Three Khel Ratnas shine bright at Rashtrapati Bhawan

NEW DELHI: Olympic heroes boxer Vijender Singh and wrestler Sushil Kumar, along with four-time world champion woman pugilist M C Mary Kom, were Mary Kom on Saturday conferred the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in a glittering ceremony.

For the first time in the history of national sports awards, three sportspersons were individually bestowed India's highest sporting honour, which comes with an enhanced cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakh and a newly-designed statuette.

It was also a red letter day for 15 other sportspersons, who received the Arjuna award from President Pratibha Patil at the Ashok Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Prominent among them were cricketer Gautam Gambhir, world number seven badminton player Saina Nehwal, Asian chess champion Tania Sachdev and hockey player Ignace Tirkey.

Like the Khel Ratna winners, Arjuna awardees also got a newly-designed statuette, along with citations and an enhanced cash prize of Rs five lakh each.

For the first time in six years, a cricketer -- Gambhir -- was bestowed the Arjuna award. Since 2003, when off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was given the honour, no male cricketer had been included in the Arjuna awards list.

Gambhir is currently the world number one Test batsman in ICC rankings and has been consistently doing well as an opener.

Saina, on the other hand, has risen meteorically in the international circuit over the past couple of years winning two premier events. She also made it to quarter-finals in her Olympic debut in Beijing.

Saina's mentor and former badminton player Pullela Gopichand, India's assistant boxing coach at the Beijing Olympics Jaidev Bisht and Sushil's coach Satpal Singh were among the four Dronacharya awardees.

They also received a statuette, citation and an enhanced cash prize of Rs five lakh.

"It's the biggest moment of my career and I feel honoured," said Beijing Olympics bronze medallist Vijender, who will leave for the World Championships in Italy in the wee hours Sunday morning.

"I am happy that wrestling has got recognition. It is a big achievement for me," added Sushil, who also won a bronze medal, India's first in 54 years, in Beijing.

Mary Kom dedicated her award to her two-year-old twin sons K Rechungvar Kom and K Khupneivar Kom.

"This is for my sons. They are my life. Had they been older, I would have brought them here," the 27-year-old four-time world champion said.

The Sports Ministry also instituted a new award this year, 'The Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar', which was shared by Tata Steel Limited and the Railways Sports Promotion Board in different categories.

After the furore caused by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh's no-show at the Padma awards this year, the sports ministry had issued stern guidelines asking athletes to inform in advance if they were to remain absent.

Chandrayaan, India's moon mission comes to an abrupt end

Bangalore: Ten months after it was launched, India's maiden moon mission the ambitious Chandrayaan-1 came to an abrupt end today after ISRO lost communication with the spacecraft, cutting short the dream odyssey that was expected to last two years.

"The mission is definitely over. We have lost contact with the spacecraft," said Project Director of the Chandrayaan-1 mission M Annadurai.

However, he said: "It (Chandrayaan-1) has done its job technically...100 per cent. Scientifically also, it has done almost 90-95 percent of its job".

The two-year mission, launched on October 22 last year with much fanfare, was abandoned early today after the after radio contact with the mooncraft was abruptly lost at 0130 hours.

The Deep Space Network at Byalalu near here received the data from the 1,380 kg Chandrayaan-1, which carried 11 instruments on board, including six from overseas, during the previous orbit up to 0025 hours.

ISRO is conducting detailed review of the telemetry data from the spacecraft. "We will analyse as to what happened," Annadurai said.

Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, launched by homegrown PSLV-C11 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, has completed 312 days in orbit, making more than 3,400 orbits around the moon.

It has provided large volume of data from sophisticated sensors such as terrain mapping camera, hyper-spectral imager and moon mineralogy mapper, meeting most of the scientific objectives of the mission.

ISRO said last month Chandrayaan-1 had sent more than 70,000 images of the lunar surface which provide breathtaking views of lunar mountains and craters, especially craters in the permanently shadowed areas of the Moon's polar region.

BJP to announce new roadmap soon: Sources

NEW DELHI: Sources say that BJP, currently dealing with the leadership crisis, is likely to announce soon a new roadmap for the party.

Times Now report says that new roadmap will outline the individual responsibilities for the party leaders and ‘a big announcement’ is expected to be made shortly.

Sources indicate that BJP may announce the intent of leadership change without the timeframe.

Party president Rajnath Singh has told the RSS that he would abide by any decision that the outfit would take including that of stepping down, sources told Times Now.

Senior BJP leader L K Advani on Saturday met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, a day after the Sangh head appeared to have stepped in to resolve the crisis in the party.

Advani drove down to Keshavkunj, the RSS office here and was closeted with Bhagwat.

At a press conference on Friday, the RSS chief had sent out a clear message to crisis-ridden BJP to put its house in order by working unitedly and expressed confidence that the party would "rise from the ashes".

Advani's meeting with Bhagwat follows a series of discussions senior BJP leaders had with the RSS chief over the past two days.

BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, M Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar had met Bhagwat yesterday and are understood to have discussed the problems afflicting the party.

Earlier on Saturday, the RSS chief on Saturday held a meeting with Advani’s ‘bete noire’ Murli Manohar Joshi to discuss internal squabbles in the party and the road ahead.

The meeting, held at Joshi's residence, came at a time when BJP is grappling with a virtual war of succession among its second rung leaders.

Joshi, a former party president who is considered close to Bhagwat and the RSS, had hinted soon after BJP's drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls that Advani should not become Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

He had then suggested that Advani could replace Atal Bihari Vajpayee as NDA chairperson and walk into virtual retirement.

While there are reports that Advani may put his camp leaders in top positions before he quits, Saturday's meeting between Joshi and Bhagwat shows RSS may still be undecided over the issue.

PM dismisses Pokhran II speculations; asks BJP to settle down

Barmer (Rajasthan): Apparently not wanting to wade into problems of BJP, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Saturday that what was happening in that party was not good and felt the controversies over Kandahar and Pokhran-II were needless.

In his first comments on the turmoil in BJP, he told reporters in Barmer that infighting in that party was "not good". "It (infighting in BJP) is not good. In a democracy, stability in political parties is necessary. If there is instability, it will have an impact on the country," he said when asked about the crisis in BJP.

Asked whether there was instability in BJP, Singh, who was in Ramsar, about 60 km from Barmer, to see progress of NREGA projects, said there should be stability in all parties.

To questions on the raging controversy over the Kandahar hijack episode arising out of differences among BJP leaders -- L K Advani, Jaswant Singh, Yashwant Sinha besides former National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra, he said, "what can I say about it. I was not there."

"It is not correct," he said in reply to a question about the atmosphere created by the bad blood between the BJP leaders.

When specifically asked about BJP leaders insisting that Advani was present at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Jaswant Singh going to Kandahar in a plane with three terrorists, the Prime Minister said "I was not not there. Yaswant and Jaswant were there."

On the controversy triggered by former DRDO scientist K Santhanam on Pokhran-II tests, Singh said, "a wrong impression has been given by some scientists which is needless."

