Upset DMK mulls supporting Cong from outside

New Delhi:After being involved in days of negotiations over the allotment of ministerial berths in the next UPA Govt, Congress-DMK talks broke down in New Delhi on Thursday.

DMK’s senior leader TR Balu came out of the Cong ‘war room’ after day long negotiations with top Cong leaders and announced to the waiting media that DMK has decided to offer support to the Cong from outside. According to sources, Cong' refusal to hand over the crucial Telecom and infrastructure related portfolios to the DMK was the stumbling block.

Earlier, stuck by 'berth' pangs, the Congress was grappling with other allies like Trinamool Congress who were doing hard negotiations to get plum portfolios as Manmohan Singh gets ready to be sworn in on Friday for a second consecutive term as Prime Minister.

On a day of conflicting reports, the DMK with 18 MPs, the third largest constituent in the UPA coalition, was said to be demanding three Cabinet portfolios, two Ministers of State with independent charge and two at the Ministers of State level.

However, among the 'big four' portfolios Finance is likely to go to Pranab Mukherjee, while Home and Defence would be retained by P Chidambaram and A K Antony. There is no finality about who will bag External Affairs for which names of Kamal Nath and Kapil Sibal are doing the rounds.

DMK chief Karunanidhi's son M K Azhagiri, his grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran and T R Baalu are among the Cabinet probable from the party while his daughter Kanimozhi is among the likely candidates for the MOS slot.

Will join cabinet only if I get Railways: Mamata to Cong

New Delhi:Trinamool Congress party sources said that party Chief Mamata Banerjee may join the government at the centre if her party gets Railways even as TC is locked in hard negotiations with the Congress over ministerial berths.

Accompanied by senior party leaders Dinesh Trivedi and Mukul Roy, Banerjee visited the Congress 'War Room', where negotiations are being held with the UPA allies on the portfolio distribution.

They remained closeted with Congress leaders A K Antony and Ahmed Patel for almost an hour. "There is no talk of bargaining (for ministerial posts). ... We have not discussed this. What they (Congress) want, they will do. Even if they don't give us anything, we don't mind," Banerjee told reporters after her meeting.

This was the third round of negotiations Banerjee had with top Congress leaders on the matter but she has been publicly maintaining that Trinamool Congress had no demands.

However, sources said the party is keen on Railways, Coal and Mines and Steel portfolios which, it feels, are critical to West Bengal economy. It was also eyeing the portfolios of Health and Home Affairs at the Minister of State level.

Both Trivedi and Roy, who accompanied her to the Congress office, are the front-runners for Cabinet positions from the Trinamool Congress. The party is understood to be expecting at least two berths in Union Cabinet and three Ministers of State.

The Trinamool supremo said she wanted her party's relations with Congress to "remain good. .... More important than ministerial positions is to have stable government."

DMK to offer outside support to UPA govt

NEW DELHI: Congress-DMK talks on the issue of Cabinet berths have broken down. Unhappy with Congress formula on distribution of Cabinet berths,DMK has decided not to join the UPA government and will only support it from outside.

"The Congress formula is not acceptable to us", DMK leader T R Baalu told reporters after talks between the two sides, PTI reported.

Baalu announced the breakdown of talks after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called up DMK chief M Karunanidhi who conveyed his rejection of the Congress proposal.

DMK had been demanding seven ministerial berths, including three Cabinet, while Congress was ready to concede only six berths.

The DMK executive council will meet in Chennai on Friday to discuss future course of action. Baalu said there was no formula for government formation in 2004.

On a day of conflicting reports, the DMK with 18 MPs, the third largest constituent in the UPA coalition, was said to be demanding key ministerial berths, which the Congress was reluctant to accept.

DMK chief Karunanidhi's son M K Azhagiri, his grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran and party leader T R Baalu were among those for whom Cabinet berths were being demanded and the chief’s daughter Kanimozhi was among the likely candidates for the minister of state slot.

Reports said the Congress was keen to give two Cabinet berths, four MOS slots including two with independent charge. Mediators were trying to work out the final modalities of an agreement.

Premji takes pay cut, but hike for others in Wipro top brass

NEW YORK:
As the global economic downturn takes toll on pay packets, Indian IT major Wipro's chief Azim Premji seems to be leading by example as he has taken a cut of about 10% in his annual compensation.

The total remuneration paid to Premji dipped by $32,414 (about Rs 14 lakh) in the fiscal year 2008-09 to $2,96,142 (about Rs 1.37 crore).

India's third largest IT exporter, listed at New York Stock Exchange, had paid a total remuneration of $3,28,556 to its Chairman in the previous fiscal.

However, the company has paid higher remuneration to many of its other executive directors and senior management personnel in 2008-09, according to its annual report filing with the US market regulator SEC. The compensation paid to the non-executive directors also increased.

For its non-employee directors, Wipro said, the attendance fee was raised to Rs 20,000 per meeting with effect from August 1, 2008, from Rs 10,000 previously. Besides, the company paid a total of Rs 1.46 crore as commission to them in 2008-09, up from about Rs 86.02 lakh in the previous year.

The pay package for executive directors like Suresh Senapaty, Pratik Kumar, Suresh Vaswani and Girish S Paranjape also rose in 2008-09.

Wipro drops Satyam from rival list

New York:Scam-hit Satyam seems to be losing its status as a noteworthy rival for the top Indian IT firms, as Wipro has become the second major player in this space after Infosys to drop its name from the list of competitors.

Satyam used to be a regular in the list of competitors mentioned by its larger peers like Infosys and Wipro in their annual report filings with the US market regulator Securities and Exchange Commission.

However, Satyam's name is conspicuously absent in Wipro's latest annual report filing for the financial year ended March 31, 2009. Prior to this, Infosys also dropped Satyam's name from its list of noteworthy rivals in its latest annual report filing, filed with SEC earlier this month.

All the three Indian IT firms, Infosys, Wipro and Satyam are listed in the US -- Infosys on Nasdaq and the rest two on the New York Stock Exchange.

Before it was hit by the country's biggest-ever fraud admitted to by its founder and then chairman Ramalinga Raju in January, Satyam was known as the fourth-biggest software exporter from the country after TCS, Infosys and Wipro.

Satyam Computer has already embarked upon a revival path after its government-appointed board finalised a deal to sell controlling stake of 51 per cent in the company to domestic conglomerate Mahindra Group.

Satyam is said to have retained a large number of its clients, although some of them have reportedly cancelled or not renewed their contracts with the Indian IT firm.

In its latest annual report filing with SEC, Wipro has said that "the market for IT services is highly competitive and rapidly changing. Our competitors in this market include consulting firms, big four accounting firms, global IT services companies, such as Accenture, IBM Global Services and India based IT services companies such as Cognizant, Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services."

Economic crisis: India better placed than US

New Delhi:The US may have a few economic lessons to learn from India, with the emerging economy being better rated than the world's largest economy in terms of their capabilities to tackle the raging financial turmoil.

India has been ranked at the 13th position among 57 countries by Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development (IMD) for being better equipped to tide over the crisis and emerge more competitive in near term.

The rankings based on 'Stress Test' also takes into account the future scenario along with individual nations' readiness and resilience in a period of global recession.

Denmark has clocked the top position, followed by Singapore, Qatar, Norway and Hong Kong. The US is placed far below at the 28th spot.

Moreover, at the 13th place, India is ahead of neighboring China (18th rank) and the world's second-largest economy, Japan (26).

"The Stress Test shows that smaller nations, which are export-oriented, resilient and with stable socio-political environments are better equipped to benefit immediately from the recovery," IMD World Competitiveness Center Director Professor Stephane Garelli said.

Going by the rankings, India is better placed than Brazil (22), the UK (34), Russia (51).

Delhi Daredevils beat Mumbai Indians by 4 wickets

NEW DELHI: Delhi Daredevils beat Mumbai Indians by 4 wickets to win the 55th match of the second edition of the Indian Premier League at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Thursday.

Delhi chased down the victory target of 166 runs with 2.3 overs to spare as captain Virender Sehwag was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Blogs: Do Bollywood stars jinx IPL teams? | Is IPL2 hurting India's World Cup chance?

Delhi were on the rampage till Harbhajan Singh almost turned the match on his head and was on a hat-trick twice in the match.

Delhi opener Gautam Gambhir hit 7 fours in his 38-ball 47 before he was dismissed by Lasith Malinga.

It was then that Harbhajan wreked havoc in the Delhi camp. He first dismissed Tillakaratne Dilshan (24) by a 'doosra' and on the very next delivery Delhi captain Virender Sehwag missed the fast off-break that knocked back the off-stump.

Dilshan hit 2 fours and 2 sixes in his 14-ball 24, while Sehwag reached his 4th IPL 50 off 26 balls with the help of 2 sixes and 5 fours.

Harbhajan then dismissed AB de Villiers (6) and Rajat Bhatia (2) off consecutive deliveries in his fourth over till Amit Mishra hit a four and a six off Jean Paul Duminy to seal the match for Delhi.

Harbhajan finished with match figures of 4/17.

Delhi Daredevils were 93/1 in 10 overs.

