IPL teams cost more than first 8 squads together

CHENNAI/MUMBAI: Barely two years ago, when Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd made the highest bid for an Indian Premier League franchise (Rs 441 crore for Mumbai), many termed it as a gamble on a risky concept.

The IPL sure has come a long way in a short time, with the Sahara group on Sunday bidding Rs 1,702 crore for Pune and Rendezvous Sports World forking out Rs 1,533 crore for Kochi.

In fact, these two bids, worth a total of about Rs 3,235 crore, add up to more than the Rs 2,853 crore collectively paid by the existing eight franchise owners in the first auction, on January 24, 2008.

The IPL is invariably full of surprises and Sunday was no different. Favourites Adani Group and VC Digital (Videocon Group) were pipped by Sahara and a consortium of real estate players and businessmen brought together by Union minister Shashi Tharoor under the banner of Rendezvous Sports.

The two new teams will become part of IPL in the 2011 edition. The franchises will be valid for 10 years.

The bidding, conducted behind closed doors, lasted less than an hour after the contenders trooped into a hotel in Chennai.

The base price for each team was $225 million, more than four times the rate at which the first IPL auction began in 2008.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi said five eligible bids were received in all, which included Rendezvous Sports, Sahara, Aman Vohra, Adani and VC Digital. There was a dash of glamour with Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan dropping in to represent some groups.

Sahara topped with a $370-million (Rs 1,702 crore) bid for a clutch of cities which included Ahmedabad, Nagpur or Pune. Eventually, the Subrata Roy-controlled group opted for Pune.

Live IPL updates: Chris Gayle slams maiden IPL fifty

NEW DELHI: Chris Gayle slammed maiden IPL fifty to lead Kolkata Knight Riders run charge against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League encounter at Brabourne stadium, Mumbai on Monday.

Scorecard

Chris Gayle completed his fifty in 47 balls hitting five fours and a six.

Knight Riders lost skipper Sourav Ganguly (31) after he put up a solid 70-run opening partnership with Chris Gayle.

Ganguly hit five fours in his 34-ball knock before being clean bowled by former international teammate Harbhajan Singh in the 11th over.

Ganguly started his innings with a bang as he hit medium pacer Ryan McLaren for three consecutive fours in the third over of the match.

Earlier, Knight Riders skipper Sourav Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat against Mumbai at Brabourne stadium.

Their winning streaks snapped, hosts Mumbai as well as visitors Kolkata would be anxious to regain that momentum as they clash in the 17th IPL match.

Sachin Tendulkar-led MI, after starting off their campaign in great style by winning the opening two ties, came a cropper at the Brabourne Stadium last night against a highly-disciplined effort by Anil Kumble's Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Sourav Ganguly-captained KKR too began their campaign after two largely unsuccessful editions by fashioning upset away victories against defending champions Deccan Chargers and runners-up RCB before losing the next two ties.

These two charismatic captains, who have rubbed shoulders over more than a decade and a half for India, would be anxious to rediscover the magic potion for their teams to cut the losing streak before it spoils their campaign.

Teams:

Mumbai Indians: Sachin Tendulkar (capt), Dwayne Bravo, Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ryan McLaren, Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, Rajagopal Sathish, Aditya Tare (wk), Saurabh Tiwary.

Kolkata Knight Riders: Sourav Ganguly (capt), Chris Gayle, Shane Bond, Murali Kartik, Angelo Mathews, Cheteshwar Pujara, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Owais Shah, Ishant Sharma, Harpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh.

Wish Sachin to captain & Bachchans to promote team: Sahara

New Delhi:
Having missed the opportunity to join IPL in the first round of bidding, Sahara group chief Subroto Roy on Monday said that he would want Sachin Tendulkar to captain the Pune franchise that the group won with a bid of over Rs 1,700 crore.

"Who would not... I certainly would want Sachin to captain if he is available," Roy, whose group is team sponsor of the Indian cricketing side, said over telephone.

Sachin currently leads Mumbai Indians IPL franchise owned by Nita and Mukesh Ambani.

Players are coming up for auction in September for the next three years and key players of any franchise would be available if there was no negotiated settlement between them and the owners.

Roy, who also has a close association with Bollywood, said that he would also consider talking to superstar Amitabh Bachchan and his family for promoting his team, which he acquired on Sunday in an aggressive bid against Videocon, Adani and others.

"No human can deny the element of glamour.. so glamour should be added to these kind of activities... it definitely helps," he said on ownership of teams by cine stars Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Shilpa Shetty.

Asserting that he would certainly talk to Bollywood stars for promotion of the team, Roy said that he would also broach the issue with Amitabh Bachchan, who the Sahara group chief is believed to have bailed out in reviving the Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited a few years ago.

"Why not... I have not talked to them yet (Bachchan family)... I will talk to him (Amitabh)," he said.

On his rather delayed decision to join the Indian Premier League, Roy said that today the event is the biggest eye-ball catcher than any other event. "The TRP of even India Australia match is lower than IPL matches."

Explaining his decision not to participate in the first round of bidding for IPL, he said: "We are the team sponsors of BCCI and so emotionally I felt why put our logo on the club level chest... It was an emotional decision.

"Now, the situation is completely different... our decision (now) is a good combination of emotion and materialism... there is a business (angle) to it."

Roy said that having won a team, he would now want to make the best of the situation to make a success out of it.

"Right in the first year it will give operational profits," he said, although admitting that during the first year even the topmost bid of over USD 100 million by the Ambani, was considered very high.

"Now we have have bid more than 3-4 times and we consider there is value to it. In the long run, it will be very, very beneficial," he said, adding that though advantage would go to the first mover, the group would consider all the commercial aspects.

Pak to US: Terror bill worth $35 billion, nuke deal

WASHINGTON: Pakistan is coming up with a bill of $ 35 billion for its efforts in the war on terror and a wish-list that includes a nuclear deal similar to the US-India agreement as it prepares to engage Washington this coming week in what officials from both sides say is the most comprehensive dialogue in their bilateral history.

Turning the US mantra that Pakistan should "do more" in the war on terror, Pakistani officials, in an aggressive turnaround, have said Pakistan has done enough and it is now the United States turn to do more, as they set off to Washington for talks on the heels of what they claim is unprecedented success against the Taliban.