1984 anti-Sikh riots case: Court awards lifer to 3

New Delhi: A Delhi court awarded life imprisonment to three people for attempting to murder members of a Sikh family here in 1984 anti-Sikh riots and came down heavily on ‘contrived inaction’ of the police and the Government of the day which led to loss of "priceless lives".

Indicting the Delhi Police, the court said that "instead of showing their allegiance to the rule of law, our Constitution and the oath taken by them, a better part of their course was found toeing line of their political rulers".

Convicts Mangal Sen alias Billa, Brij Mohan Verma and Bhagat Singh, all in their 60s now, were also fined Rs 6.20 lakh by Additional Sessions Judge Surinder S Rathi after being held guilty of attempt to murder, rioting, dacoity in Shastri Nagar, north Delhi.

The court slammed the Delhi police and the Government for its inability to tackle the riots that followed the assassination of the then PM Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

"History would never forgive the police officials who were at the helm of affairs and the government of the day for their unprecedented slothful and quiescent role.

"But for the contrived inaction and sluggish response of Delhi police and the Government of the day, scores of priceless lives and valuable property could have been saved," the court noted.

India shying away from peace talks: Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Saturday accused India of "shying away" from peace talks even though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had acknowledged that dialogue is the only way forward for the two countries.

"If the road forward is dialogue, then what are they shying away for? They should come and sit and talk," Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told a news conference at the Foreign Office here.

He pointed out that Prime Minister Singh had "committed to a dialogue with Pakistan" and said that "dialogue is the only way forward".

Both countries did not think war is an option for resolving issues as it would be "suicidal" for them, he said.

"When war is no longer an option, what other option do you have? A negotiated settlement and dialogue is the way forward," Qureshi added.

He was responding to questions about the resumption of the bilateral peace process, which was put on hold by India following last year's audacious terror attacks in Mumbai.

"They (India) hesitate on dialogue. They want cooperation (in probing the Mumbai attacks) and give us a dossier. They want progress and then shy away from talks. Both things cannot go together," he said.

He indicated that if talks are not resumed, the agenda would be "handed over to the extremists" and they would determine the future course of events.

Asked about media reports that Prime Minister Singh had said the situation was not conducive for talks with Pakistan, Qureshi shot back: "Then what was (the joint statement of) Sharm El-Sheikh? What was that agreement? If there is no dialogue, where are we going?"

He said India had not yet responded to an invitation extended to Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao to come to Islamabad for talks.

The proposed meeting between Rao and her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir was to have set the agenda for a meeting between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, he said.

Pakistan had no objections to the Foreign Secretaries meeting in a third country, he added.

Qureshi also pointed out that New Delhi is yet to respond to Islamabad's request to provide information about threats from Pakistan-based terror groups that Prime Minister Singh had spoken about some time ago.

Pakistan is "willing to engage" India because this had been agreed on by the premiers of the two countries during their meeting at Sharm El-Sheikh last month. "Pakistan has no worries. We are firm on our stance... Normalisation of ties is in the interest of both countries," he said.

Qureshi also said former central minister Jaswant Singh's expulsion from the BJP for wiring an academic work on Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah "reflected the mindset" that was affecting New Delhi's approach to the resumption of the peace process.

"Where is the vision and the leadership? Leaders are supposed to find new openings when all roads are closed," he said, adding that "domestic politics was playing a big role" in influencing the Indian government's stance.

The latest dossier provided by India on the Mumbai incident is being examined by the interior ministry, Qureshi said, adding it would not be appropriate for him to comment on its contents.

Qureshi also accused India of trying with "much fanfare" to isolate Pakistan in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks. This approach had failed because Pakistan had mounted an effective diplomatic response, he said.

Govt to infuse additional equity in AI

New Delhi: The Government is understood to have decided to infuse additional equity in Air India and give a soft loan to counter the financial crunch, as a high-level Committee asked the Civil Aviation Ministry to move a note on the issue for consideration of the Union Cabinet.

The Committee of Secretaries, headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar, which reviewed the turnaround plan of the ailing carrier, directed the Ministry to prepare the cabinet note on the matter.

The note, to be prepared in consultation with the Finance Ministry, would be ready for circulation to the Cabinet Ministers in the next seven to ten days, official sources said after the meeting here.

Though there was no official confirmation of the quantum of equity infusion and the soft loan the government could give to the national carrier, there were indications that its equity base, which now stands at only Rs 145 crore, would be enhanced by at least Rs 2,500 crore.

While the government would make only a partial contribution as equity infusion to the airline, a major part of resource mobilisation is likely to be through issuance of Initial Public Offer or infrastructure bonds, they said, adding the Cabinet would now take a final call on the issue.

India has excellent investment climate: PM

BARMER (RAJASTHAN): Oil exploration major Cairn's success story demonstrates that India is an excellent destination for foreign investment,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Saturday.

Speaking after inaugurating the Mangala field, India's largest oil discovery in two decades, he said: "It can be demonstrated through Cairn's contribution that there is a very good climate for investment in India".

Urging foreign investors to come to India to take advantage of the opportunities available here, the prime minister said: "I call on investors from different parts of the globe to come here and assure them that they will get full and honest support from the Indian government for all facilities."

Manmohan Singh turned a valve on the dais to symbolically start the Mangala field's production, amidst cheers from the assembled audience of dignitaries, employees and local people, with the Oscar-winning song "Jai Ho" playing in the background.

He was also presented with the first drops of oil from the field in a container.

The prime minister said that the inauguration of the Mangala field was bound to bring enormous prosperity to Rajasthan.

"It is a historical fact that whenever oil has been found in a country, it has developed very fast. I believe after the oil production here, there will be a new Rajasthan where there is no poverty and less unemployment.

"Our country is moving forward at a rapid rate. But to remove poverty, there is a lot left to do," Manmohan Singh said, noting if this rapid rate of growth has to be improved, there will be further need for energy.

"Energy production is taking place, but the demand for oil and gas is also increasing," he added.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot were present at the function, held in a massive air-conditioned tent, which had eight large screens hanging from the roof to enable the audience to watch the event closely. The site is 125 km from the India-Pakistan border.

Mangala's peak production of 125,000 barrels per day (bpd) will be reached in the first half of 2010.

Along with the production at its Bhagyam and Aishwarya fields, the aggregate peak production by Cairn India will be 175,000 bpd or 20 percent of India's domestic production - enough to power 3.4 million cars daily or fill up 4.5 million cooking gas cylinders a month.

The three fields are expected to save the country $1.5 billion annually as import bill over the next 10 years. It would also earn the government $30 billion across the life of the field by way of taxes, royalties and profit petroleum revenue.

Deora has said the central government would get Rs.46,000 crore (Rs.460 billion) as profit petroleum revenue. The Rajasthan government would get another Rs.12,000 crore (Rs.120 billion) as royalty revenue for the first five years, he said.

India imports over 70 percent of its crude oil needs. At its peak, Cairn's production will lead to cutting down about 8 percent of India's import bill at current oil prices.