Delhi lost David Warner when he miscued a hit high up in the air for Mohammad Ashraful to take a well-judged catch at mid-off. Warner hit a six and a four in his 15-run knock that came off 9 balls.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians scored 165/8 in 20 overs.

Sent in to bat, Mumbai got off to a poor start losing opener Sanath Jayasuriya on the first legal delivery of the match. After bowling two wides outside the off-stump, Dirk Nannes got a delivery to come back and trapped Jayasuriya plumb in front of the wicket.

Nannes struck again in his next over having Jean Paul Duminy (9) caught behind by Dinesh Karthik.

Pradeep Sangwan then struck in his first over when Mohammad Ashraful (2) edged an outswinger to keeper Karthik.

Captain Sachin Tendulkar hit 8 fours in his 41-ball 46 before he was clean bowled by Rajat Bhatia. The 73-run partnership between Tendulkar and Ajinkya Rahane revived the Mumbai innings.

Rahane hit 2 sixes and 5 fours in his 56-run knock that came off 41 balls before he was caught in the covers by AB de Villiers off Sangwan.

Mumbai have brought in Mohammad Ashraful for Dwayne Bravo, Rahil Shaikh for Chetanya Nanda and Pinal Shah for Yogesh Takawale. Delhi have replaced Ashish Nehra, Farveez Maharoof, Daniel Vettori and Andrew McDonald with Pradeep Sangwan, David Warner, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Dirk Nannes.

Manmohan Singh appointed PM, swearing in on May 22

NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil has appointed Manmohan Singh prime minister for a second consecutive term, after the UPA coalition staked its claim to form the govt.

The new ministry will be sworn in on May 22.

Apparently in view of the comfortable numbers the coalition has in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the president has not asked the prime minister to prove his strength in the house, PTI reported.

"I have pleasure to appoint you the prime minister and request you to advise me on the names of the others to be appointed to the council of ministers.

"I propose to administer the oath of office and secrecy to you on Friday, 22nd May 2009 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan at a mutually convenient time," President Pratibha Patil said in her letter handed over to Singh when he called on her along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Reading out the president's letter, Singh said "you will come to know in due course of time" when asked whether MPs outside the pre-poll allies would included in the new ministry.

Manmohan Singh said the coalition has 274 members including four independents who are part of the Congress-led pre-poll alliance.

"We have the support of SP, BSP and RJD whose number adds up to another 48. All this adds up to 322," he said.

Asked about details of composition of the ministry, Singh said "we will talk in greater detail later."

Earlier in the day, the crucial UPA meet to decide Cabinet berths was held at 10 Janpath, the residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. All the key pre-poll partners of the Congress attended the meeting. ( Watch )

National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee, DMK chief M Karunanidhi, NCP president Sharad Pawar and leader Praful Patel were present, along with senior Congress leaders, including Pranab Mukherjee, P Chidambaram and A K Antony besides Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi was re-elected UPA chairperson during the meeting. Her name was proposed by Karunanidhi and seconded by Mamata, the Trinamool Congress informed mediapersons.

All eyes are now on the likely candidates who would head some of the most important ministries in the next Congress-led UPA government. The ministry of human resource development, headed by controversial Congress leader Arjun Singh could throw up a surprise. According to sources, a serious contender for the ministry is Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi. Kapil Sibal’s name is also doing the rounds, according to TV channel Times Now.

While numbers are no longer a big hurdle for the Congress-led alliance and the process appears to be a formality, working out the terms of power-sharing may create complications. Congress leadership got a reminder on Tuesday when the DMK leadership came up with big `wish list' for portfolios.

There is also the fear that the muscle-flexing may encourage similar demands from Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee. The Congress had initially estimated that the maverick partner may not insist on big portfolios because she would not like her colleagues to grow in stature. They are not so sure any more. The fear is that the arm twisting may incite the Trinamool leader to up her ante as she would not like to be seen as playing in a league below that of the DMK.

Congress may have a task on its hand if the Sharad Pawar demands that the representation of his contingent from the NCP should not be scaled down to be brought in line with the new numbers. Besides expectations of a suitable portfolio for Pawar, Congress will also have to manage demands for his associates like Praful Patel.

YSR sworn-in as Andhra CM, emerges as a mass leader

Hyderabad:Powering the Congress to a spectacular win in the assembly and Lok Sabha elections Andhra Pradesh, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, who was sworn in on Wednesday as the Chief Minister for a second consecutive term, has emerged as an unassuming, crafty leader.

Overcoming a united opposition and anti-incumbency factor, YSR as he is popularly known, has romped home with ease winning for Congress 33 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats and bagging 156 seats in the 294-member AP assembly.

The only Congress chief minister of Andhra Pradesh to complete a full five-year term and also retain it, Reddy, 59, took charge of the state in 2004 at a difficult time for the party which had been out of power in the state for ten years.

It was a tough challenge for Reddy, the son of a mason in Kadapa district, but he has always thrived in difficult times.

After graduating in medicine and practising for a while, Reddy, groomed by a family deeply involved ion public service, began his political career with Congress in mid-1970s.

Having recognised his leadership qualities, the then Prime Minister and AICC president Indira Gandhi made him the chief of Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee way back in 1982.

But Reddy quit Congress following a split and joined Reddy Congress in revolt against Indira Gandhi. After the Reddy Congress was disbanded, he returned to the parent party and went on to become the PCC president again in 1997 when Telugu Desam Party was going strong and his erstwhile party colleague N Chandrababu Naidu was calling the shots in the state.

DMK demands 7 cabinet berths; meeting with Pranab inconclusive

New Delhi:Congress and DMK on Wednesday discussed allocation of portfolios amid reports that the latter is staking claim to seven Cabinet berths. Senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee and DMK chief M Karunanidhi held deliberations for about 45 minutes, trying to work out representation of DMK in the new government.

The discussions remained inconclusive as Mukherjee apparently wanted to consult party President Sonia Gandhi on the issue. "We discussed the mechanism for participation in the government. We shared our views with each other as this is the first meeting. Further discussions are required," Mukherjee told reporters after the meeting. Mukherjee was accompanied by Ghulam Nabi Azad, Congress general secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu, and Ahmed Patel, Political Secretary to the Congress president, when he met Karunanidhi at Tamil Nadu Bhavan.

DMK leaders, including T R Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran, were also present during the meeting along with Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi. DMK, which has won 18 seats on its own and brought a total of 28 seats from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in alliance with Congress, is said to be staking claim to seven berths in the new government, the same number it had in the outgoing ministry.

Karunanidhi's son Azhagiri, Maran, Kanimozhi and A Raja are said to be in the reckoning for cabinet berths while new entrant T K S Elangovan could be given a Minister of State slot.

Helen Davidson, who won Kanyakumari seat for the first time for DMK, is also being seen as a possible candidate for a Minister of State seat. DMK's share this time is two more than in the dissolved Lok Sabha. Karunanidhi met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday soon after his arrival here.

Mumbai attack: India gives more evidence to Pakistan

NEW DELHI: Responding to Pakistan's queries, India on Wednesday handed over to it the third dossier of evidence on Mumbai attacks, which includes certified DNA report and statement of the lone arrested terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab.

The voluminous documentation, comprising replies to 10 queries made by Pakistan and 15 booklets, were handed over by a senior official of the ministry of external affairs when he called a senior diplomat of the Pakistan high commission to the ministry here.

"MEA today handed over to the Pakistani high commission additional information and details related to the Mumbai terror attack sought by Pakistan," a statement by the ministry said.

The documents handed over to Pakistan included the certified report of Kasab's DNA report, sources said.

India had given DNA reports of the 10 terrorists involved in the attack to Pakistan on March 13. However, two DNA reports were of the same person and the report of Kasab was missing due to a clerical error.

The fresh dossier handed over to Pakistan also included a certified statement of Kasab made before a Mumbai court, which was being persistently sought by Islamabad to pursue its own investigations into the case.

Statements of witnesses made in the court and other documents related to it were also included in the 15 booklets which ran into 1500 pages. Such documents could not be handed over earlier because of legal issues, as the permission of the court was required.

The third dossier, given two months after the last one, is a comprehensive set of evidence to enable Pakistan to carry forward the probe, sources said, hoping that Islamabad would pursue the case to take it to its logical end.

India had on March 13 handed over to Pakistan a 401-page dossier, containing question-by-question replies and annexures.

The second dossier included telephone conversations of the 10 attackers and their Pakistan-based handlers intercepted during the 60-hour carnage, fingerprints, DNA profiles and other details of the terrorists who struck in Mumbai.

The dossier also included forensic analysis of GPS, ammunition and other equipment used by the terrorists.

Yahoo, Google, MS still hiring in India

New York:Global majors like Microsoft, Yahoo! and Google may have decided to trim their workforce worldwide to cope with the economic turmoil, but these entities do have openings in India.

Interestingly, the companies are cutting jobs in India too, even as they have hiring plans in the country.

For instance, software giant Microsoft recently said it would create employment opportunities in tune with the growth of the Indian economy.

The announcement came from its Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer amid the firm proceeding with 5,000 job cuts worldwide, including 55 employees in India. The workforce reduction in the country would be completed in the next 18 months.

Few months ago, search engine giant Google unveiled plans of trimming as many as 200 jobs in sales and marketing operations worldwide. Nonetheless, the firm is hiring for about 20 positions in engineering operations, finance and software engineering, among others.