Pakistan has "captured" nearly half the top Taliban leadership, including the organisation's No.2 Mullah Baradar, in recent weeks in the run-up to the talks. Although U.N and Afghan officials accuse the Pakistanis, who were hosting the Taliban leadership, took them in to sabotage peace talks being held outside Islamabad's patronage, U.S officials said on Friday that they were "gratified" by the arrests.

"We are extremely gratified... he is where he belongs," the Obama administration's Af-Pak envoy Richard Holbrooke said about Baradar's arrest by Pakistan as he previewed the upcoming talks with reporters at the State Department on Friday, adding, "And many other people have been picked up or eliminated, and this is putting much more pressure on the Taliban. And this is a good thing for the simplest of reasons: It is good for the military efforts that are underway in Afghanistan."

Holbrooke also endorsed a central role for the Pakistani military at the talks, asking "how can you have a strategic dialogue without including the military?" In a move that has caused some disquiet in Pakistan itself, the country's army chief Pervez Ashfaq Kiyani and spy chief Ahmed Shuja Pasha are members of the delegation, ostensibly led by Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Kiyani is said to have set the agenda for the talks in preparatory meetings in Pakistan.

"If we have a strategic dialogue in our country, we're going to include the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff or some other representative. So we are very pleased that General Kayani is part of this delegation. We think that it's one country, one government, one team. It was their decision and we welcomed it," Holbrooke said. Washington in recent weeks has noticeably cooled down its criticism of the over-arching role played by the Pakistan military in the country's affairs.

Pakistan's wish-list for the Obama administration includes not only speeding up disbursements in bilateral aid under the Kerry-Lugar package and Coalition Support Funds, both of which are audited for more precise use and claim, but enhanced support for its economy, particularly in the energy sector. Vast swathes of the country are now under 8 to 12 hour power cuts and Islamabad is presenting this as one reason why Washington should offer a civilian nuclear deal to Pakistan similar to the US-India deal, although experts say Pakistan has no capacity to absorb or implement such an agreement even if it were to pass international scrutiny.

US officials remain non-committal about the deal. "We have a very broad and complex agenda in these talks... and we're going to listen carefully to whatever the Pakistanis say," Holbrooke said cautiously when asked about a possible nuclear deal. In fact, no one in Washington takes Pakistan $ 35 billion claim as its total cost in the war on terror arrived at during internal deliberations in Islamabad last week, seriously.

But Holbrooke held out the prospect of enhanced aid in other areas and sectors, promising a few surprise announcements. "This is not a photo op, although you will have an opportunity to take a photo. This is an intense, serious dialogue bilaterally between the US. and Pakistan," he said in a hurried briefing at the state department that followed a White House meeting of principals where, Holbrooke said, -- "almost every senior person in the United States foreign policy community was in the room" to discuss US policy for the region.

Pakistan too is striving to broad-base its ties with the US on the same lines as India's expansive engagement, covering sector beyond security. Indicative of the broad agenda for the March 24 talks, the Pakistani delegation led by Foreign Miniser Qureshi includes Minister of Defense Mukhtar Ahmad, Finance Minister nominee Abdul Shaikh, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Social Issues Wazir Ali; Advisor to the Prime Minister on Agriculture and Water Majidullah; the Chief of Staff of the Army General Kayani and his delegation of military advisors; Ambassador Hussain Haqqani; Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir; and Secretaries of Information Technology, Water and Power, Finance, Agriculture, Defense, among others.

The US delegation, led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton includes Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mullen, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Deputy Secretary of State Jack Lew, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Neal Wolin, National Security Council Senior Director David Lipton, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Marantis, the Administrator of USAID Raj Shah, myself, Ambassador Anne Patterson and Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Judith McHale, Under Secretary of Defense Michele Flournoy and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense David Sydney, among others.

All is not well within BJP: Shatrughan Sinha

PATNA: BJP Lok Sabha member Shatrughan Sinha on Saturday said things were not well within the BJP as senior party leaders like Yashwant Sinha, C P Thakur and Shehnawaz Hussain had been ignored in the new team constituted by the party chief N Gadkari.

"All is not not well within the BJP as senior leaders like Yashwant Sinha, C P Thakur and Shehnawaz Hussain have been ignored in the new team," actor-turned-politician Sinha told reporters here.

Sinha suggested that the BJP chief should have a fresh look on the new team and make amendment accordingly.

"I have already expressed my concern about it during my meeting with Sushma Swaraj, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, in New Delhi," Sinha, Lok Sabha member from Patna Saheb said.

He further said all the seniors leaders of the party be consulted in the fresh exercise of constitution of the Gadkari's team.

Modi likely to skip appearance before SIT on Sunday

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is likely to skip appearance on Sunday before the Special Investigation Team probing a post-Godhra riots case, sources in the state government said on Saturday.

SIT had summoned Modi to remain present before him on Sunday in connection with the complaint of Jakia Jaffery, wife of slain former MP Eshan Jaffery, in the Gulburg society riot case.

The SIT has not received any communication from the chief minister till this evening. "There is no response from Modi as yet”, said SIT chief R K Raghavan.

The Supreme Court had on April 27 last year asked the SIT to inquire into Zakia's complaint where she alleged Modi and 62 others, including his cabinet colleagues, police officials and senior bureaucrats aided and abetted the riots which left over 1,000 people dead.

The former MP was killed along with 69 others by a mob at Gulburg society in February 2002. Zakia approached the apex court after the Gujarat High Court refused on November 3, 2007 to give any direction and asked her to seek redressal before the magistrate's court.

The wife of the slain Congress leader had alleged that between February and May 2002 there was a ‘deliberate and intentional failure’ of the state government to protect the life and property of innocents. Zakia said on Saturday that when everybody is waiting for the questioning of Modi, he should appear before the probe panel.

Congress general secretary and state in-charge P Sudhakar Reddy said "Modi, when elected back to power in 2007, had said that he was not a chief minister but a common man. He should depose before SIT when a summons is issued in his name and prove that he is a common man".

SIT had to face legal hurdles while probing Zakia's complaint when in July last year former BJP MLA Kalu Malivad (one of the 63 people named in the complaint) approached the Gujarat High Court seeking a stay on investigations by SIT with regard to Zakia Jaffery.

The High Court had dismissed the petition saying as SIT is directly working under the supervision of the Supreme Court no relief can be granted in this matter. Malivad then approached the apex court challenging the High Court verdict.