Fisichella on pole for Belgian Grand Prix

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS: Italian veteran Giancarlo Fisichella on Saturday claimed the most stunning pole position of the season when he came out on top for Force India in an amazing qualifying session for Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.

It was the Force India team's first-ever pole and the fourth for 36-year-old Fisichella, who has been heavily linked with a switch to Ferrari for next month's Italian Grand Prix.

His last pole came at the 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix.

After this, he will be under pressure to stay with the team that has given him a new lease of life - and added to the lustre of the 'golden oldies' running in Formula One.

Last Sunday's European Grand Prix in Valencia was won by 37-year-old Rubens Barrichello of Brawn GP and Fisichella's front-row partner at the start of Sunday's classic contest is to be his fellow Italian Jarno Trulli, 35, of Toyota.

Fisichella, veteran of 223 Grands Prix in a 14-year career in Formula One, was overwhelmed by his success.

"It's unbelievable," the Roman said.

"I didn't expect to be on pole. It's amazing. It's fantastic. I'm so happy. Pole position! Is it true?

Fisichella will be seeking his fourth win in Formula One on Sunday in a career that has seen him racing at the front with Renault and struggling at the back with the Force India team in its previous incarnations.

He added: "I need to thank the team because they did a fantastic job. I'm really, really happy - and really confident for tomorrow!"

Third place on Sunday's grid went to German Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber with Barrichello in fourth.

Polish driver Robert Kubica was fifth for BMW head of Germans Timo Glock and Sebastian Vettel, for Toyota and Red Bull respectively, with Australian Mark Webber ninth in the second Red Bull and German Nico Rosberg 10th for Williams.

Fisichella's achievement overshadowed the shock departures in Q2 of world championship leader Jenson Button of Brawn GP and defending champion and his compatriot, Briton Lewis Hamilton of McLaren Mercedes.

Button said: "I didn't it make because I wasn't fast enough. It's going to make tomorrow very difficult. I didn't have any pace on the soft tyres and every time I hit the brakes, the rear would move.

"It is pretty disastrous for tomorrow really."

Hamilton reflected: "I went into qualifying nervous as hell. I didn't know where we were going to be. We knew we didn't have the downforce of the others. I'm losing so much time in the middle sector. There was nothing I could do, I was on the ragged edge. But we can have a little bit of fun with Kers from down there."

Fisichella's performance was an extraordinary conclusion to a crazy session run in unpredictable conditions with most teams appearing to be left scratching their heads over the performances.

Trulli said: "It's a mystery. We haven't done anything on the car compared to the last few races and suddenly here we are competitive. It is great, we were going through a difficult moment. We don't understand why we are struggling so much and then we are competitive sometimes like today. I am very confident for tomorrow."

Heidfeld said: "It's obviously very important to everyone in the team. We said that BMW wants to leave on a high. It's even more important for the people in Hinwil - we are working on securing the future of the team and it is good we can show we have good performance."

Qualifying (Q3) times:

1. Giancarlo Fisichella (ITA) Force India-Mercedes 1:46.308
2. Jarno Trulli (ITA) Toyota 1:46.395
3. Nick Heidfeld (GER) BMW Sauber 1:46.500
4. Rubens Barrichello (BRA) Brawn-Mercedes 1:46.513
5. Robert Kubica (POL) BMW Sauber 1:46.586
6. Kimi Raikkonen (FIN) Ferrari 1:46.633
7. Timo Glock (GER) Toyota 1:46.677
8. Sebastian Vettel (GER) Red Bull-Renault 1:46.761
9. Mark Webber (AUS) Red Bull-Renault 1:46.788
10. Nico Rosberg (GER) Williams-Toyota 1:47.362.

Cricketers' preparatory camp gathers momentum in Bangalore

BANGALORE: India's preparations for the upcoming overseas tours gained momentum with players practising catching and engaging in bowling drills on the third day of the camp on Saturday.

Ishant Sharma, RP Singh and Ashish Nehra were seen in action over an extended period of time. The team members practised for over four hours at a stretch.

The camp concludes on Sunday. Most of the players are taking part in the Corporate Trophy tournament starting at Mohali, Dharamsala, Vishakhapatnam and Bangalore from September 1-8.

Thereafter, the Indian team would leave for Sri Lanka for the tri-series, followed by Champions Trophy in

Four-wicket Herath leaves Kiwis in a spin

Colombo: Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath rabbed four wickets as Sri Lanka pushed New Zealand towards a massive defeat in the second and final cricket Test here on Saturday.

The Kiwis, battling for survival after being set an improbable victory target of 494 runs, slumped to 182-6 in their second knock by close of the fourth day's play.

Daniel Flynn was the only top order batsman to defy the Sri Lankan bowlers with 50, the left-hander's best performance in the series after scores of 14, 0 and 13 in the previous three innings.

At stumps, Jacob Oram was unbeaten on seven and skipper Daniel Vettori was on five.

Sri Lanka won the first Test in Galle by 202 runs last week and a 2-0 sweep of the series will make them number two in the official Test rankings behind South Africa.

The hosts currently share the second spot with India.

Earlier, Sri Lanka declared their second innings soon after lunch at 311-5, in which skipper Kumar Sangakkara scored 109 and former captain Mahela Jayawardene made 96.

Jayawardene, who hit 92 in the first innings, missed a century for the second time in the Test when he edged Iain O'Brien to Taylor at first slip soon after lunch.

Sangakkara declared at the fall of Jayawardene's wicket, leaving his bowlers four-and-a-half sessions to bowl out the tourists.

Tim McIntosh and Martin Guptill put on 36 for the first wicket before both batsmen were dismissed in the space of five runs.

McIntosh, who plodded for 48 minutes to make seven, was bowled as he shouldered arms to a straight ball from fast bowler Dammika Prasad.

Leadership issue should be decided by BJP: RSS

NEW DELHI: Commenting on the current turmoil in the BJP, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday said Sangh would not interfere in the internal matters of the BJP and the leadership issue should be resolved by the party itself.

The RSS chief was speaking out for the first time since the expulsion of former union minister Jaswant Singh from the BJP for his book on founder of Pakistan Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

BJP has to "think and decide" its own future, Bhagwat said, while stressing that the ideal age for the leadership of the Sangh Parivar it heads was "50 to 60 years".

Referring to his recent suggestion to TV channel Times Now that a younger leadership take over the reins of the BJP, Bhagwat said: "Fifty to sixty years is the average age for the Sangh leadership and it's for the political party to decide what should be the right age for it."

He also said the RSS will not comment on the Kandahar episode.

Rejecting the suggestion by senior BJP leader Arun Shourie that RSS should take over reins of the party, Bhagwat repeatedly said that BJP itself will have to decide on its matters, including leadership issue and whether LK Advani should go or stay, reported PTI.

"Whatever is happening (in BJP) is not good," said Bhagwat, who faced a volley of questions on BJP's internal squabbles.

"(Lok Sabha) poll results have given a jolt, severe jolt to BJP. They will have to regain balance," he said, adding "I feel they will be able to do it.... BJP will emerge from the crisis."