Google hints at partnership with Twitter: Report
Internet entity Yahoo! too would be slashing its employee strength as part of its efforts to bring down costs. At the same time, the company has over 100 vacancies in India, according to its website.

Steve Ballmer noted that Microsoft would continue to hire and create employment opportunities in line with the recovery and growth of the Indian economy.

"We had said that we would lay off about 5,000 people. We are still filling other jobs. We are mostly through that process globally and there is still some work to do.

"... There are areas where we are continuing to add people. As I said, these are global additions, so it is a little hard to separate our work globally from our work in India," he said.

Google hints at partnership with Twitter: Report

London:Internet search engine major Google may be looking at a partnership with micro-blogging site Twitter, says a media report.

‘The Telegraph’ quoting Google's Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt has reported that a partnership of Google with Twitter could be on the cards.

Schmidt hinted that a "partnership with Twitter could be close, although he dampened speculation that he is planning to buy the micro-blogging phenomenon," the daily said in a report published online.

Attributing to Schmidt, the report noted that the Internet giant "can work" with Twitter without having to buy the social network site, hinting that Twitter feeds could be indexed on Google.

The daily said Schmidt had held conversations with the Twitter founders about a strategic partnership. He was also quoted as saying, "We do not have to buy everyone to work with them".

Twitter offers micro-blogging, which allows users to send short text messages, among others, on various multimedia platforms.

According to the publication, Google is rumoured to be interested in acquiring the micro-blogging site Twitter because of its valuable real-time search engine.

Hewlett Packard to slash over 6,400 jobs

New York:Technology major Hewlett-Packard, which has posted a steep decline in second quarter profits, will be cutting more than 6,400 jobs or about two per cent of its global workforce in the coming months.

The company, which has a strong presence in India, has reported a 17 per cent fall in profits at USD 1.7 billion for the three months ended April 30, 2009.

In a conference call to discuss the second quarter performance on Tuesday, the firm said it would eliminate about "two per cent of the HP workforce, as we further streamline and simplify our organisation and our supply chains".

"These actions will be implemented over the next 12 months after consultation with employee representatives, where required," HP said.

According to the company website, it has about 3,21,000 employees worldwide and a reduction of two per cent would amount to more than 6,400 job losses.

Prabhakaran's body found: Lanka army chief

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan troops recovered the body of slain rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran on Tuesday, a day after he was killed in the Tamil last stand against government forces in the north, the military said.

The government had announced Prabhakaran's killing on Monday, but later said they had not yet found his body. A rebel official abroad denied Prabhakaran was killed and said he was in a safe place.

As speculation grew about Prabhakaran's fate, army chief Gen. Sarath Fonseka announced that his body had been recovered.

"A few hours ago, the body of terrorist leader Prabhakaran, who ruined this country, was found in the battleground," he told state television. "I take responsibility for this statement."

Fonseka's announcement came hours after President Mahinda Rajapaksa delivered a victory address to parliament, declaring that his country had been "liberated" from terrorism after defeating the Tamil Tiger rebels on the battlefield.

Recounting how the rebels, known formally as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, once controlled a wide swath of the north and much of the east, Rajapaksa said that for the first time in 30 years, the country was unified under its elected government.

"We have liberated the whole country from LTTE terrorism," he said, declaring on Wednesday a national holiday to celebrate the armed forces.

The rebels, listed as terrorists by the US and European Union, had been fighting for three decades for a homeland for the mainly Hindu Tamil minority after decades of marginalization at the hands of governments dominated by the mainly Buddhist Sinhalese majority.

Briefly addressing parliament in the Tamil language, Rajapaksa said the war was not waged against the Tamil people.

"Our intention was to save the Tamil people from the cruel grip of the LTTE. We all must now live as equals in this free country," he said.

Rajapaksa has said in the past that he would negotiate some form of power-sharing with the Tamil community following the war and he alluded Tuesday to the need for an agreement.

"We must find a homegrown solution to this conflict. That solution should be acceptable to all the communities," he said. "That solution, which would be based on the philosophy of Buddhism, will be an example to the whole world."

SP, BSP fall over each other in a bid to 'support' UPA

Lucknow:The UPA received unexpected bonus in the shape of support from both Mayawati's BSP and Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party, enabling the coalition to cross the 300-mark in the new Lok Sabha.

The two bitter rivals who fought elections against the Congress in UP and elsewhere have chosen to pledge their support on the ground that they want to strengthen secular forces and to keep the BJP out.

SP has 23 and BSP 20 seats in the 543-member House in which the UPA coalition has secured 261 seats on its own. The total tally will now be 304 without counting parties like 3-member JD(S) and a few independents who were offering their support.

First the BSP supremo announced her party's support at the start of a meeting with her party leaders, saying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed her as a "younger sister" and urged her to adopt a positive attitude towards formation of the UPA Government to strengthen secular forces.

She said the party's National Executive and Parliamentary Board which met this morning took the decision on giving unconditional support to the government from outside.

Mayawati said her party general secretary and confidant Satish Chandra Mishra would handover the letter of BSP's support to President Pratibha Patil.

As news of BSP support came from Lucknow, Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh met the President and handed over a letter of support of the party's 23 MPs to the UPA Government.

SP rescued the Congress-led UPA Government last year after the Left parties withdrew support to it on the nuclear deal issue and parted ways with the Congress before the elections.

Prabhakaran alive, will emerge stronger: SL refugees

Rameswaram/Madurai, May 19: The announcement of the death of LTTE leader V Prabhakaran by the Sri Lankan Army has not created any flutter in the Lankan refugee camps in these two towns, but most inmates dismissed the reports as false.

"Prabhakaran is not dead. He will emerge stronger... nobody can touch even his shadow," Andrews, a refugee at Mandapam camp said, referring to pictures of Prabhakaran's body shown by TV channels.

"Prabhakaran has been fighting for us for more than 30 years, we know his strength, calibre, as well as the strength of the Lankan army," Sivagnanam, a refugee at Dindigul camp felt.

The refugees are also sceptical about returning to Sri Lanka, in spite of the promises held out by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksha.

"Even if unfortunately Prabhakaran had died, another Prabhakaran will emerge. The LTTE was crippled by lack of arms and ammunition. It was not a real war, but a one-sided war," another refugee and a retired policeman, Velmurugan said.

Referring to the Sri lankan president's assurance that Tamils would be given equal rights, refugees at a camp near Tiruvathavur said they did not believe his words.

"We want the Indian government's assurance for our safe return," said S Malini, a graduate from Colombo University. "When we stayed there, the Lankan government failed to protect us. It was LTTE which protected us. We came here because this is the place of our forefathers. Here we are living peacefully, though we get a meagre income," claims Maheswari.

Vijayarani, another refugee, says they will return to Sri Lanka only if there is a separate Eelam. She lost her husband in the battle in the island and came here as a refugee. Her children did not know anything about Jaffna. Though they were eager to see Lanka, they fear the Army, she says.

Meanwhile, security around all the refugee camps has been tightened to prevent any infiltration. Additional armed police guard have been posted in all the camps.

US gives another free pass to Pak nuclear program

WASHINGTON: The United States has again given what virtually amounts to a free pass to Pakistan's India-specific nuclear weapons program, washing its hands off reports by its own military and intelligence that Islamabad is rapidly expanding its arsenal, while insisting it will ensure US aid is not spent on the country's nuclear program.

A phalanx of American officials sprang to the defense of questionable US policy on Pakistan on Monday after reports over the weekend confirmed that Islamabad was accelerating its fissile material production, and the consequent concern in sections of the administration and Congress over whether billions of dollars of US aid would indirectly help underwrite the expanded program.

Most of the batting for Pakistan was done at the State Department, but the Director of the CIA, Leon Panetta, and America's highest ranking general, Admiral Mike Mullen, also stepped up during their day's engagements to certify the security of Pakistan's nuclear weapons and the firewall between US aid and the nuclear program, even as Congress tied up loose ends clear an immediate $ 2 billion aid package this week, the first of many tranches over the next decade.

"I'm not going to address the issue of whether or not the Pakistanis are increasing their nuclear capability," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said on Monday, deferring to Admiral Mullen (who last week confirmed the expansion), while adding, "We're going to work closely with the Government of Pakistan to make sure that the money is spent for the specific purposes that the US Congress had in mind."

As reported in this paper last week, US experts have expressed consternation that Pakistan is being allowed expand its nuclear weapons program "without as much as a reproach."

Pressed to explain why the administration thought the aid would not help the expanding program when money was essentially fungible (exchangeable in the sense of freeing up domestic resources for the nuclear program), Kelly said he wouldn't link the two issues: the idea of providing an assistance package and the fact that Pakistan has a nuclear capability.

"We shouldn't make this connection, because this assistance package is for very specific purposes... I don't see necessarily a connection between the two...We're going to make sure that the package is well spent," Kelly said.

"We take our responsibility as custodians of appropriated funds very seriously. We're going to work closely with the Government of Pakistan to ensure that this money goes to the purposes to which they're intended," he added.

((But the questions about Pakistan's accelerating nuclear weapons program just wouldn't go away at the daily briefing.