In connection with Zakia's complaint, SIT has already recorded statements of a number of persons named in her complaint which include former minister of state for Home Gordhan Zadafia, BJP leader I K Jadeja, former BJP MLA from Lunawada Kalu Malivad and sitting MLA from Mehsana Anil Patel, former IPS officer R B Sreekumar, social activist Teesta Setalvad, IG Shivanand Jha, some other senior police officers and political leaders.

Babbar Khalsa module busted, planned a bomb blast in Delhi

New Delhi/Mohali:Police busted a module of Sikh militant group Babbar Khalsa International, which was planning to trigger bomb blast in the national capital and Himachal Pradesh, by arresting three members of the group.

While Purushotam Singh alias Bunty, Daljit Singh and Talvinder Singh were arrested by Mohali police on Friday night, two others, including Harinder Singh who is wanted in the 2007 blast at a theatre in Ludhiana, managed to escape.

A reward of Rs 5 lakh has been announced by the police on information leading to the arrest of Harinder who had returned to India last month after fleeing to Pakistan after the Ludhiana blast.

Sources said Harinder had shifted his base to Greece from where he had come to India to carry out the blast in the national capital and Naina Devi in Himachal Pradesh.

Police also announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh on Nirmal Singh who too had managed to escape. Police seized a pistol, some ammunition and cash totalling to about Rs one lakh from the three arrested.

While Talvinder is a resident of Delhi Purushotama and Daljit are from Punjab. A case under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act besides Bomb and Explosives Act has been registered against the three at Zirakpur police station.

Sources said the Babbar Khalsa international module were receiving instructions from top BKI terrorists Paramjit Singh and Purushotam Goldy based abroad. They were also being helped by Pakistan-based Wadhwa Singh and Parminder Singh, sources said.

Anti-Sikh riots: Court declines Sajjan plea, to face trial

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Saturday declined to take on record an application of former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar seeking certain documents related to the chargesheet filed against him in 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases, saying it was aimed at causing hindrance in the progress of the case.

It sent the case for trial before a Special CBI Court against Kumar and others.

"I am not impressed with the arguments and contentions of the accused. It seems that the application has been filed to cause further hindrance in committing the case to the Sessions court," Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Lokesh Kumar Sharma said.

"Under the garb of application the accused is trying to set up his defence by placing his documents and records," he said.

Kumar had sought certain documents and statement of witnesses recorded by the investigating agency during the probe into the matter.

"So far as withholding of records is concerned, it is for the prosecuting agencies to suffer consequences. The application filed by the accused is not directed to be taken on record," the Court said.

Senior advocate I U Khan, appearing for Kumar, submitted that the CBI has failed to supply the documents, necessary for the just decision of the court. He had a tough time convincing the court with regard to the contents of the documents running into over 100 pages.

"I have gone through the contents of the application and perused the documents. The bunch is so bulky, it is humanly impossible to examine the same within a short span of time," the ACMM said.

During the proceedings, CBI's special prosecutor Y K Saxena submitted that out of the statements of some witnesses, there were some that were filed only through letters.

"It is submitted by Khan that filing the application was within the rights and scope of the CrPC. The court feels that it is not so desirable in the interest of justice," the ACMM said.

"We cannot bypass the proceedings. I am not bound to take everything on record," the judge said. The court dismissed Khan's plea that his application be taken on record so that the accused can move the Sessions court challenging its rejection.

Meanwhile, the court directed all the accused to appear before a Special CBI court on March 27 while referring the file to the District judge for further proceedings. The Delhi High Court had on February 26 granted bail to Kumar citing delay in the deposition of witnesses against him in the cases.

The former Delhi MP along with Girdhari Lal, Balwan Khokhar, Mahender Yadav, Maha Singh, Capt Bhagmal, Santosh Rani and Krishna Khokhar were named as accused in the murder of five persons in Delhi Cantt area during the 1984 riots.

CBI had filed two chargesheets on January 13 in the riots cases registered on the recommendation of Justice G T Nanavati commission which had inquired into the sequence of events leading to the riots in the aftermath of the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Google’s exit from china: A turning point

An exit from China's search market could mark a setback not only for Google Inc's global business strategy but for a stock that has long been synonymous with virtually limitless growth opportunities.

After nearly six years of tantalizing Wall Street with its unbridled potential, Google is for the first time threatening to close off a key avenue of future growth if it shuts down its operations in China, the world's largest Web market by users.

For the investors that have long celebrated Google's status as one of the tech industry's leading growth stocks, the situation in China is cause for some re-evaluation.

"It hurts the multiple people are willing to pay for Google if they don't have the China opportunity," said Aaron Kessler, an analyst at Kaufman Brothers.

Since Google said in mid-January that it intends to stop censoring search results in China, the stock has fallen roughly 6.3 percent, closing at $560.0 on Friday and wiping away about $11.6 billion in market capitalization. During the same period, the Nasdaq has gained 3.4 per cent.

The Google sell-off occurred even as Wall Street's near-term financial expectations for the Internet company have improved. During the past two months, the average analyst estimate for Google's revenue and earnings per share next year have risen 3.1 percent and 2.3 per cent respectively, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine.

Google dominates the search market in the United States and most other countries in the world, but it is a distant second in China, where local powerhouse Baidu Inc (BIDU.O) is the top dog. Since Google's announcement that it could pull out of China, Baidu's shares have surged 44.5 per cent.

Baidu trades at 41 times forecast 2011 earnings, whereas Google trades at just under 18 times next year's earnings.

China already has more Internet users than any country and will become the world's largest online ad market at some point, said RBC Capital Markets analyst Ross Sandler.

"So walking away from that upside is a real problem if you're Google and if you're a Google shareholder," Sandler said.

To what extent Google walks away from China is still unclear.

Google has been negotiating with the Chinese government about operating an uncensored search engine in the country, but few expect it to succeed. A report in the China Business News this week said that Google could make an announcement about its future in the country on Monday.

Many analysts believe that Google will seek alternative ways to play in the Chinese search market even if, as seems increasingly likely, the company opts to pull the plug on Google.cn, its censored Chinese-language search site.

It is possible that Google could create a new Chinese-language search site based outside of mainland China and the government's strict regulations about acceptable content. As it is, Web surfers can already get localized search results for various countries, translated into different languages including Chinese, directly on the flagship Google.com site.