He said there were systems in place which could be invoked by the BJP leadership to address its problems.

Replying to a question, the RSS chief said "BJP will not perish. It will rise from ashes."

Bhagwat also made it clear that RSS does not believe in giving "unsolicited advice" to the BJP.

"If the party (BJP) wants some help, we will give. If the party wants advice, we will give. What to do and what not to do is for the party to decide," he said.

The RSS chief, who discussed the developments in BJP with party president Rajnath Singh on Thursday, said he had suggested that BJP leaders should "work unitedly and move forward".

Contending that this would happen, he said the BJP does follow the advice and, "therefore, I believe it will get out of crisis."

Asked whether he was worried about the future of the BJP, Bhagwat said "we should be concerned about everyone, but we are not worried...everything will be alright." (Chinta sabki honi chahiye, lekin chintit nahin hain).

It was "too early" to term the developments in the party as its downfall, he noted.

He also rubbished suggestions that RSS was losing grip on the BJP. "It is a wrong perception," he added.

To questions about who should be the leader of BJP and who should be promoted, Bhagwat said it was for the party to decide.

Advani was at centre of cash-for-vote drama in LS: Jaswant Singh

NEW DELHI: Firing a fresh salvo, Jaswant Singh has said that senior BJP leader L K Advani was "at the centre" of the cash-for-votes scam drama enacted in the Lok Sabha last year.

"It's a great sense of pity. Here was a man who has consumed by an ambition to be Prime Minister, and that desire made him commit so many mistakes.

"Do you know this whole wretched thing of money for votes is a classic example of wrong decision making and it's extremely troubling that he did not stand up and say no. Advaniji was at the centre of this whole drama," he told a news magazine.

Singh was referring to the episode in the Lok Sabha during the trust vote in July last year when three BJP MPs displayed bundles of currency
notes totalling Rs one crore claiming they were being offered as bribe to support the government.

Singh said the facts were clear and he stumbled on to the whole thing when a very strange looking fellow was brought to his house by Sudheendra Kulkarni, a former aide of Advani.

"I was not consulted but I was appalled that Advaniji was giving the MPs the go ahead to display money in Parliament," he said adding that Advani had two choices -- either to take the money to the Speaker or into the House. But he told the MPs to display the money in Parliament.

Singh said it was a matter of great sadness that Advani had singularly failed in his function as a leader to lead. A leader will have to lead by example and not through diktats, vague and unspecified insinuations and fears.

Citing the example of the army where leaders take responsibility, he said there were numerous examples when Advani would either keep quite or transfer responsibility to somebody else on occasions that troubled him and where he is likely to come under fire. "That is not the trait of a leader."

On Arun Shourie's description of Rajnath Singh as a Humpty Dumpty, Singh said the BJP president was a provincial leader who should never have been pushed up.

On BJP, he said "this is no longer a political party. It is a cult or a sect. It has been reduced to the proprietary partnership of a few. This has come about under the leadership of Advani. To explain superficially, the 116 BJP MPs today are like lost waifs."

The former external affairs and defence minister said he did not support the decisions like banning of overflights to Pakistan and deployment of troops during 'Operation Parakram' when he was away on some visit.

He said he was also greatly distressed when the BSF was sent into Bangladesh and a "wounding photograph" of the body of a BSF soldier being carried slunge on a bamboo appeared in the media.

"I never really was able to illicit an answer as to who ordered the BSF to go into Bangladesh. Is it not the home ministry," he said.

RSS will not interfere in internal matters of BJP: Bhagwat

New Delhi: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Friday that the age group of 55 to 60 is the ideal for leaders of the Sangh Parivar, and added that it was for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to decide at what age its leaders will quit office and retire.

While stating that the RSS preferred not to interfere in the internal matters of the BJP or other affiliates, Bhagwat said: “It is for the party to decide on the leadership issue. Opinions given by me to party leaders are not official. The RSS does not advise BJP in matters of governance.”

His comments were with reference to the criticisms launched against senior BJP leader L K Advani by some of his former and current colleagues, including Arun Shourie, Yashwant Sinha and Jaswant Singh, besides former National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra.

On the 1999 Kandahar hijack episode, he said the RSS had no role to play. When asked for his reaction to the criticism being levelled against Advani by his colleagues for not accepting that he was present when all key decisions relating to that incident were taken, he said that he had no comment to make, and added that it was for the BJP to say anything on the matter.

“We advise and support the BJP, but decisions in internal matters is theirs. We are never worried, we will tide over the crisis.

He repeatedly refused to comment on the BJP crisis, and as far as Shourie’s comments were concerned, he said: “Don’t want to comment on what Shourie said about others.”

Jinnah, Gandhi shared the dream of federal India: Jaswant

Islamabad: Insisting that a federal India was the dream of both Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi, former External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh has said that the country would have been "a global power" now had it not been "cut up" to form Pakistan.

Singh, whose controversial new book 'Jinnah: India-Partition-Independence' led to his expulsion from BJP, repeated his claim that first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru along with the then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the Congress party had contributed to the partition of the Indian subcontinent.

A federal India was the dream of both Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi but "we let the country be cut up. Patel and Nehru agreed to what Jinnah demanded but in a truncated form. Today we would have been a global power," he said in an interview to Pakistan's 'Dawn News' channel.

However, he also said the future envisaged for India by Nehru, especially on issues like secularism, is yet to be realised. The "destiny of India Nehru spoke of had not been realised," Singh said responding to a question on the fate of secularism in India.

Apart from being reviled by his party for his stance on Pakistan's founder Jinnah, Singh's book has been banned in the BJP-ruled state of Gujarat.

Singh referred to the ban and incidents of the burning of his book and said he felt "wounded" as if an "innocent child had been burnt."

The former External Affairs Minister also spoke on a wide range of issues during the interview, including relations between India and Pakistan.

Kasab trial: Key 26/11 witness reported missing

Mumbai: A key witness in the 26/11 attacks case who had deposed against accused Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed at the trial failed to appear before the court on Friday with the prosecution saying that he was "missing".

The witness, Nurudin Shaikh, told the court that the accused - Faheem and Sabauddin - had met him in Nepal and in his presence they discussed about the maps of some locations in Mumbai, which were later targeted by militants during the November 26 attacks last year.

The court had called the witness on Friday for cross-examination at 11 AM but he failed to turn up.

Special public prosecutor Ujjawal Nikam told the court that crime branch officials had gone to Goregaon residence of the witness to fetch him but his wife had said that Shaikh had left home early morning, saying that he has to go to the court.

"This is a serious matter," judge M L Tahaliyani observed and said he would decide later on what steps the court should take in the matter.

Nikam also said that the identity of the witness had been kept secret earlier and was disclosed to the defence lawyer only yesterday for cross-examination.

According to crime branch, the witness is a childhood friend of Faheem and is staying in the same locality where Fahim stayed in the city.

Faheem and Sabauddin, both Indian nationals, are facing trial along with Pakistani national Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab.