Question : So we can – can we just go back to the Pakistan nuclear arsenal? I wasn't sure in your initial answer whether you said that the United States opposes Pakistan increasing the size of...

Kelly : No, I didn't say that. I hope I didn't say that. I simply stated a fact, that Pakistan has a nuclear capability and that we shouldn't draw any links between the issues of our assistance package and their nuclear capability.

Question: Does the United States oppose the idea of Pakistan increasing the size of its nuclear arsenal?

Kelly: I think I referred you back to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on that.

Question: And what you referred us to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on was the question of whether or not it is, in fact, expanding its nuclear arsenal. And the chairman was quite explicit in stating that Pakistan is, in fact, expanding its arsenal. The question that Charlie's asking, which I'm seeking to follow up on, is whether or not the US believes that to be a good thing.

Kelly: I'm not going to comment on that, I'm afraid.

Question: Why not?

Kelly: It's just – I don't think it's my place right now to comment on the issue of whether or not it's a good thing if they expand their nuclear capability.

Question: The Department has been very vocal in stating what things Pakistan must do in order to contribute to stability, which you just identified as a key goal of ours. So what should prevent you from addressing whether or not the expansion of a nuclear arsenal would or would not contribute to stability?

Kelly: I'll just say that we are working very closely with the Government of Pakistan – with the elected Government of Pakistan. We have this joint effort, as I said before, to help them deal with the instability within their borders, and help them deal with the threat of extremism within their borders. But, you know, it's – I'm not going to speculate on their intentions, whether they're increasing it or not increasing. These are intelligence matters and I'm just not going to make a comment on it.))

Elsewhere in the administration, there were similar calls to delink the aid package from Pakistan's nuclear program. Avoiding the fungibility argument, Admiral Mullen told a Washington think-tank on Monday that he was "not aware of any US aid that has gone toward nuclear weapons, save that which is very focused... on improving their security. Which is exactly what we'd like and they've done that."

He was referring to the $ 100 million that the previous Bush administration gave to enhance Pakistan's nuclear weapons security, about which some US officials say they have no idea where and how it was spent.

Nokia to trim another 490 jobs

HELSINKI/NEW DELHI: The world's largest mobile phone maker Nokia will be slashing its global workforce again by another 490 jobs, with as many as 170 positions to go in logistics, production management and production support areas.

Faced with a slump in business due to the global financial turmoil, Nokia
has already announced over 3,500 job cuts this year, as part of cost saving efforts.

Nokia in a statement today said its reorganising efforts would globally affect nearly "170 employees working in logistics, production management and production support.

"The plans do not affect production employees at Nokia's mobile device manufacturing facilities".

Nokia has about 10,000 employees, including nearly 8,000 workers at its manufacturing plant in Chennai.

Meanwhile, the company would be offering Voluntary Resignation Package for 320 employees at its mobile device manufacturing facility in Salo, Finland. In February, Nokia had given the package to 1,000 employees.

"These measures are part of Nokia's previously announced plans to adjust its business operations and cost base in accordance with market demand and safeguard future competitiveness," the statement said.

The latest Voluntary Resignation Package would be available for 320 employees working at the Salo manufacturing facility from June 1 to June 30, 2009.

"The earlier Voluntary Resignation Package we offered to 1,000 Nokia employees in February raised a lot of interest among production employees, who were excluded from this particular global program.

"We now want to offer this opportunity to our production employees in Salo, as we continue to adjust capacity according to market demand," Ville Valtonen, head of Human Resources, Nokia, Finland said.

In March, the Finnish mobile phone maker said it would reduce its workforce by 1,700 employees.

Nokia had earlier announced that it aims to reduce cost by 700 million euros in the coming years.

Vodafone profit up 16.7% on India revenue

LONDON:
Global mobile phone major Vodafone Group Plc on Tuesday reported 16.7 per cent increase in operating profit at 11.8 billion pound for
the year ended March 31, 2009, on higher revenues from emerging markets -- mainly India.

The company's operating profit stood at 10.07 billion pound in the financial year 2008.

Vodafone Group Plc witnessed 15.6 per cent jump in revenues at 41 billion pound for the year ended March 31 against 35.47 billion pound in the FY 2008, a company statement said.

"These results demonstrate the impact of the early actions we took to address the current economic conditions and highlights the benefits of our geographic diversity. The business continues to generate cash strongly and we have made good progress in implementing the strategy announced in November (2008)," Vodafone Group Plc Chief Executive Vittorio Colao said.

In Asia-Pacific and Middle East, the company's revenue increased by 19 per cent on a pro forma basis, reflecting a strong contribution from India where revenue grew by 32.9 per cent on a pro forma basis, the statement added.

"During the financial year 2009, the company added 24.6 million customers in India and ended the year with the highest rate of net additions in the market," it added.

The company's revenues in India stood at 2.68 billion pound, while from the entire Asia-Pacific region revenues were at 5.81 billion pound for the fiscal 2009, the statement said.

"We have continued to drive penetration in India, generating strong revenue growth from our brand and commercial offers and a substantial investment in network coverage, Calao said.

"Indus Towers, our infrastructure joint venture with Bharti and Idea, began operating during the financial year. We expect Indus Towers will enable Vodafone to increase its capital efficiency in India and also to benefit from revenue generated from selling capacity to other operators," he added.

Further, the Group saw 41.7 per cent drop in operating profit at 5.8 billion pound for the year ended March 31, 2009 from 10.04 billion pound in the previous fiscal.

Further, the company is accelerated in its approach on one-billion pound cost reduction programme and expects that over 65 per cent of it would be achieved in the financial year 2010.

" Our one-billion pound cost reduction programme is ahead of plan and we continue to explore further ways to cut cost," Vodafone Group Chief Executive Vittorio Colao added.

However, Vodafone expects that the 2010 financial year would be challenging. In its outlook or FY 2010, the company said it is projecting operating profit in the range of 11- 11.8 billion pound and free cash flow in the range of 6-6.5 billion pound.

In the Asia-Pacific and Middle East, EBITDA increased by 6 per cent on a pro forma basis including India, with a decline in the EBITDA margin as licensing costs increased and network expansion continued, primarily in India,

In Europe, the company organic service revenue decreased by 1.7 per cent. In contrast to Europe, Vodafone said results in Africa and India remained robust driven by continued but lower GDP growth and increasing penetration.

Ponting backs Symonds for an Ashes return

Melbourne:Australia captain Ricky Ponting voiced his support for controversial all-rounder Andrew Symonds' return to the Test side for the Ashes series. Symonds has battled controversies both on and off the field and despite not being among the best of shape, was allowed to play for the country in the one-day series against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi and Dubai recently.

However, the all-rounder seems to be finding his rhythm in the Indian Premier League where he has so far scored 174 runs in five matches for the Deccan Chargers, leading his coach Darren Lehman demanding his inclusion in the Ashes series.

Ponting too backed Lehmann's views and felt it would be a tough job for selectors to keep out the 33-year-old all-rounder when they meet on Wednesday to pick the 16-member squad for the Ashes.

Ponting said he would not be surprised if Symonds gets the nod. "I wouldn't be surprised, he has had his share of battles over the last 12 months, obviously the well documented stuff off the field," Ponting was quoted as saying by 'Australian Associated Press'.

"He's worked his way back into domestic cricket pretty well and played well for us over in Abu Dhabi, Dubai. He's a great guy to have around a team, there is no doubt about that and obviously the selectors are going to have some tough decisions to make in the coming hours I guess," said Ponting, who announced his 'Run Ricky Run' initiative.

The skipper urged fans to donate money as part of the 'Run Ricky Run' programme for every run scored by him in the Ashes.

Bangalore set to chase 135 for remaining in hunt

Johannesburg, May 19: Royal Challengers Bangalore were set to chase 135 runs if they want to remain in hunt for a semis berth this IPL season – II. Batting first after winning the toss, Delhi were led by a fighting knock of Dinesh Karthik as they managed to post a challenging total of 134/7 in twenty overs.

Can Mallya’s boy take the leap into the elites and put behind a horrendous last season? Zeecric.com will keep you updated as the match progresses.

Opening the proceedings Delhi were put on backfoot right at the start against Bangalore Royal Challengers as Virender Sehwag and Mithun Manhas were sent back to pavilion before they could trouble the scorers. Praveen Kumar accounted for both the dismissals.

Gautam Gambhir who opened the innings with Sehwag remained undeterred by the proceeding on the other end and kept the run rate ticking for Delhi. The Delhi left hander along with de Villiers combined together for a 35-run partnership when Jacques Kallis struck.

Trying to clear the third man boundary Gambhir was holed in deep by Ross Taylor on a personal score of 27 as Delhi brought its fifty in 8 overs.

AB de Villiers who has been in tremendous form this season carried the day for Delhi as Karthik joined him at the crease. At the strategy break Delhi managed to lift their total to 63/3.

Bangalore struck just after the strategy break by removing dangerous looking AB de Villiers for 28 runs. Van der Merwe clean bowled his African teammate with a arm bowl which crashed into the off and middle stump.

More problems were in store for Delhi as Kumble then got rid of Andrew McDonald, who failed to read a yorker from the Bangalore’s Jumbo. Match was then a affair between Karthik’s grit and Kumble’s nagging line and length. Kumble marshaled his resources well and in the end by restricting Delhi to 135, his bowlers and fielders did a commendable job.