Of course, only the tech savvy in China can access sites based outside of the country and its Web filtering firewall. And it's unclear to what extent Chinese advertisers would be able to access the self-service ad system that Google offers.

"Obviously the opportunity is smaller without Google.cn, but it's not zero," said Pacific Crest Securities analyst Steve Weinstein.

Google's Android smartphone operating system is also likely to play a large role in the company's future in China.

While Google gives Android away to cell phone manufacturers for free, the software provides a way for Google to reach consumers directly and to potentially offer ads and other money-making services that aren't as politicized as search.

Google's current business in China accounts for a tiny slice of the company's $24 billion in annual revenue. Analyst estimates of Google's annual revenue in China range from $300 million to roughly $600 million.

While the situation in China is a setback to Google's long term business goals, some analysts say the company has enough other opportunities to retain its status as a growth stock.

"I don't know that anybody ever bought Google's stock because of their exposure to China. People bought Google because of their exposure to global search, the fact that they are the leader in almost every market," Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney said.

Rajasthan Royals beat KKR by 34 runs, register first IPL win

Ahmedabad:Rajasthan Royals dished out an all-round performance to defeat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 34 runs and register their first win in the third edition of the Indian Premier League here on Saturday
Battered and bruised in the last three matches, Rajasthan Royals were in desperate need of a win and Shane Warne's men didn't disappoint as they first posted a competitive target of 169 and then restricted Kolkata Knight Riders to 134 for five at the Sardar Patel stadium at Motera here.

Chasing 169 to win, KKR started rather slowly as they scored at nearly six runs per over and once they lost opener Manoj Tiwary in the third over bowled by Yusuf Pathan things further slowed down.

Cheteshwar Pujara and opener Brad Hodge tried to keep the scoreboard ticking and put up a brilliant 50-run partnership for the second wicket before the former's innings was cut shot by Siddharth Trivedi.

Pujara's inside edge off Trivedi hit the middle stump as the Knight Riders were reduced to 68 for two in the 11th over. Skipper Sourav Ganguly then joined Hodge and they added 27 runs before Hodge was bowled by Pathan in the 15th over.

With the required run-rate rising every moment, Ganguly and newman Owais Shah threw there bat at everything but without much success as the match slipped through their fingers.

In pursuit of runs, Ganguly perished in deep mid-wicket, caught by Adam Voges in the last over off Munaf Patel. Anjelo Mathews coming at number six also ran himself out in the last over, while Shah was left unbeaten at 19.

Earlier, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala top scored with a 36-ball 45 to guide Rajasthan Royal to a modest 168 for seven after skipper Warne won the toss and decided to bat.

Rajasthan found themselves in a spot of bother when they lost their opener Michael Lumb in the first ball but Naman Ojha (27), Faiz Fazal (31 off 23), Jhunjhunwala and Adam Voges (37 off 22) fired in unison to lift Rajasthan bowlers to a competitive total.

Lumb flopped for the second consecutive match when he was caught plumb in front of the wicket in very first delivery of the innings by Ashok Dinda. But other opener Ojha and Fazal steadied the ship with a 42-run first wicket partnership.

Ojha blasted five boundaries in his 18-ball innings, while Fazal cracked six fours before being caught by Cheteshwar Pujara off Shane Bond. Ojha's innings came to disappointing end as he was run by a combined effort from Bond and Murali Kartik.

Yusuf Pathan (15 off 14) failed to make any significant impact as he was caught by Brad Hodge off Dinda after just managing two hits to the fence. For Knight Riders, Dinda, Ishant Sharma and Bond picked up two wickets each.

Symonds guide Deccan to 6 runs win over Kings XI

Cuttack: Irfan Pathan's blitzkrieg went in vain as Andrew Symonds produced an all-round display to guide Deccan Chargers to a thrilling six run victory over Kings XI Punjab in an Indian Premier League match here today.
Symonds first scored a spakling 38-ball 53 and then followed it up with the crucial wicket of Mahela Jayawardene (14 off 9) and two important catches off Ravi Bopara (38 off 32) and Irfan Pathan to restrict Kings XI's to 164 for eight.

For Kings XI, Pathan played a gem of an innings with a blistering 60 off just 26 balls to singlehandedly bring the Punjab side inches closer towards the target from nowehere.

Apart from Pathan, Bopara and Jayawardene, only one Kings XI batsmen -- S Sreesanth (12 off 5) managed double figures.

Vaas (2/27) was the pick of the bowlers for Deccan, while Symonds (1/22), RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha and Sharma all accounted for a victim each.

Earlier sent into bat, Symonds notched up back-to-back half centuries in the event while skipper Adam Gilchrist made a quick-fire 12-ball 33 to help Deccan post 170 for seven on the board.

With this victory, Deccan has returned to the top half of the points table with two wins out of three matches, while Kings XI have slumped to their third consecutive defeat in the Twenty20 tournament.

It was a dismal start to Kings XI's run chase as they lost two wickets, including that of their skipper Sangakkara inside the third over.

Last match half centurion Manvinder Bisla was run out for a duck as T Suman came up with a direct hit. Four balls later Vaas castled Sangakkara's timbers with a beautiful off-cutter.

As if that was not enough, Yuvraj Singh's (4) poor show with the bat continued as he ballooned a Vaas delivery to give a simple catch to Gibbs at cover point.

Symonds then sent packing a dangerous-looking Jayawardene and after Bopara's dismissal, victory was just a formality for the Hyderabad side.

But Pathan ensured that it was not an easy win for the Hyderabad side as he used his long handle to great effect and hit three fours and five sixes to take Kings XI very close to the elusive win.

However, it was not to be as needing 19 runs off the last over, Pathan fell to Jaskaran Singh, caught in the deep by Symonds.

Sreesanth came up with three boundaries in the last over but it was not enough to take Kings XI to their first victory in IPL III.

Earlier apart from Gilchrist and Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs made a run-a-ball 23, while T Suman (26 off 22) and Chaminda Vaas (16 off 10) provided the necessary impetus towards the end to take Deccan to the competitive score.

Yuvraj Singh (2/21) was pick of the Kings XI bowlers while Irfan Pathan, Shalabh Srivastava and Bipul Sharma all picked up a wicket each.