Shaikh on Thursday had told the court that maps of some locations in Mumbai were made by the duo at the instance of wanted accused Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.

SC defers hearing on Ambani gas row to October 20

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday deferred hearing on petition filed in regard to the Ambani gas dispute to October 20.

A bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan decided to pose the matter for October after Reliance Industries counsel suggested the matter be heard on the 20th of that month.

Anil Ambani group counsel Mukul Rohtagi said he had no objection.

The cross appeals filed by Mukesh and Anil Ambani group firm on the petition filed by the government was to come up for hearing on September 1, but would have had to be postponed because the Chief Justice was to head the bench on the case was supposed to lead a constitutional bench on that very day.

AI likely to table financial turnaround plan on Sat

New Delhi: Cash-strapped Air India is likely to table a detailed financial turnaround plan at a meeting of the high-level Committee of Secretaries, showing proposals to cut costs and enhance revenue generation over the next five years.

The plan, vetted by the Finance and Civil Aviation Ministries, is likely to include proposals relating to the nature of financial assistance it wants from the Government, including equity infusion and soft loan.

While the Government may make only a partial contribution as equity infusion to the airline, a major part of resource mobilisation is likely to be through options like partial divestment of government equity, issuance of initial public offer or infrastructure bonds, informed sources said.

Officials of the Finance and Civil Aviation Ministries and Air India have held series of discussion over the past few weeks to finalise these proposals, many of which had come up for discussion last month at the first meeting of the CoS, headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekar.

The Government had then asked the Petroleum Ministry to extend the credit limit on the purchase of jet fuel by Air India for at least three more months.

Once finalised, the proposals would be sent to the Union Cabinet for its approval, the sources said, adding that the much-needed funding for Air India would be released by the government only after the Cabinet nod.

SAT dismisses shareholder's plea on Bharti-MTN open offer

Mumbai: The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) ‘dismissed’ an appeal by a Bharti Airtel shareholder that challenged a SEBI guidance exempting South Africa's MTN from making an open offer to Bharti shareholders.

A bench comprising Justices N K Sodhi and Samar Ray observed that the appeal was "premature" and dismissed it as ‘infructious’.

Deepak Mehra, a shareholder of Bharti Airtel who holds around 100 shares aggregating to around Rs 40,000, sought to overturn an informal guidance issued by SEBI on June 22.

The market regulator had said that MTN need not make an open offer to Bharti Airtel shareholders in India as its shareholding in the Sunil Mittal-promoted firm would be through Global Depository Reciepts (GDRs).

SEBI said the open offer will only trigger once the GDRs, issued to MTN and its shareholders by Bharti Airtel are converted into local shares with voting rights.

Sodhi observed that a department of SEBI had only issued an informal guidance to Bharti Airtel on June 22, which was not binding on its Board.

As per regulations, SAT can only overturn orders passed by SEBI.

Monsoon may be the worst since 1972

New Delhi: India's poor monsoon rains will improve slightly in their final month but will still end the June-September season about 20 percent below normal, a top official said, making this year's rainfall the worst since 1972.

Weak and uneven monsoon rains have ravaged India's rice crop and hit the sugarcane, soybean and groundnut crops as well as disrupting the flow of water into the main reservoirs, which are vital for hydropower generation and winter irrigation.

"We expect at least 4-5 percent improvement in the seasonal rainfall deficit for the entire season from the current level," Ajit Tyagi, director general of the India Meteorological Department, told Reuters on Friday.

India last suffered a monsoon failure in 2002, when rainfall was 19.2 percent below average through the season, and July rains were 54.2 percent below normal. India's crop output in 2002/03 fell 18 percent.

This year, June rainfall was the worst in over 80 years, while July saw a 5 percent deficit. August began with an exceptionally dry two weeks, followed by near-normal rains in the later part of the month.

From the start of June to Aug. 26, rains were 25 percent below normal, data showed on Thursday.

"In 2002, the seasonal rainfall deficit was 19 percent. The only difference is that this year's July rainfall was relatively better than 2002," Tyagi said.

It's official, India in Nehru Cup final under AFC rules

New Delhi: Defending champions India will take on Syria in the final of Nehru Cup international football tournament in New Delhi irrespective of the results of their last round-robin fixture against the West Asians on Saturday and Friday's match between Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan.

India may still get more than six points if they either draw or beat Syria tomorrow but even if they lose by whatever goal margin they will make it to the final for the second consecutive time.

If Sri Lanka beat Kyrgyzstan by a huge goal margin today they will get six points -- the same as India -- but the island country cannot make it to the final as they had lost to the home team 1-3 in their last round-robin match on Wednesday.

According to the AFC rules, head-on result comes first before goal difference while deciding which team goes to next stage after league engagements.

So the final on August 31 will be repeat of 2007 summit clash between India and Syria.

All India Football Federation General Secretary Alberto Colaco cleared the confusion and said India are already through to the final irrespective of the last two league matches. "India and Syria have now qualified for the final now. Under AFC rules, if two teams get same points after league engagements which team advances to the next stage is decided first by looking into the maximum points between or among contending teams (those who have same points)," Colaco said on Friday.

If the matter is not resolved there the goal difference comes into play," he said.

Pak still optimistic about hosting 2011 World Cup

Karachi: Even after giving up their claim to host the 2011 World Cup matches, Pakistan Cricket Board claimed on Friday that the strife-torn country may still get to host some games if the security situation improves in the next few months.

"We can ask the ICC to send a security delegation to review the security situation in Pakistan and if the situation has improved we can end up still hosting some of our matches at home," Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ejaz Butt said.

Butt, however, made it clear that the final decision would be with the ICC and the hosting of matches would depend on teams willing to tour Pakistan.

"But we are hopeful because already the security situation is improving in Pakistan and it will hopefully get better in next five to six months," he said on Friday.

Pakistan was stripped of its share of 14 World Cup matches by the ICC board in April after the Sri Lankan cricket team came under a terrorist attack in Lahore in which six policemen were killed and six players were injured.

Pakistan mounted a legal challenge against the ICC to get back the hosting rights and a final settlement was negotiated yesterday after talks between Butt and ICC President David Morgan.

Under the settlement, Butt said Pakistan now has to withdraw all its legal petitions against the ICC in 15 days including the one over the shifting of the World Cup secretariat from Lahore to Mumbai.

"We are in return guaranteed that we will retain hosting rights of our matches which will, however, be held in the other World Cup host countries. But we will paid around 1500 million rupees as compensation by the ICC including the hosting fees for the matches," Butt said.

Interpol issues Red Corner Notice against Abu Hamza

NEW DELHI: Interpol on Wednesday issued Red Corner Notice against a Lashker-e-Taiba terrorist wanted in connection with Mumbai terror strikes in November last year.

The Interpol issued notice against Abu Hamza, accused of motivating and training the 10 terrorists sent to Mumbai for carrying out the terror strike.

Ajmal Iman Kasab, the lone arrested terrorist in the attack, had revealed the names of his Pakistani handlers, including Abu Hamza, Abu Jindal, Abu Qama and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, who saw them off when they boarded a ship at Karachi.