Congress core group meets to discuss government formation

New Delhi:The Congress core group met on Sunday to discuss the political situation and issues related to government formation following the impressive performance of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the Lok Sabha elections.

The strategic meeting, held at Seven Race Course Road, was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, her political secretary Ahmed Patel and Defence Minister A K Antony amongst others, party sources said.

It was the first high-level meeting in which the top Congress leadership discussed whether to take on board independents or parties of the Fourth Front like Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal to form the government.

The UPA is short of a dozen seats to reach the majority mark of 272 in Parliament.

Another meeting of the Congress Working Committee(CWC) is scheduled to take stock of the situation following the poll results.

The sources said that after the CWC meeting, Congress leadership would hold discussions with the allies to finalise the details of government formation.

Young MPs give Rahul credit for Congress win

New Delhi, May 17: A day after the people's verdict in favour of the Congress, the party's young MPs on Sunday credited its stunning performance to general secretary Rahul Gandhi.

Sachin Pilot, Congress' newly elected MP from Alwar, said: "Congress' good show in the General Elections is because of Rahul Gandhi's efforts."

Pilot, who was in the capital to attend the meeting of the party Sunday, added that it was Rahul Gandhi's hard work that had helped "attract youth voters".

"The Congress party will give a dynamic, stable and functional government under the leadership of Manmohan Singh."

Jitin Prasada, Congress MP from Dhaurahra in Uttar Pradesh, also gave the young Gandhi credit.

"The party's spectacular performance in Uttar Pradesh is because of Rahul Gandhi's work. The people in Uttar Pradesh rejected caste based politics and supported development".

"We are confident of winning the next state Assembly Elections in Uttar Pradesh."

Besides Pilot and Prasada, several youth leaders like Jyotiraditya Scindia, Milind Deora, Deepender Hooda, Ashok Tanwar, Meenakshi Natarajan and Bhanwar Jitendra Singh emerged victorious in these elections.

Rahul’s tea party

Meanwhile, enthused with the people's verdict in favour of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, Rahul Gandhi Sunday invited his party colleagues to a tea party, where they will discuss the results and future strategy.

"Rahul is giving the tea party to meet the leaders from different states to discuss the results and the future strategy of the party," Congress party sources said.

The tea party is taking place at 15 Rakabganj Road, also known as the "war room" of the Congress party office.

'Iron Man' Advani fails to deliver for BJP

New Delhi, May 16, 2009LK Advani, the man who used mobilisation politics to galvanise BJP into a force to reckon with, failed to put the party back in the portals of power - a job A B Vajpayee did in two elections with his liberal image.

The 81-year-old leader's dreams of becoming Prime Minister came crashing down as the Congress-led UPA was all set to form the next government at the Centre.

Although BJP tasted power in 1998 and 1999, Advani had to wait in the wings of Vajpayee and it was only in this election that his party projected him as its PM candidate after the former prime minister stood down from active politics.

A second chance appears unlikely for the BJP's aging 'Iron Man' as during the campaign the saffron party started projecting Narendra Modi as future prime minister, a strategy that is being rued by some leaders in the wake of defeat.

It was Advani who had catapulted the BJP into the national stage with his Hindu nationalist pitch in the 1990s when he emerged as the leader of the Ayodhya movement.

For half-a-decade, Advani played second fiddle to Vajpayee in the party and also as Deputy Prime Minister in the NDA government, but when the time came for him to lead, he failed to find his feet.

In fact, the 'tallest' leader of BJP also had a knack of getting into controversies. His fall from grace with the Sangh Parivar began after NDA lost power in 2004 and more so after his visit to Pakistan in 2005 when he described Pakistan's founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah as a "scular" leader.

Advani was forced to resign as BJP President on December 31, 2005 over his remarks on Jinnah.

A five-time Lok Sabha member, Advani had way back in 1995 projected Vajpayee as the party's prime ministerial candidate, although he had full control of the organisation at that time.

He had then told Vajpayee, as also party officials, that only Vajpayee was best suited for taking the party's cause forward. A year later BJP came to power for the first time but the government lasted for just 13 days.

In 2005, Vajpayee returned Advani's compliment, calling the 'Iron Man' his 'Ram', virtually anointing Advani his successor. This was followed by his projection as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, even though elections were almost a year away.

In the 1990s, Advani ushered in a new form of campaigning by undertaking a series of journeys across the country on a mini-bus that he called 'Rath' (chariot).

His first such journey - the Somnath-Ayodhdya Rath yatra - changed the course of politics of the country as it whipped up Hindu nationalist sentiments, contributing to the fall of V P Singh Government.

Projection of Modi caused immense harm to NDA: Sharad Yadav

New Delhi:After the stunning defeat of NDA in Lok Sabha polls, knives were out with its convener Sharad Yadav holding that Varun Gandhi's "hate statement" and projecting of Narendra Modi as future Prime Ministerial candidate had caused immense harm.

"It may be right or wrong or he (Varun's) might have denied but his statement has caused immense damage. His statement was unconstitutional. It was against the country's unity and must have affected the polls," Yadav told reporters.

Asked whether references that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi could be a future Prime Ministerial candidate had affected the prospects of NDA, Yadav, who is also JD(U) president, said the eruption of the issue in deed had confused the people.

"It was a factor. When the issue had come up, it created confusion among the people's mind. Since the NDA had already declared a Prime Ministerial candidate (L K Advani) unanimously, the issue should have been dismissed immediately," he said. Yadav said such an issue (Prime Ministerial candidate) had come up in JD(U) too during the electioneering, but the party summarily rejected.

Asked whether Gujarat riots too had affected the NDA's prospects, Yadav said such issues do have impact on polls. "As far as Godhra is concerned, we have contested four elections after that. Whatever had happened in Godhra and after Godhra were inhuman. So, such incidents do have affect."

Sonia calls up Lalu, asks him to attend Cabinet meeting

PATNA: In an apparent bid to reach out to her estranged ally, Congress president Sonia Gandhi telephoned railway minister Lalu Prasad and asked him to attend the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Monday.

"UPA chairperson rang up the railway minister last evening and requested him to attend a meeting of the union Cabinet on Monday," his private secretary Bhola Yadav said on Sunday.

He, however, did not divulge what transpired during the telephonic talk between the two leaders coming in the backdrop of severe drubbing of RJD-LJP led Fourth Front had in Bihar.

The railway minister, he said, is scheduled to leave for Delhi later in the day.

Lalu has not been attending cabinet meetings ever since he forged an alliance with LJP and Samajwadi Party.

An apparently contrite Lalu, Congress' largest ally in the outgoing Lok Sabha, had on Saturday admitted that not contesting the elections
in alliance with the Congress was a big mistake.

"The decision to contest elections without the Congress on our side was a big mistake and I acknowledge it. However, it is a matter of great happiness for me that the Congress-led UPA is all set to form its government at the Centre," he had said.

Azam Khan resigns as SP general secretary

NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who was locked in a bitter tussle with the party leadership on the Kalyan Singh issue, on Sunday resigned as the party's general secretary and from its Parliamentary board.

Khan, who was also involved in a feud with party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh on Jaya Prada's candidature from Rampur, took the decision a day after the 47-year-old cine star won the Lok Sabha polls.

Khan's decision came while the SP's Parliamentary board meeting was still in progress.

Party sources said Khan has not been attending any of the board meetings in the last six months.

They said Khan's resignation was expected as the Parliamentary board meeting was to decide about the possible disciplinary action to be taken against Khan, who had been involved in a campaign against Jaya Prada during the run up to the polls.

Khan could not be immediately contacted for his comment.

Willing to be on board UPA government: TMC

Kolkata, May 17: After the electoral drubbing to the ruling Left front in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress Sunday reiterated that it wants early Assembly elections held in the state. It also said it was confident that the Congress would have the party "on board" in the new United Progressive Alliance government.

Trinamool Congress leader Dinesh Trivedi told a news channel that the 26 Lok Sabha seats bagged by the Trinamool-Congress-Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) combine, against the Left Front's poor 15, was a "verdict against the Left".

"The verdict is against the Left and there is low confidence in the West Bengal government. We will see that assembly elections are conducted earliest in Bengal as the people have spoken loudly in the general elections about what they want."

On the Trinamool joining the UPA government, Trivedi said: "We are not really in the game of bargain, we are going to work for the people. We have a significant number - the largest number (19 seats) as far as UPA allies are concerned. I am sure the Congress will be interested to have the Trinamool on board."

He also said that Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee would not fight for any position. "Our main ally has been the Congress. We haven't reached the stage where we are talking about anything. It's between (Congress president) Sonia Gandhi and Mamata. They have a fantastic equation, and will do whatever is good for democracy and for the people."

"You know Mamata, she has never hankered for any kind of position. Our objective is to give stability to this country. (Earlier) even two MPs would bargain to bring instability to the country. We want to give dignity to parliament and dignity to the government," he said.

The Left Front got its lowest tally of 15 since 1977 in the state. West Bengal has 42 Lok Sabha seats. Of the 26 seats, the Trinamool won 19 and the Congress got six.