Gilchrist was at his destructive best from the onset. He greeted Sreesanth with two fours and two sixes to pile up 24 runs of the second over.

Mayawati rally: FIR lodged in 'bee attack' case

LUCKNOW: After UP Chief Minister Mayawati saw a conspiracy in bees invading the stage when she was holding forth at her party rally here on Monday, an FIR has been lodged by police to probe who lit the fire that disturbed the beehive and what was the intention.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajiv Krishna, who is probing into the bee invasion incident, said that prima facie it had been revealed that the bees swarmed Ramabai Ambedkar rally ground during Mayawati's address after being disturbed by smoke.

"Initially, a case under Sections 435 (lighting fire to cause damage) and 285 (causing disturbance in any public place) has been lodged at Ashiyana police station," Krishna told reporters.

The DIG said that it was a serious incident as in case of a bee attack it could have led to a stampede in which a number of people could have been killed.

Likewise, if something would have happened to people on stage then also it could have led to stampede and death, he said.

He said that the opinion of experts in bee behaviour had also been taken.

The police are further investigating into the incident as to who lit the fire and what was the objective behind, he added.

After the incident, the BSP alleged that appearance of the bees at the rally ground was a conspiracy following which the state government ordered an inquiry.

A preliminary inquiry has indicated that some persons intentionally lit fire to disturb a beehive at nearby Ambedkar University in a bid to disturb the rally, official sources said.

"According to experts, the bees that swarmed the rally ground were bigger ones, normally found in forest areas," they said.

Addressing a meeting of party leaders, MPs and MLAs yesterday, Mayawati alleged that "in a bid to create stampede; under a conspiracy a beehive near the rally ground was disturbed due to which a swarm of bees came towards the stage."

Pak judge backtracks on 'Hindu terror' remark

ISLAMABAD: The Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif has contradicted the observation that the Hindu community was involved in funding terrorism in Pakistan, clarifying that observation was misreported and wrongly attributed to him.

A handout issued by the Lahore HC registrar on Wednesday said that it is noted with great concern at the observation made by the Chief Justice while hearing a constitutional petition on extradition of alleged foreign terrorists has been misreported and misconstrued in certain sections of press.

"Finding it malicious, and irresponsible it is strongly contradicted that the observation went to attribute financial support in terrorism to Hindus", the press release said.

The Lahore HC Chief Justice said, "It is clarified that no such observation has ever been made. This court shows sympathy for those who felt hurt at this misleading report, and expresses its belief in the rights granted by our constitutions to minorities".

The minority members of national assembly protested and staged a token walkout from parliament on Tuesday regarding a reported statement by Lahore High Court Chief Justice (CJ) Khawaja Muhammad Sharif that the Hindu community was financing terrorism in Pakistan. The members of the Awami National Party, a ruling coalition partner also joined the Hindu MPs.

The protest was the second raised in the house over press reports in as many days after the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was criticized over his appeal to Taliban in a speech to a seminar in Lahore on Sunday to spare his province terror attacks because of some shared views with his PML-N party.

The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Hindu member Romesh Lal, who raised the issue, said sentiments of an estimated four million Pakistani Hindus had been injured by the LHC chief justice’s remarks, as reported in a section of the press, that while terrorist bomb blasts were being carried out by Muslims, "money used for this came from Hindus".

The member said if a country was suspected of sponsoring such attacks it should be named, but blame should not be put on just Hindus who, he said, were as good patriots as other Pakistanis.

He appealed to Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to take suo motu notice of Justice Sharif’s remarks. The PPP chief whip and Labour and Manpower Minister Khurshid Ahmed Shah told the house that justice Khwaja Sharif seemed to be blaming India for financing the Taliban rather Hindus. Shah said that he was sure a clarification into the matter would come by tomorrow.

US intelligence chief meets Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: America's top intelligence official Dennis C Blair met union Home Minister P Chidambaram here on Thursday, on a day suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba operative David Headley was slated to appear before a Chicago court to plead guilty to charges of terrorism.

Blair was accompanied by the US ambassador in New Delhi Timothy J Roemer and a delegation of the US Secret Service. It was not known if Headley figured in the talks with Chidambaram.

The two sides are said to have discussed issues related to terrorism emanating from Pakistan and also the recent spate of terror attacks in Afghanistan targeting Indians.

The ambassador told reporters after the meeting in North Block that the US would cooperate with the government of India in all areas, including terrorism.

The visit was to maintain "the day by day, hour by hour cooperation with the government of India and the United States on issues of terrorism... and fighting a common enemy", the ambassador said.

The US intelligence head also held a meeting with Intelligence Bureau Director Rajiv Mathur on the issue of terrorism and the ways to counter it, a home ministry official said.

Blair's visit comes days after his statement that Pakistan was using militant groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba as strategic tools against India.

LeT's operative Headley, a Pakistani American resident of Chicago, has been named in the Mumbai terror attack and is expected to plead guilty to get a sentence lighter than the death penalty.

He faces six counts of conspiracy involving bombing of public places in India, murdering and maiming people in India and abroad and providing logistical support to the Lashkar-e-Taiba. He also faces six counts of aiding and abetting the murder of six citizens in India.

India rules out surgical strike on terror camps in Pak

New Delhi: India on Thursday ruled out the possibility of any surgical strike on terror camps inside Pakistan, but asserted that adequate measures would be taken to ensure its interests are protected.
"No, no," Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju, said when asked about the possibility of surgical strikes on terror camps inside the neighbouring country.

He told reporters here, "We will take adequate measures to see to it that our nation is safe, our citizens are safe, and our interests are safeguarded."

While expressing hope that Pakistan will act against terror camps operating from its soil, he said India will also ensure that its interests are protected and the nation is secure.

"The first responsibility is towards ensuring adequate security towards which we are leaving no stone unturned. Beyond that whatever information we have about these camps, we have brought it to the notice of our neighbour and we hope they will take action on that," he said on the sidelines of a seminar at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses here.

"It is a stated policy that they (Pakistan) will do infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir. Across the borders, we are taking adequate safety measures and we are continuing to talk to that government. I am sure there will be results at the end of the day," he said.

Defence Minister A K Antony had yesterday said there were 42 terror camps inside Pakistan and that the neighbour had not done enough yet to dismantle the terror infrastructure.

On the gaps in the Army's anti-tank missile systems, Raju said the Defence Ministry would provide whatever capability the Services needed within the time frame that they sought.