Hamza had advised them on how to go about the terror attacks, how to place bomb in a taxi and how the 10-member terrorist team should go about their mission.

The Interpol had last night issued Red Corner Notices against Lashkar-e-Taiba founder chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and mastermind of Mumbai terror strike Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.

The Red Corner notice was issued against Saeed (59) and Lakhvi (48) after a Mumbai court issued a non-bailable warrant against the two for their role in the attacks in the country's financial hub. Saeed was earlier on the United Nations Global Watch list.

CBI spokesman said Blue Corner notices were issued against 19 people including Col R Sadat Ullah, believed to be a Pakistani army personnel.

Through this, India has sought additional information about their identity or activities in relation to a crime from Interpol Member countries.

Salman Khan may buy IPL franchise

MUMBAI: Bollywood action hero Salman Khan is the latest cine star to join the Indian Premier League (IPL) gravy train and has expressed interest Salman Khan in buying a team.

Salman met IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi on Wednesday and was briefed about the nitty-grittes of buying an IPL franchise.

The fourth season of the IPL in 2011 will see two new teams and they would be up for grabs through a bidding process later this year.

Modi said Salman is interested in buying an IPL team.

"He has been interested to buy a team for quite some time," Modi added.

"Today we had a brief meeting and I explained him how to go about with the task. I can assure you that Salman is not the only star who is thinking to buy a team. I have had around 28 queries and the list will surely go up," he said.

IPL vice-president Niranjan Shah said that Salman is a serious buyer and will bid for one of the two new teams.

"Salman is a serious buyer and is contemplating to buy an IPL team. He came along with couple of his friends and was briefed by Lalit on the procedure to buy IPL franchise," said Shah.

Shah went on to add that cities like Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Vishakhaptanam are in fray to be the hometown for new teams.

"It will be an open tender process and the city that gets the highest bidder will be the new IPL team," he said.

IPL franchise in the 2011 season may cost over $200-300 million.

Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla are the co-owners of Kolkata Knight Riders while Preity Zinta is also a joint owner of Kings XI Punjab. Shilpa Shetty and her boyfriend Raj Kundra also bought some stakes in Rajasthan Royals.

Sources also indicated that Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Mohanlal and Priyadarshan were also interested in owning IPL teams.

Tenders for the new teams will be out in November-December 2009 and bidding will be done by January 2010.

India disappointed over latest Pak claim on Indian dossier

New Delhi:India expressed disappointment over Pakistan's continued claim that it was not being given evidence about involvement of Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed in Mumbai terror attacks and said the material given to Islamabad was "more than enough" to arrest him.

"I was disappointed when I heard him (Pakistan's Interior Minister Rahman Malik) say that evidence was still not being presented to Pakistan and what is worse when he said we (Islamabad) are not responsible if something happens in the future," Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters in New Delhi.

He said if Pakistan government consulted any lawyer, he would advise them that "the evidence given in the series of dossiers is more than enough to arrest Hafiz Saeed, for example, to set up Special Investigation Team, and if they follow all the leads given in these dossiers and bring charges against him."

Chidambaram termed as "not very encouraging" the comments made by Malik.

"I am very surprised," he said adding "such statement is not at all expected from such a responsible minister of a government which is being forced to concede that the attack was planned in Pakistan soil and executed by Pakistani citizens."

Chidambaram said "we will also share as I believe we have shared the last dossier with the countries, whose nationals were killed in Mumbai, last time and we will urge them to build pressure on Pakistan."

"The last dossier which was handed over to Pakistan a few days ago has been shared with about 15 or 16 countries," the Minister said.

Jaswant attacks BJP, compares it to Ku Klux Klan

New Delhi:Jaswant Singh on Wednesday took his attack on BJP a step further by likening it to the violent white American group Ku Klux Klan (KKK) and suggested that L K Advani was surrounded by a coterie. Why had he been unceremoniously expelled from the party a week ago, the former External Affairs Minister was asked.

"Please don't ask me. I am outside the magic circle of advisers or thinkers. Because, I am not from the RSS, is that why? So are we a political party? Is the BJP becoming some kind of an Indian version of Ku Klux Klan?" he shot back during an interview to PTI here. KKK, widely known as The Klan, is the name of several past and present hate group organisations in the US, whose aim was to protect and further the rights of white Americans by intimidation.

Asked what he meant by reference to KKK, he said, "You know what the Klan means. You don't ask me about this." Expressing reluctance to analyse why Advani was rejected by the people for the post of Prime Minister, Singh nevertheless said it was for the BJP veteran to reflect on this.

"It would be impertinent and perhaps, to a degree also, I would be commenting on my past 30 years with him if I commented on his characteristics, political or personal," he said.

Asked if Advani was surrounded by a coterie, Singh countered, "Does he run a coterie or does the coterie run him."

Singh, who did not share a warm relationship with the Sangh, said the BJP should reflect on its relationship with the RSS and be "mature enough to cut the umbilical cord".

AI asks employees to accept salary cuts

New Delhi: Faced with a grim scenario, Air India management has asked its employees to consider the financial crisis facing the company and accept proposals to cut wages and other costs in order to avoid job losses.

The views were expressed by Air India CMD Arvind Jadhav at his meetings with leaders of 14 unions till late Tuesday night, where he is understood to have articulated various scenarios which could arise if costs were not managed well.

Airline officials said Jadhav also told the union leaders that if the losses continued, the company would have to prune its operations which could lead to lay-offs and retrenchments.

However, the officials categorically denied any move for a lockout or referring the company to the Board for Industrial Finance and Reconstruction, saying at no stage of these discussions were any such references made.

While the airline management announced timely payment of salaries to its employees, it said determined efforts would be made to overcome the liquidity crunch and cut down costs, particularly in areas like rentals for leased aircraft, jet fuel, navigation charges and interest payments on fleet renewal.

Jet fuel costs amount to almost 40 per cent of the total operational costs of the carrier, which is followed by expenses on salaries, wages and various allowances including productivity-linked incentives.

It is understood that during the talks, the airline management proposed to merge PLI with the basic pay of various section of employees and match them with the scales and allowances recommended by the Sixth Pay Commission and in accordance with the Department of Public Enterprises guidelines.

Dravid foresees Test no. 1 spot changing hands more often

LONDON: The one-team domination in Test cricket has ended with Australia's decline, feels veteran Indian batsman Rahul Dravid, who foresees the number one spot changing hands every few months between India, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

"I don't think you'll see one team dominating like Australia did, at least not in the immediate future," Dravid said.

"There are three or four teams that are evenly matched and you could see the number one spot change hands a few times in the next couple of years," the 36-year-old, who makes a comeback to the Indian One-day side after two years, added.

Asked whether India would also face the transitional crisis that the Australians are battling once the likes of Sachin Tendulkar retire, Dravid said it would boil down to how well the Indian pace bowling attack shapes up.