Left parties meet to discuss poll debacle

New Delhi, May 17: The four Left parties, which received a drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls, met here on Sunday to analyse the results and their future course of action.

The meeting at the CPI(M) headquarters was attended by CPI(M)'s Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury, CPI's AB Bardhan and D Raja, RSP's TJ Chandrachoodan and Forward Bloc's Debabrata Biswas and D Deverajan.

The Left tally was drastically reduced to 24 from the 2004 figure of 61 as it suffered huge setbacks in West Bengal and Kerala.

"We are discussing the reasons of the debacle. We will go through the reasons why we lost. All the parties will also individually need to discuss the issue," Chandrachoodan told reporters before the meeting.

Asked whether aligning with parties like BSP, TDP and JD(S) was a tactical blunder, he said, "I do not think so. Our political line was right."

On whether the Third Front has become irrelevant, he said, "Temporarily it has. But with one defeat, you cannot write it off completely."

He also said meeting of the Third Front allies is unlikely to take place tomorrow.

The top leaders of the four parties, which had supported the UPA government for four and a half years, would deliberate on the reasons for the debacle, particularly in their bastions of West Bengal and Kerala where Congress and Trinamool Congress made significant inroads.

Karat had yesterday said that the Left and its allies will function as an Opposition.

Admitting that the CPI(M) and Left parties have suffered a major setback, he said it necessitated a "serious examination" of the reasons for the party's poor performance.

The CPI(M) Politburo will meet tomorrow to analyse one of the worst ever defeats of the Left in recent times.

Sri Lankan President declares victory in civil war

Sri Lanka's president declared victory in his nation's quarter-century civil war with the Tamil Tigers rebels. But the group's top leaders remained at large, while troops killed at least 70 rebels trying to escape the shrinking northern war zone on Sunday.

A triumph on the battlefield appeared inevitable after government forces captured the last bit of coastline under rebel control on Saturday, surrounding the remaining fighters in a 1.2-square mile (3.1-square kilometer) patch of land.

Thousands of civilians who had been trapped by the fighting poured across the front lines, the military said. "My government, with the total commitment of our armed forces, has in an unprecedented humanitarian operation finally defeated the LTTE militarily," President Mahinda Rajapaksa said referring to the rebels by their formal name, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. "I will be going back to a country that has been totally freed from the barbaric acts of the LTTE," he said in a speech in Jordan that was distributed to the media in Sri Lanka.

The rebels, who once controlled a de facto state across much of the north, have been fighting since 1983 for a separate state for minority Tamils after decades of marginalization by the Sinhalese majority. Responsible for hundreds of suicide attacks _ including the 1991 assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi _ the Tamil Tigers have been branded terrorists by the U.S., E.U. and India and shunned internationally.

The rebels also controlled a conventional army, with artillery units, a significant navy and even a tiny air force. After repeated stalemates on the battlefield, the military broke through the rebel lines last year and forced the insurgents into a broad retreat, capturing their administrative capital at Kilinochchi in January and vowing to retake control over the rest of the country.

The rebels have insisted that if they are defeated in conventional battle, they will return to their guerrilla roots. On Saturday morning, government troops sweeping in from the north and south seized control of the island's entire coastline for the first time in decades, sealing the rebels in a tiny pocket of territory and cutting off the possibility of a sea escape by the rebels' top leaders, the military said.

Government forces have been hunting for reclusive rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and his top deputies for months, but it was unclear if they remained in rebel territory or had already fled overseas.

Even as Rajapaksa declared victory, the military reported that fighting continued to rage in the northeast war zone. Huge explosions could be heard across the battlefield as rebels detonated their ammunition stocks and artillery dumps, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Early Sunday, the insurgents tried to escape from the surrounding troops in six boats across a lagoon. But army troops thwarted the rebel attempt, killing a large number of rebels, said the military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara.

So far, 70 bodies of rebel fighters have been recovered, he said. Reports of the fighting are difficult to verify because the government has barred most journalists and aid workers from the conflict zone.

Some 11,800 civilians escaped the war zone Saturday, joining more than 200,000 others who fled in recent months and are being held in displacement camps, Nanayakkara said. Rights groups say the rebels were holding the civilians as human shields to blunt the government offensive. The rebels denied the accusation.

U.N. spokesman Gordon Weiss said an estimated 20,000 people had emerged from the combat zone in the past few days and were being processed by the government. "We have no access to that process. We hold grave fears for the safety of the estimated 30,000 to 80,000 people who are still inside the combat zone," he said.

The U.N. says 7,000 civilians were killed and 16,700 wounded from Jan. 20 through May 7. Since then, health officials say more than 1,000 civilians have been killed in a week of heavy shelling that rights groups and foreign governments have blamed on Sri Lankan forces.

The government denied firing heavy weapons and brushed off calls for a humanitarian truce.

Each Infy employee worth Rs 97 lakh

NEW DELHI: Each employee at IT bellwether Infosys Technologies is worth as much as Rs 97 lakh, mainly based on the potential value of their
future earnings for the company.

The IT major's total value of human resources, which includes both software professionals and support staff, is pegged at Rs 1,02,133 crore for the fiscal ended March 2009.

According to the company's annual report, the human resources' value of Rs 1,02,133 crore during fiscal 2009 was for 1,04,850 employees during the same period.

On an average, the same translates into a value of about Rs 97 lakh for each employee.

For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2008, the value of human resources stood at Rs 98,821 crore while the total work force of the company stood at 91,187.

In FY 2009 the number of software professionals and support staff stood at 97,349 and 7,501 respectively, the report said.

The value of human resources is evaluated and based on the "present value of future earnings of employees" and few other factors, the company said.

Employee compensation includes all direct and indirect benefits earned both in India and overseas and the incremental earnings based on "group or age" are among the assumptions take into account, it added.

The report noted that the value is computed using the "Lev & Schwartz" model.

Knights manage to lose again & how

Johannesburg, May 16, 2009:The Kolkata Knight Riders contrived to lose a game that was all but won when the last over began. The Deccan Chargers needed 21 from 6 balls, bowled by Mashrafe Mortaza, and Rohit Sharma played a scarcely believable hand.

Utter confusion reigned off the first ball as the square-leg umpire declared a no-ball as insufficient fielders were in the circle. This was hit for four. Just two off the next two balls and the Chargers needed 14 from 4 balls. A full-toss was swung for six over square-leg, the nervous Mortaza bowled a wide and Rohit was looking at 7 from 3. A scampered brace off the fifth ball, a superb extra-cover drive for four and one needed off the last ball. With the field up Mortaza bowled a bouncer and Rohit swung it for six.

The irony was that the Kolkata team had overcome an iffy start to post a strong 160 for 5. Brendon McCullum was trying to hit his way out of disappointment and Sourav Ganguly was equally desperate but unlike the captain, he didn't get out. His repeated and failed attempts to force the issue affected his team's scoring rate and the target would have been a moderate one if not for David Hussey who made a 17-ball 43.

The Chargers, though, had too much firepower, and KKR found a new way to lose a game that had been won.

Super Kings dash Mumbai Indians hopes of semifinal spot

Johannesburg, May 16, 2009:The Mumbai Indians spent on Friday evening on the beach at Port Elizabeth, soaking in the breathtaking view. The fresh seaside air should have helped them get over the disappointment in the wake of the heartbreaking loss at the hands of the Rajasthan Royals.

Unfortunately, it didn’t help much as they went down to the Chennai Super Kings the next day, all but ensuring that their IPL II journey ends short of the semifinals. The Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, is now more or less certain of making it to the semifinals. After their close loss to Bangalore the Chennai team needed to win to spare themselves last moment jitters and calculations. Chasing 148 they didn’t look in control in the first 10 overs as the Mumbai Indians kept them in check. They managed to keep Matthew Hayden shackled and also picked up a couple of wickets. But things changed after the strategic break when Dhoni stepped in and the duo took the team home rather comfortably in the end.

As for Mumbai, they failed to put up as many runs as they would have liked, in the do-or-die match. The move to bring Jayasuriya back to the top worked as the left-hander made a quick-fire 30, but Dwayne Bravo again perished in unfamiliar territory. Duminy needed to bat through the innings and he did that again to perfection. But a cracking innings was missing from the other end.

Kings XI in do-or-die match against Deccan

JOHANNESBURG: Having revived their semifinal hopes with a morale-boosting six-wicket win over table toppers Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab would look to continue their domination over Deccan Chargers in their must-win Indian Premier League match on Sunday.

With 12 points from 12 matches and only one match left after Sunday's clash, they will have to win against Deccan, who have an equal 12 points from 11 outings, if they desire to be in the running for the remaining three semi-final spots after Daredevils had already reserved their place in the last four.

Kings XI had not been a consistent side in this year's IPL having failed to establish a winning momentum but their win against Daredevils on Friday have shown that they can beat any team in the tournament on their day.

They will have the psychological advantage going into the match as they had beaten Adam Gilchrist's men by three wickets in their earlier meeting.

What would have boosted confidence of Kings XI was the return to form of fit-again Australian fast bowler Brett Lee whose man-of-the-match winning 3/15 effort against Delhi kept their semifinal hopes alive.

Lee has added sting to the Kings XI bowling department which also has tough competition within with South African Yusuf Abdulla warming the bench.