"The entire endeavour of the Ministry is to supply the capability that the Services want within the time frame that they seek," he said.

Asked if the Defence Ministry would do away with the system of 'Sahayaks (batman)' for Army officers as strongly recommended by a Parliamentary committee, Raju said it was for the concerned Service to examine it, just like the Air Force and the Navy have acted on it.

"It is for the Army to look into it and see what is appropriate," he added.

S&P upgrades India's ratings to 'stable'

New Delhi: Credit rating agency Standard & Poor's has said it might not downgrade India's sovereign credit rating further, after the government announced plans to reduce the gap between income and expenditure.

Currently, India's long term credit rating is at the bottom of the investment grade -- 'BBB-minus'.

The agency, at the same time, revised the ratings outlook to "stable" from "negative," indicating potential positive changes to the country's credit fundamentals.

Sovereign rating is a tool to measure the risk level of a country's investing environment and shows investors the ability of a country to repay its debts, foreign or domestic.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, in the Budget for 2010-11, said that the government will reduce its borrowing in the new fiscal and also pegged fiscal deficit to come down to 5.5 per cent of the GDP next fiscal.

Fiscal deficit is estimated at 6.7 per cent this fiscal. "We revised the outlook on the Republic of India to stable from negative," S&P said in a statement from Singapore, while pegging India's economic growth rate at eight per cent for next fiscal. This is in line with the government's own projection.

In February last year, the rating agency had cut the outlook on India's credit rating from stable to negative, as the country's fiscal deficit widened after the government provided stimulus to perk up the economy in the wake of the global financial meltdown.

In the Budget 2010-11 last month, the government partially rolled back the stimulus and restored customs duty on crude and raised excise duty on petrol and diesel.

The country's short term rating is placed at A-3, which is lower medium grade.

Food inflation eases to 4-month low

New Delhi: Cheaper vegetables and pulses pulled down food inflation to a four-month low of 16.30 per cent in the first week of March, but there are expectations that RBI may tighten money supply to prevent inflation from spreading to manufactured goods.
Food inflation came down by 1.51 percentage points from 17.81 per cent in the week before March 6, on account of decline in prices of vegetables, especially onions and potatoes, as per the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) of primary products.

Prices of onions fell 11.08 per cent in the wholesale market over the previous week and that of potatoes by 3.5 per cent. Overall vegetables prices during the same period dropped by 10.51 per cent, while pulses became cheaper by 3.85 per cent.

Food inflation had last touched a below-16 per cent level for the week ending November 15, 2009, when it had dropped to 15.58 per cent.

"Food prices are coming down. Sugar prices have come down due to higher production estimates in major producing states like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh," Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Pawar said.

Although food inflation is falling, Crisil's Principal Economist DK Joshi said the Reserve Bank of India may still raise key policy rates to rein in the general inflation that was at 9.89 per cent in February and likley to cross 10 per cent mark in March.

"I see overall inflation in March over 10 per cent. RBI in its April review is likely to raise key policy rates by 25 basis points," Joshi said.

Earlier, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee too had said that he would not be surprised if overall inflation reaches double digits this month.

RBI in its annual credit policy to be announced on April 20, will try to address the twin objectives of protecting growth and contain rising prices.

Though food prices are falling on a weekly basis, they are still high for most commodities except onion when compared to the corresponding period last year.

On annual basis fuel prices rose by 12.68 per cent, mainly on account of the increase in duties in the budget.

Following the duty increase prices of petrol and diesel went up over Rs 2.50 a litre.

Milk was costlier by 15.31 per cent when compared with prices prevailing during the corresponding week in 2009.

Ambanis’ manager to become Pak FM

Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani may soon appoint former PML-Q leader, and one-time Musharraf loyalist Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat as the country's finance minister.

According to talks doing the rounds in Pakistan, Hayat is expected to take oath within the next 48 hours, as he has already had separate talks both Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari.

But what is most noticeable is that Hayat is managing a massive hedge fund in Dubai of over one billion dollars which is apparently owned by India’s Ambanis.

The hedge fund is called New Silk Route Partners (NRS) and is 1.4 billion US dollars fund owned by the Ambanis with some local partners in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Hayat had served as the Privatisation Minister in Musharraf's regime, during which he was involved in the infamous privatisation deal of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL).

The big question is how would Hayat look after Pakistan’s already sluggish finance when he could not even safeguard the national interest in one multi-billion dollar deal, The Daily Times said.

'My diving technique has gone haywire'

New Delhi: India's explosive batsman Yuvraj Singh has blamed his injury breakdowns of the past few months on his diving technique while fielding, saying it seems to have gone ‘haywire’.

"It's just unfortunate that I've got these injuries in the last 4 months. Hopefully, you know, next coming...we've got a very important year for the Indian team, and should not be getting injured this year, fingers crossed," said Yuvraj, who is currently recuperating from a wrist injury.

"It's just been happening in the last year only. I don't know, I think my technique of diving has gone a bit haywire or something," he added.

The swashbuckling left-hander, who plays for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League, said the breakdowns have left him frustrated and he can't wait to get back on the field.

Mayawati sacks Karnataka BSP spokesman over garland row

LUCKNOW: Brushing aside the opposition outcry, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today displayed brazen defiance against today by getting herself garlanded with currency notes valued at Rs.18 lakh.

As a fall-out of the controversy, Karnataka BSP spokesman Y N Sharma, who on Monday disclosed that it was a garland of currency notes, was on Wednesday sacked from the post. He said he was being made a "scapegoat".

Even as the controversy triggered by the garland of Rs.1,000 notes worn by her on Monday raged across the political spectrum, Mayawati appeared at a meeting of her party leaders here and put up a defiant show.

Parliament was rocked by the issue on Monday and Tuesday with BSP's opponents disrupting proceedings and demanding action against Mayawati. The Income Tax department also said it would probe the issue.

Today's display was also attacked by political parties including Congress, BJP and SP leaders who described it as a blot on democracy and a brazen display of love for money.

The latest garland comprising notes of various denominations carried by five men was put around her neck at a meeting of party leaders two days after she was felicitated with 1000-rupee notes estimated between Rs 21 lakh and Rs 15 crore at a massive BSP rally here.