"We've got a great blend of experienced cricketers, and promising talent coming through. We've done really well over the past couple of years and if we can keep a core group of fast bowlers fit enough to support the spinners then we have as good a chance as anyone," he told 'The Guardian'.

"When Australia dominated, it was the bowling of (Glenn) McGrath and (Shane) Warne that was the key and I believe that England won Ashes series because they had the more balanced bowling attack. We certainly have that balance, and so do Sri Lanka and South Africa. I think the bowling strength will determine which team gets to top," he added.

On his assessment of the Ashes that England won 2-1, Dravid said the series never looked one-sided and could have gone either way.

"I always expected it to be close, and it was. But England won the moments that mattered, and over the course of the five Tests, I'd say that they just about edged it," he said.

Sri Lanka makes solid start on Vettori's big day

Colombo: New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori became only the eighth player in history to achieve the double of 3,000 runs and 300 wickets as Sri Lanka made a steady start in the second cricket Test on Wednesday.

The left-arm spinner, who has scored 3,329 runs, claimed his 300th wicket when he dismissed his Sri Lankan counterpart Kumar Sangakkara in the afternoon session of the first day's play.

Sangakkara, former captain Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera scored half-centuries as Sri Lanka went to stumps at 262-3 on a firm wicket that Vettori said "looked like a road" at the toss.

Jayawardene was unbeaten on 79 and Samaraweera was on 78, having shared a fourth-wicket stand of 147 after tight bowling by the Black Caps had kept the Sri Lankans on a tight leash.

When play began 30 minutes late due to a wet outfield, Sri Lanka plodded to 146-3 by tea before Jayawardene and Samaraweera caned the second new ball in the final session to boost the total.

Vettori, 30, joined a select band of all-rounders that includes Kapil Dev of India, Ian Botham of England, Richard Hadlee of New Zealand, Imran Khan of Pakistan, Shane Warne of Australia, Shaun Pollock of South Africa and Sri Lankan Chaminda Vaas.

Vettori is already the most successful left-arm spinner in history, having surpassed Englishman Derek Underwood's tally of 297 wickets in the first Test in Galle last week.

Vettori, who began the match with 298 wickets, had left-handed opener Tharanga Paranavitana (19) edging his second delivery to Ross Taylor in the slips.

Indian boxers hope to break World Championship duck

NEW DELHI: Hoping to end their medal drought and impress franchisees of next year's World Series of Boxing, an eight-member Indian contingent leaves Wednesday night for the 15th World Championships scheduled from September 1-12 in Milan, Italy.

Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh and assistant coach Jaidev Bisht stayed back and would leave on the night of August 29 after receiving the Khel Ratna and the Dronacharya award respectively from the President.

"The World Championships is going to be tougher than the Olympics. But this is as strong a team as can be prepared and hopefully it would deliver," said chief Gurbax Singh Sandhu ahead of the team's departure.

Indian Boxing Federation Secretary General P K Muralidharan Raja said the other motivation for the Indian pugilists would be the presence of World Series of Boxing (WSB) franchisees.

"WSB franchisees will also be there to pick their boxers and hopefully our boys would be able to impress them," Raja said.

India has never won a medal at the event with the best being quarterfinal appearances by the likes of Olympian A L Lakra, who was the only one to make the last-eight stage in the previous edition of the championships in Chicago a couple of years ago.

"The expectations are going to be sky high after the way Indian boxers have performed in the past two years, especially the Beijing Olympics," admitted Vijender, who goes into the tournament as world number two.

"The pressure would be there but we can cope with it," he added.

Akhil Kumar, who missed the event in 2007 is all set for his official debut in the featherweight (57kg) division but far from being nervous, he exuded confidence of making a mark.

"I am completely fit and though it would be the first time I compete in the feather weight division, I am sure that I can do well," he said.

The championships feature 750 pugilists and it would take at least four bouts before a boxer gets to the medal round.

"It is going to be really tough. Three rounds of three minutes each which tests endurance, add to this the European scoring system, in which judges don't give points unless the punch is hard enough to cause a thud. It will be quite a challenge," Akhil said.

18-year-old T Nanao Singh, a world youth champion, who won a silver medal in his very first senior event -- the Asian Championships in China -- is confident that he would end India's medal drought at the event.

"I have won a medal in every international competition that I have competed in and I am sure I can keep the record intact," he said.

Under terror threats, govt to monitor phone calls, internet

New Delhi: The government, in the wake terror threats, is planning to set up a centralised system to monitor communications on mobile phones, landlines and the internet.

The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT), a telecom research and development organisation, is working on the Telecom Security project, which will help the government to monitor both calls in the country through a centralised system.

Talking about the project, C-DoT Executive Director P V Acharya said: "It is viewed as a national project ... Basically, it is about monitoring certain messages or conversations so that we can ensure security of the country.

Essentially, our technology would provide an interface to operator of any service or technology and it will give them access to the messages traversing through their network," he said.

The present system of surveillance is managed by individual operators, and a phone is tapped and call details are given when law enforcement agencies ask for them.

The government has a Signal Intelligence Agency, a joint service organisation manned by personnel from the Army, Navy and Air Force, which monitors military links (wireless) of other countries.

However, it does not have a centralised monitoring system for voice calls on the mobile, landlines and internet.

The government has not yet decided on how the surveillance system will work.

"We will just provide an opportunity to this ... but how this would be done depends on the agreement between the operators and the government," Acharya said.

Declining to share technical details of the project, Acharya said the first phase of the project would cost Rs 400 crore. It will end next year.

Govt will talk to Swiss banks on disclosing details: Pranab

NEW DELHI: Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said the government will look into the rejection by Swiss banks to hand over details of their Indian clients.

Speaking to newsmen before entering his North Block office Mukherjee said, "What can I comment? I will look into the matter and discuss the Swiss banks’ rejection to disclose details with authorities in banking sector."

This reaction from the finance minister comes after Swiss banks declined India's request to unearth its black money parked in their banks. India has also been told not to come on 'fishing expeditions'.

Swiss bank authorities rejected India's request to disclose details of clients, saying Swiss law and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Model Tax Convention do not permit fishing expeditions.

The Swiss authorities added that they would not co-operate in the indiscriminate trawling through bank accounts in the hope of finding something interesting.

"This means that India cannot simply throw its telephone book at Switzerland and ask if any of these people have a bank account here," a top Swiss bankers’ association official said.

According to sources the Swiss bank-client confidentiality has never been 100 percent absolute and Swiss legislators have built in provisions for it to be lifted during criminal investigations and also in many civil cases and it has also evolved over time.

"The key for the exchange of information in tax matters is the Double Taxation Agreement between Switzerland and India," said SBA's Head of International Communications James Nason.

Double Taxation Agreements are being currently revised to incorporate the OECD standard on the exchange of information in tax matters according to the OECD's own Model Tax Convention.

Pay row: IIT-Bombay professors on mass leave

MUMBAI: Over 200 professors of IIT-Bombay on Monday went on mass leave demanding pay parity with government scientists.