ManU wins record equaling 18th league title

London:Manchester United captured their 18th English league title on Saturday when they secured the point they needed in a nervy 0-0 draw at home to Arsenal. It was a cautious display by United, who endured some anxious moments late on before the final whistle sealed a hat-trick of titles and moved them alongside Liverpool as the teams with most English league crowns.

Arsenal, who will finish a distant fourth, enjoyed plenty of possession and came agonisingly close to silencing Old Trafford when captain Cesc Fabregas struck a shot against the outside of Edwin van der Sar's post with seven minutes remaining. United hung on, however, moving to 87 points with one game remaining to end the formidable challenge of Liverpool whose title drought stretches back to 1990. Liverpool, who visit relegation fighters West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, have 80.

"That was the longest 90 minutes in history," said United manager Alex Ferguson, who has won 11 league title in 22 years at the club and is already setting his sights on claiming another one next season. "It will be even more special when we get in front of them (Liverpool). We are a young team and next season we'll go for it again. This is a great side, a great squad, I could have picked two teams today," he told Sky Sports.

Liverpool could finish second with 86 points, the highest total not to win the Premier League, and Ferguson said Rafael Benitez's side had been tough to keep at bay. "They beat us 4-1 at home, which was a travesty of a result, but they got great impetus from that. That gave them the scent and they took the scent and credit to them because they've battled all the way."

Latest election news in Detail

UPA leads in 250 seats, NDA in 157

NEW DELHI: The Congress-led UPA is all set to retain power at the Centre putting up an impressive performance in states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to overwhelm the BJP-led NDA.

The UPA alliance was ahead in 250 constituencies with Congress alone leading in 198 seats. The ruling Front is just short of a little over 20 seats for the magic figure of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha. The NDA was leading in 157 seats with BJP ahead in 119 seats.

The Congress exulted over its victory saying it was a vindication of its policies.

Manmohan Singh will be the first Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power after a full five-year term with the Congress having nominated him as its candidate for the top post, first time it had done in its history.

The Congress performance was spectacular in Kerala where it routed the Left Front and dealt a severe blow to the Marxists in West Bengal with help from ally Trinamool Congress.

It also swept Delhi, did exceedingly well in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and more than doubled its tally in UP leading in 20 of the 80 seats there.

The BJP has conceded defeat and said the party had performed below expectation and the mandate of the people was in favour of the Congress-led UPA alliance. "It has become clear that Congress and the alliance led by it has emerged as the largest coalition...though there was no clear majority," BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley told reporters here.

Putting up a brave face, Jaitley said the BJP honoured the mandate of the people with "due respect".
Commenting on performance of the party, he said "we performed well in some places but we performed below expectation in some other states.

"It is a collective failure," he said but made it clear that there would be no change in party's ideology.
Jaitley said the BJP had run a positive campaign during the electioneering.

The BJP has put up a good showing in Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The party was leading in 18 of the 28 seats in Karnataka, 19 out of the 29 seats in MP and 15 out of 26 in Gujarat.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli), her son Rahul Gandhi (Amethi), External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee(Jangipur), Industry Minister Kamal Nath (Chhindwara), Veerappa Moily (Chikaballapur), Jyotiraditya Scindia (Guna) were among the prominent party candidates leading. Sachin Pilot (Ajmer) has won.

BJP leader L K Advani (Gandhinagar), party president Rajnath Singh (Ghaziabad), Yashwant Sinha (Hazaribagh), Jaswant Singh (Darjeeling), Sushma Swaraj (Vidisha) and Varun Gandhi (Pilibhit) were leading while his mother Maneka Gandhi has lost from Aonla.

Other prominent leaders who were ahead were Sharad Pawar (Madha), Mulayam Singh Yadav in Mainpuri, Lalu Yadav (Pataliputra and Saran), Kalyan Singh (Etah), Ajit Singh (Baghpat), Sharad Yadav (Madhepura) and Mamata Bannerjee (Kolkata South). LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan has lost from Hajipur.

Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi has won from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

Surprisingly, the Congress ally DMK put up a good showing leading in 18 of the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu while AIADMK, which had no member in the outgoing House, was ahead in nine seats.

The Congress was leading in eight seats but its stalwart P Chidambaram lost from Sivaganga. Mani Shankar Aiyar was trailing in Mayiladuthurai.

DMK candidates M K Azhagiri, son of chief minister M Karunanidhi has won from Madurai and Dayanidhi Maran was leadinf Chennai South while Union Minister T R Baalu was trailing in Sriperumbudur. MDMK leader Vaiko was trailing in Sivakasi.

Congress reaffirmed Manmohan Singh will be the Prime Minister now and Rahul Gandhi its future prime minister.

This election Manmohan Singh is our prime ministerial candidate, AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters here.

The prime minister's chair is Rahul Gandhi's future as he is the future leader of the party, Dwivedi said.

He said there were three decisive factors for party's good performance - leadership of the government by the Prime Minister, leadership of UPA by Sonia Gandhi and leadership of campaign by Rahul.

Dwivedi's remarks come at a time when UPA appeared all set to return to power.

BJP in a state of shock, UPA set to storm in

New Delhi:The BJP has finally admitted that the Congress and its allies were way ahead of the NDA, as per verdict 2009.

"We missed the presence of Vajpayee," BJP president Rajnath Singh said.

“There’s something for us to learn and unlearn,” said party spokesperson Balbir Punj, conceding defeat around 11 am. The BJP parliamentary board will now meet in the evening to discuss the debacle.

The early trends of Verdict 2009, suggesting a Congress surge in the southern states, thereby helping it establish a comfortable lead over the BJP, have come as a huge disappointment to the BJP.

A section of party leaders was already convinced that the trend was unlikely to be reversed in the North, even if the BJP, as per projected estimates, was said to be doing well in Uttar Pradesh.

“The BJP may catch up with the Congress, when the results from Northern states start coming in, but it appears that the ruling party has an upper edge in the government formation exercise,” said a senior BJP leader, after initial results. “We had not expected the complete badgering that the Left got in Kerala, thereby, ensuring a very good show by the Congress there,” was the comment of another leader.

Left says it is ready to sit in Opposition

New Delhi:After facing one of the worst defeats at the hustings, the Left parties said on Saturday that they were ready to sit in the Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha and would not support the Congress in government formation.

"Our expectations have not been fulfilled, we admit. ... Congress is in a position to form government. Let it form. We will sit in the opposition," CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan told reporters in New Delhi.

Asked whether the Left would support the Congress in government formation, the veteran communist leader shot back "why should they need our support? They don't need our support. We will sit in opposition and fight for the cause of the poor."

He said the Left parties would meet in New Delhi on Sunday to chalk out the future course of action and the four parties would hold meetings of their own to "review our work".

Asked about their Third Front partners like BSP, AIADMK, BJD and TDP, Bardhan said "we are not abandoning them".

He parried a question on whether the Third Front parties would also join the Left in sitting in the opposition, saying "let us see". The Third Front parties, including the Left, would be meeting here on Monday to take stock of the post-poll situation.

Earlier, senior CPI leader D Raja said the Left parties would also not allow the BJP to take any advantage of emerging situation.

"We are not with Congress party either at the end of the day or at beginning of the day...if the mandate is not for us to form a non-BJP non-Congress government, alright, then we will sit in the opposition," Raja said.

Orissa Assembly polls: Naveen's BJD posts landslide victory

Bhubaneswar:Biju Janata Dal chief Naveen Patnaik's gamble of going alone in the 2009 elections paid rich dividends with the party posting a landslide lead in 100 of the 147 assembly constituencies and 14 of the 21 Lok Sabha seats, far ahead of rivals Congress and BJP.

Naveen who broke the 11-year-long alliance with BJP just before the polls calling it 'communal', was rewarded by the voters handsomely as BJD with its pre-poll allies NCP and Left are expected to win anything between 95 and 100 seats against a simple majority mark of 74 seats. Naveen who is all set to create history by becoming the first Oriya politician to become chief minister for a consecutive third time led his party to a win no one anticipated.

Though JB Patnaik of Congress is the longest serving chief minister of Orissa, he could not score a hat-trick. Even Naveen’s illustrious father Biju Patnaik could never score a back-to-back win.

Reacting to the historic win, Naveen said he was feeling humbled by the mandate. "The people of Orissa have voted us for our pro-poor programmes," he said.

The party also exceeded its performance in Lok Sabha by leading in 14 of the 21 seats with rank newcomers like Siddhant Mohapatra leading in Berhampur seat ahead of union minister Chandrasekhar Sahoo of Congress by a comfortable margin.

Powered by a towering leadership of Naveen Patnaik and the populist scheme of Rs 2/kg rice, the party bettered its previous tally of 61 seats in the 2004 assembly polls. It even bettered its tally of 2000. Naveen was leading comfortably in Hinjili assembly constituency like several of his cabinet colleagues while his bete noire Bijoy Mohapatra of BJP was trailing by over 5000 votes in Patkura assembly seat.

UP: BSP ahead in 24, SP in 23, Cong 18 and BJP in 8 seats

LUCKNOW: Ruling BSP was leading in 23 of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh followed by its arch rival Samajwadi Party in 22 seats, Congress in 21 and BJP in eight, official sources said here.