"We want to tell our opponents through the media that it is a matter of happiness that workers from 18 zones of the party brought collections in one rupee notes which has been strung around. The garland is worth Rs.18 lakh.

"We also want to announce that, Mayawati permitting, that wherever she goes, she will henceforth be greeted with garland of notes and garland of flowers," PWD minister and the Muslim face of BSP Naseemuddin Siddiqui announced at the meeting to a thunderous applause of the gathering of partymen.

Don't expect miracles from India-Pakistan dialogue: Antony

PANAJI: Defence Minister A.K Antony on Wednesday said Pakistan "was not taking serious steps" to destroy 42 terror camps on its soil. Stating that India was "exploring all possibilities", Antony also said he did not expect any "miracles" from the dialogue with Pakistan.

"All the terror camps in Pakistan are active. Pakistan has not taken any serious steps to destroy these camps," Antony told a press conference on the sidelines of the launch of Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) offshore patrol vessel (OPV) Vishwast at the port town of Vasco, 30 km from here.

Antony said India was one of the important targets for terrorist groups and that there were 42 terror training camps in Pakistan which were aimed at creating violence in the country. Reiterating that Pakistan had not taken serious steps to control the terror apparatus directed at New Delhi, Antony said that despite this, India would continue to talk to Pakistan.

"However, I do not expect any miracles," Antony said. The foreign secretaries of the two countries had held talks last month, in the first structured dialogue since 26/11. Pakistan has in the past routinely denied allegations that it arms, funds and trains anti-India terrorists.

Speaking on the issue of infiltration by militants from Pakistan into India, the defence minister attributed it to Jammu and Kashmir's fast-paced return to normalcy.

"Kashmir is becoming normal. Violence is less. This situation cannot be tolerated by forces inimical to India," he said, adding that since "normalcy was coming to Kashmir fast, infiltration was increasing". He said the Jammu and Kashmir Police had now become "efficient and committed".

Earlier, ICGS Vishwast was commissioned by Antony in the presence of the director general ICG, Anil Chopra, and Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.

The 90-meter long ship is a state of the art vessel with infra red surveillance system, which enables it to detect targets at night and is designed to carry one helicopter and five high-speed boats for search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, exclusive economic zone surveillance and marine pollution response missions.

Any lenience to Headley a matter of concern: India

New Delhi: Concerned over reports that Mumbai terror suspect David Headley may enter into a plea bargain with prosecutors in Chicago, Indian security establishment feels that it would lend credence to suspicions that he may have been working for the Americans.

Indian officials, who have been watching the progress in the case at Chicago in US, is somewhat worried about reports emanating from there today that Pakistani-American Headley would be pleading guilty in an attempt to get lighter sentence.

Headley, who has been charged with hatching conspiracy in the 2008 Mumbai attacks by the FBI, has sought plea bargain under American laws, a senior government official said.

The laws there provide for agreement between federal prosecutors and individuals under criminal investigation which permit them to give the government information about crimes with some assurances that they will be protected against prosecution.

The official said any lenient sentence now will ‘confirm’ that Headley, who was arrested on October three last for his links with Lashker-e-Taiba, was an American agent.

A lenient sentence is a matter of concern for India and may give credence to the suspicion that he was an American agent, the official said, adding if the sentence was something like 100 years, then there was no problem.

India has been trying to get access to 49-year-old Headley, who has been charged with conducting recee of installations attacked by Lashker terrorists in 26/11 in Mumbai.

Headley had earlier pleaded not guilty to the 12-count superseding indictment filed against him on January 14 but now moved for a "change of plea" which will be heard by US District Judge Harry Leinenweber tomorrow.

The American terror suspect had got away with a lesser sentence after he was arrested in 1998 for smuggling heroin into the US from Pakistan as he cooperated with the investigation in the case.

He was sentenced to less than two years in prison and thereafter went to Pakistan to conduct undercover surveillance operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

CBSE set to go global from next session

After deciding to make Class X board exam optional, India's premier school board CBSE is set to go global by introducing a new syllabus for international students and would affiliate any school from any country from the next academic session.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) would introduce a new syllabus to make it on par with international boards like International Baccalaureate (IB).

The new syllabus will be only meant for international students and will be taught in the interested affiliated schools from abroad.

"From next session, the CBSE will introduce a separate curriculum for international students. This will help the board to become an international board like IB," a HRD Ministry official said.

However, CBSE will continue its existing curriculum for domestic students.

The new curriculum will be of international standards and give a global perspective to the subjects of study.

Citing an example, the official said while the subject of history in the existing syllabus mainly deals with Indian history, the new syllabus will focus on world history. Similarly, the syllabus of all subjects would be made keeping in view the curriculum of international boards.

The CBSE would introduce the new syllabus in Class I and Class IX in the next session. Then every year, the new syllabus would be introduced in a new class.

"Over a few years, CBSE will have international standard syllabus for all classes," he said.

The board at present has affiliated schools in a number of Gulf countries and Singapore. However, such schools are mainly started by the Indian diaspora there.

The new curriculum will help even other schools in any country to opt for the CBSE system and get affiliated to it.

"CBSE, in the process, will be an alternative to any international school boards," the official said.

This will help the students of those schools better compete at international level. It will be easier for them to study any where in the world.

The new curriculum will give more importance to activity-based teaching. More project works and practical experiences will be the thrust, the official said.

CBSE has set up a committee which is working on the new syllabus. The syllabus will be ready within a month.

Pak, Iran sign pipeline deal sans India

Islamabad: Pakistan has signed a deal with Iran paving the way for the construction of a much-delayed pipeline pumping Iranian natural gas to the energy-starved South Asian country, officials said on Wednesday.

The $7.6 billion project is crucial for Pakistan to avert a growing energy crisis already causing severe electricity shortages in the country of about 170 million.

Pakistani Petroleum and Natural Resources Minister Naveed Qmar hailed the signing of the deal in Turkey on Tuesday as an historic achievement.

It's a milestone towards meeting energy needs of the country, a Pakistani government statement quoted Qamar as saying.

The pipeline will connect Iran's South Fars gas field with Pakistan's southern Baluchistan and Sindh provinces.

Iran has the world's second-largest gas reserves after Russia. But sanctions by the West, political turmoil and construction delays have slowed its development as an exporter.

Under the deal, 750 million cubic feet of gas will be pumped to Pakistan daily from Iran by mid-2015.

Qamar said he hoped work on the project would be started soon so that gas supplies to Pakistan could start on time.

PEACE PIPELINE

Dubbed the peace pipeline, the project has been planned since the 1990s and originally would have extended from Pakistan to its old rival, India.

However, India has been reluctant to join the project given its long-running distrust of Pakistan, with which it has fought three wars since they achieved independence in 1947.

Under the deal signed on Tuesday, Pakistan is allowed to charge a transit fee if the proposed pipeline is eventually extended to India.

The United States has tried to discourage India and Pakistan from any deal with Iran because of Tehran's suspected ambitions to build nuclear weapons. Iran denies any such ambitions.

India has invested in civilian nuclear reactors to help fulfill its increasing energy demand. It also signed a landmark civilian nuclear deal with the United States in 2008.

Pakistan has long called for a similar deal from the United States but Washington has been unwilling to make an agreement with its ally, which is battling an al Qaeda-linked Islamist insurgency.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari reiterated Pakistan's demand in talks with Director of U.S. National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair on Tuesday.

(Zardari) called upon the U.S. to assist Pakistan in civilian nuclear technology to help the country overcome (the) energy crisis, on the one hand, and bridge the trust deficit between the two countries on the other, a government statement said.

Kolkata: Chennai Super Kings' charismatic captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be out of action for 10 days because of an elbow injury and, in his absence, left-hander Suresh Raina will lead the side in the ongoing Indian Premier League.
Dhoni was hit by a rising Shane Bond delivery in yesterday's match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, after which he looked in pain and needed medical attention.

Consequentially, Dhoni will miss Chennai Super Kings' matches against Delhi Daredevils (March 19), Kings XI Punjab (March 21), Royal Challengers Bangalore (March 23) and Mumbai Indians (March 25).

Team owner Gurunath Meyappan and director (cricket operation) V B Chandrasekhar said in a statement that Dhoni would return home and in his absence, Parthiv Patel would keep the wickets.

"Dhoni is going back to Ranchi today and will join the squad in Chennai on March 21 (ahead of their home match against Kings XI Punjab). Thankfully there is no fracture it's just a bad bruise," they said.

Indian boxers make a clean sweep at C'wealth C'ship

World number one Vijender Singh (75kg) fought through a bleeding nose to clinch his first international gold medal in two years as Indian pugilists made a clean sweep in the finals to win the overall team title at the fifth Commonwealth Boxing Championships here on Wednesday.

With Asian champion Suranjoy Singh (52kg), South Asian Games gold medallist Amandeep Singh (49kg), Asian silver medallist Jai Bhagwan (60kg) and Paramjeet Samota (+91kg) also triumphing in the finals, it turned out to be an all-win day for the hosts in front of a houseful crowd.

The gold rush started early for the Indians when Olympian Dinesh Kumar (81kg) got a walkover against Scot Callum Johnson, who was declared medically unfit due to a right wrist injury this morning.

In the last bout of the day, Olympic and World

Championship bronze medallist Vijender thrashed England's Frank Buglioni 13-3 despite a bloodied nose.

"I was scared that the bout may be stopped and I would be declared medically unfit. Bleeding was just not stopping. I was constantly looking at the judges to see what they might do," said the 24-year-old Haryana boxer, who was adjudged the best boxer of the tournament.

"A gold medal after two years (the last being at the Chemistry Cup in Germany in 2008) is obviously very satisfying," added the strapping six-footer, who started the year with a silver in an invitational tourney in China in January.

Sharp and swift with his movement, Vijender out-witted his rival, who repeatedly tried to hit him on the injured nose. Scoring mostly through straight right punches and left hooks, the Indian was 3-1 up in the opening round and despite being tentative after injuring his nose, Vijender remained ruthless enough to land some telling jabs on his opponent.

Buglioni ran out of steam in the final three minutes and Vijender even dared him with an open guard after taking complete control of the bout.

"Vijender is very quick on his feet and that helped him remain in control. As far as the bleeding goes, I would say, god protected him today because the blood was just not stopping despite applying ice," said national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu.

Earlier, the day started perfectly for the Indians when Samota eked out a hard-fought 7-3 triumph over New Zealand's Joseph Parker.

Samota trailed 0-1 in the opening round but came back strongly with a flurry of straight punches to unsettle his rival. The two boxers were tied 3-3 in the second round but the Indian nosed ahead in the final round as Parker began to tire out.

"I tried to settle down in the first round and though I was trailing, I was confident of coming back and the massive crowd support also helped me. He began to look tired after the second round and that's when I attacked him the most," said Samota, for whom it was a career-best performance.

Next man in was Amandeep and though he faced an aggressive opponent in Kenya's Peter Mungai, the Punjab boxer kept his cool to notch up a 3-0 triumph.

"It wasn't as tough as I expected and I am happy about that. I got just three points but then my rival didn't get any," quipped the 23-year-old.

For Suranjoy, it was literally a stroll in the park as he out-classed his Mauritian rival Oliver Lavigi in just 25 seconds to get the gold medal. The diminutive Manipuri was up 1-0 but didn't know which punch of his left his opponent in no condition to fight.

"I just hit three punches and no clue which one of them got him," said the Asian Championship and President's Cup gold medallist.

In contrast, Jai had to toil hard and the Haryana-lad even ended up with a cut below his right eye after the 6-2 win over Bahamian Valention Knowles.

Knowles was the first to score in the most edge-of-the-seat contest of the day and it was only in the second round that Jai began taking control with a slender 3-2 lead.

The Indian went all out in the final round, forcing

Knowles on the defensive.

"It was difficult to control punches as my rival was moving so much in the ring. But my fitness levels helped me," he said.

Jai dedicated his triumph to good friend and his room-partner Vijender for supporting him in his hour of crisis.

"Vijender supported me through an injury crisis in 2008 and motivated me to continue. So, this win is for him," Jai said.

While India clinched the team title, defending champion England finished runners-up. India had previously won the team title in 2005 with four gold and three silver medals in Glasgow. In 2007, Indians had fetched a gold, two silver and three bronze medals to finish runners-up in Liverpool.

This time, the hosts had picked a 10-member team for the competition.

Of them, Akhil Kumar (56kg), Balwinder Beniwal (64kg), Dilbagh Singh (69kg) and Manpreet Singh (91kg) had crashed out by the quarterfinal stage.