Top Congress leaders including its president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and BJP's Varun Gandhi were leading over their rivals by huge margins in their respective constituencies in Uttar Pradesh with BSP, SP and the Congress virtually running neck-to-neck in trends.

While Sonia is leading in Rae Bareli by a margin of over 1.42 lakh votes over her BSP rival R S Kushwaha, Rahul has established a lead of over 95,000 votes over Ashish Shukla of BSP in Amethi.

BJP candidate from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi is ahead of Congress's V M Singh by over 1.48 lakh votes.

Former BJP leader Kalyan Singh, who is contesting as an independent from Etah is leading over his BSP rival Devendra Singh Yadav by a margin of over 38,000 votes.

In Mainpuri, SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav is leading by a margin of over 50,000 votes over Vinay Shakya of BSP.

Cricketer-turned-politician Mohd Azharuddin, who is contesting from Moradabad as Congress nominee, is ahead of BJP's Sarvesh Kumar by a margin of over 15,000 votes.

Former Union Minister and Congress nominee from Sultanpur Sanjay Singh is leading by a margin of over 45,000 votes over Mohd Tahir of BSP.

BJP leader Maneka Gandhi lost to rival Dharmendra Kumar of SP in Aonla.

Andhrapradesh Election News

Hyderabad:Y S Rajasekhara Reddy appeared all set to lead a second term as Congress inched towards the crucial 148 seats mark. Initial trends indicated that Congress was leading in 138 seats while the TDP was breathing down its neck leading in 125 seats though the total of the TDP-led grand alliance including TRS, CPI and CPM was more than the Congress, standing at 142 seats. The much-hyped Prajarajyam Party was tottering, leading only in 20 seats with PRP president Chiranjeevi himself trailing in Palacole seat while leading in Tirupati, the second seat from which he contested. The AIMIM was leading in seven seats while independents were leading in four seats. The Congress is likely to take the support of AIMIM and independents if required to form the government. At least half a dozen ministers of the YSR government were trailing and may lose. They include Energy and Minority Minister Shabbir Ali from Kamareddy and R&B Minister Jeevan Reddy from Jagitiyala

APCC president D Srinivas appears to be losing from Nizamabad (Urban) assembly constituency.

There were clear indications that voting patterns were different for Assembly and Lok Sabha. The Congress was leading in 22 LS seats while the TDP was leading in 11. The TRS was leading in only 4 seats with PRP in 2 seats. TRS President K Chandrasekhara Rao was trailing from Mahbubnagar LS constituency. In Hyderabad Asaduddin Owaisi of the AIMIM was also trailing behind TDP's Zahid Ali Khan after the second round of counting.

BJD poised for hat-trick in Orissa, not to suppport Cong-led govt

BHUBANESWAR: Poised for a hat-trick third term BJD supremo and chief minister Naveen Patnaik today said that his party would work harder for the state's development.

"I feel absolutely humbled by the tremendous generosity shown by the people of my state towards the BJD," Patnaik told reporters here.

"I would like to express my deep gratitude to the people. We shall work much harder and ensure peace, harmony, progress, development and welfare of the state," he said.

Asked which political formation his party would support at the Centre, Patnaik said that BJD would not align with a Congress-led or BJP-led alliance.

"We have been repeatedly saying that we are not going to support a Congress-led or a BJP-led government at the Centre," Naveen Patnaik told reporters here.

"I stand by my earlier statement," he said. "The BJD is a regional party and naturally our focus is on our state. We will like the government at the Centre to fulfil the just demands of the people of Orissa," Patnaik added.

"We are now receiving the trends, let the complete results come. After that I will sit with senior party leaders to chalk out our future course of action," he said.

TN leads: DMK-led front ahead in 27, AIADMK front in 9 out of 39

CHENNAI: The ruling DMK appeared to be doing well in the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu establishing early leads in most of the 21 seats it DMK president M Karunanidhi contested but its key ally Congress was fairing badly while the AIADMK led front was ahead in nine constituencies as per latest trends.

Of the 36 (Total 39) constituencies for which trends are available, the DMK front was ahead in 27 while the AIADMK and its allies have established early leads in nine seats.

In neighbouring Puducherry, Union Minister and Congress candidate V Narayanasamy has established a lead of around 38,500 votes over his nearest PMK rival M Ramadoss.

DMK's arch rival AIADMK seems to be gaining at the expense of the Congress, whose prominent leaders including Union home minister P Chidambaram (Sivaganga), his cabinet colleagues Manishankar Aiyar (Mayiladuthurai) and E V K S Elangovan (Erode) were trailing.

Congress, which had ten seats in the outgoing Lok Sabha and contested 16 seats this time, is leading only in Theni, Cuddalore, Dindigul and Arani.

Notable among the DMK candidates doing well are chief minister M Karunanidhi and son M K Azhagiri, leading by around 62,000 votes against CPI-M rival P Mohan in Madurai and Union Ministers T R Baalu (Sriperumbudur) and A Raja (Nilgiris).

DMK's ally VCK leader Thol Tirumavalavan was ahead in Chidambaram by 18,000 votes against E Ponnusamy of the PMK.

MDMK leader Vaiko was trailing Congress rival Manik Tagore by 4,100 votes in Virudhunagar at the end of the fifth round.

Congress leads in 20 seats in Rajasthan, BJP in five

Those from the BJP who had established early leads were Dushyant Singh, son of Vasundhara Raje, in Jhalawar-Baran, Arjun Ram Meghwal in Bikaner and Ramsingh Kaswan in Churu.

Trends indicate setback for BJP, Shiv Sena in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: Early counting trends in Maharashtra on Saturday indicated a setback for the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena combine, with the Congress and its ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leading in many seats.

As per counting trends at 10.30 am, the BJP and the Shiv Sena were leading in 8 seats each, while the Congress is leading in 14 and the NCP in 10 seats, an election department official said.

Other parties like Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Samajwadi Party were leading in one seat each. There are 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, Congress had bagged 13, NCP nine, Republican Party of India (RPI) one, BJP had 13 and Shiv Sena 12 seats.

The poll panel has not announced any final result so far.

Nilekani welcomes 'decisive' verdict of people

New Delhi:Welcoming the 'decisive' verdict of the people in the Lok Sabha elections, Infosys Co-Chairman Nandan Nilekani said the UPA Government in its second stint has been given a mandate for taking "bold" reforms.

Commenting on the likelihood of the UPA returning to power, Nilekani said "these people (UPA) are sincere and therefore they deserve a second chance".

"It is a very decisive verdict. Also the message here is get on with bold steps, with bold reforms," he said in his first comments on the trends that the counting of votes has thrown up.

"Let's call it more of a national thing ... At the end of the day, at the national level there is vote for stability, of vote for decisive government," Nilekani said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in his first term, may have been cowed down by the Left presence but in his second term he would have a free hand, he said.

"This is the first time you have the advantage," Nilekani said. "Also I think this time (for) the government there is no ideological barrier. In other words all the supporting allies have no ideological dispute with the Congress," he added.

Commerce Minister Kamal Nath said the UPA retaining power would see the stock markets reacting positively.

"(The) stock market is going to look at a responsible government under the leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh... The PM (Singh) knows the economy," he said.

The clear verdict for the pre-poll UPA alliance would mean little hang-up on key policy issues, Nilekani said. "I think that advantage means they can really decide the agenda very quickly," he added.

Left bastion crumbles in Kerala, West Bengal

NEW DELHI:
Dramatic reversals suffered by the Left parties in the Lok Sabha polls will result in their being confined to sidelines after they held centrestage in national politics in the past five years.

The Left bastion in West Bengal and Kerala crumbled and heavily dented by alliances led by the Congress after breathing fire against its estranged partner and forging unity with the regional parties under the banner of Third Front with their tally going down by more than half.

The four parties--CPI-M, CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc-- had a total tally of 60 in the 2004 elections.

In Kerala where the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front had got 19 of the 20 seats in 2004, this time got only four.

A major factor, according to analysts, was the serious factional fight amongst top CPI(M) leaders—Kerala chief minister V S Achuthanandan and party state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

In West Bengal where the Left had fought Trinamool Congress on issues relating to industrialisation and land acquisition, the Mamata Banerjee-led party and Congress gave them a drubbing, bringing down the Left tally to its lowest level.

The Trinamool Congress-Congress combine increased its lead in 24 Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal while its electoral ally SUCI was ahead in one seat trends of which were available till 1300 hrs.

Of the 42 seats, CPI-M-led ruling Left Front was leading in 16 constituencies.

Senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh has established a lead of more than 2.40 lakh votes in Darjeeling constituency.

Trinamool Congress alone established a lead in 18 seats while its poll partner Congress was ahead in six constituencies.

Of the 16 seats, the LF candidates were leading the CPI-M was ahead in 10, RSP-2, CPI-2 and Forward Bloc- 2.

Prominent among those leading were External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee (Jangipur), Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee (Kolkata South) and Deepa Dasmunshi, wife of Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi in Raigunj constituency and Basudeb Acharya (CPI-M). P

In their attack against the Congress-led UPA government, the Left parties had raised a major hue and cry over the Indo-US nuclear deal and later withdrew support with less than a year to go before their UPA term came to an end.