"IIT professors are loosing Rs 23 lakh in their career compared with the government scientists and other officials of similar rank," Somya Mukherjee, Secretary of Faculty Forum IIT-B, said.

The salary hike demand is also to attract faculties to join IITs, he said, adding the government has announced setting up of eight new IITs across the country and 8,000 professors are needed for that.

"Our job in IIT is teaching and research unlike other universities, where research is secondary. So, we are demanding honour and prestige for our work," Mukherjee said.

He also condemned the Gowardhan Mehta report submitted to the government in February this year, saying some of its recommendations are not favouarable to professors.

"The report has suggested that IIT professor should have work experience of three years after PhD. However, it is very unlikely that after getting job, people may come here," he said.

No immediate decision to allow foreign lawyers in India

New Delhi: India ruled out any immediate decision to allow foreign lawyers to work here in view of the reservations of the domestic legal fraternity.

The Indian position was conveyed by Law Minister M Veerappa Moily to British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Justice Lord William Bach during their meeting.

Pressing for allowLaw Minister M Veerappa Moily ing foreign lawyers to operate, Bach said they may not be given the right to appear in Indian courts but should be given permission to at least advice their Indian counterparts, especially in commercial cases, sources said.

Moily told Bach that any decision could not be taken on the issue as Indian lawyers should feel confident on the issue.

He said Indian law firms were apprehensive over entry of foreign law firms in the country and education on the issue was required before the Government could think further, sources added.

Britain and several other countries have been seeking permission for foreign lawyers to operate in India but the legal fraternity here has been opposing it, apprehending that it would hurt their interests.

RIL wants ADAG’s malicious ads stopped

New Delhi: Reliance Industries hit back at the Anil Ambani group for unleashing a "malicious, mischievous, baseless and ill-informed" propaganda against its gas field costs and said the campaign by people with little experience of large projects should be nipped in the bud.

RIL said capital expenditure for KG-D6 fields increased from USD 2.47 billion in 2003 to USD 8.83 billion due to a 2.5 times increase in reserves, trebling of production facilities, doubling of peak production, hike in number of wells, field life and inflation in equipment and services industry.

Its President and CEO (Petroleum) PMS Prasad on August 20 wrote to Oil Secretary R S Pandey, saying "certain parties are bent upon holding the country's price and national interest hostage to their own narrow commercial interests and are stopping at nothing to destroy the reputation of the country."

"It is necessary to nip these malafide endeavours in the bud for the sake of the energy security of the country," wrote Prasad and was a day later appointed to the board of RIL.

Without naming ADAG, he said the "unprovoked and unjustified attack on the credibility of the project" was being carried out by "vested interests having little understanding of any mega project execution, leave alone complex deepwater projects."

Comparing with similar deepwater projects by world's top energy majors, Prasad said KG-D6's finding and development cost of less than USD 5 per barrel of oil equivalent was among the lowest in the world.

Marketmen said apart from firming global markets, reports that DLF Ltd bagged a 350-acre plot for Rs 1,750 crore in Haryana for developing a recreation and leisure project, making it one of the costliest land deals in recent times, triggered buying activity in realty stocks.

Sentiments also buoyed on reports that the US Federal Reserve chief said the global economy is "beginning to emerge" from recession and unexpected good home sales data for July.

"Realty stocks were frontrunners in today's trading on the bourses on favourable corporate reports and firming trend in global markets," a Delhi-based stock broker said.

Realty major DLF closed 3.15 per cent higher at Rs 394.25. The country's second largest realty player, Unitech, closed up 5.71 per cent at Rs 90.65. Ansal Infrastructure surged 7.86 per cent to Rs 70.

Sobha Developers surged by 11.21 per cent to Rs 243.15, Omaxe Ltd by 5.12 per cent to Rs 110.90, and Parsvnath by 4.09 per cent to Rs 118.25.

The benchmark Sensex surged by 387.92 points, or 2.55 per cent, to close at 15,628.75 points.

Minister says Air India needs bailout

NEW DELHI: Air India needs a bailout of nearly 620 million dollars to keep flying, a minister said in remarks published on Monday, in which he added he was certain the loss-making airline would survive.

The flagship airline, which posted a 1.03-billion-dollar loss for the fiscal year ended March 31, and other Indian carriers have been hit by overcapacity in the industry and a sharp drop in passengers due to the economic slowdown.

"The airline will survive. Every time it was in trouble the problems were rolled over, and we will roll over this time also," civil aviation minister Praful Patel told a newpaper.

Patel said he did not want the government to have to bail out the state-run carrier but added that "we have to do certain things as shareholders" of the airline.

"Air India should be sold, but I've been asked to keep it going," he told the newspaper.

"The airline needs a 30 billion rupee (618.6 million dollar) equity infusion and the conversion of high-cost debt to low-cost debt to keep it going," Patel added.

The airline has been seeking financial aid from the government along with soft loans to remain afloat.

A decision by Patel to allow more private carriers to fly in India's skies has undercut the airline's competitive position and has led to criticism from trade unions that he has endangered the airline's survival.

Patel said his decision was to promote the overall growth of the aviation industry.

"Do not see me as a minister for Air India," he told the newspaper.

Patel added that he supported demands by airlines for a cut in state taxes -- which range up to 30 percent on aviation fuel -- that many carriers have blamed for heavy losses.

"I want this reduced for both low-cost and full-service carriers," he said. "I have always advocated a uniform tax on jet fuel."

In a bid to cut costs Air India recently announced it would halve productivity-linked incentive payments for its 31,000 employees and also slash crew flying allowances by 50 percent.

The moves are part of a turnaround programme announced by the carrier that also includes moves to attract more budget customers and plans to rationalise its fleet and network.

Can win tri-series even without Zaheer, Sehwag: Harbhajan

New Delhi: India will sorely miss Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan in next month's tri-series in Sri Lanka but the presence of match-winners and the balance of the team still make them the tournament favourite, said Harbhajan Singh.

Talking to reporters after unveiling the Compaq Cup 2009, which will be given to the winner of the tri-series also featuring New Zealand, Harbhajan conceded it would not be easy to replace players like Sehwag and Zaheer but felt the team could still pull it off.

"Sehwag is a key player. Any team in the world would miss a player like him. But now that he would not be playing, we would have to do well without him," Harbhajan said. He said the return of veterans Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid would offset Sehwag's loss.

"We are a strong team and it's a balanced side. Besides, we have a number of match-winning players in the ranks. We have the youngsters and then you have experienced players like Dravid, Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh. If we play to our potential, we would return with this lovely trophy," he said after unveiling world's first digital sports trophy.

Like Sehwag, Zaheer too underwent a shoulder surgery which ruled him out of the tri-series and the subsequent Champions Trophy but Harbhajan seemed to have enough trust on other pacers to pull it off.

"Zaheer is such an experience bowler and it's unfortunate that he would not be playing. We are going to miss him," Harbhajan said. "However, Ashish Nehra, RP Singh, Praveen Kumar and Ishant Sharma have been doing well and they will have to step up to the plate and deliver," he said.

ASHES URN RETURNS HOME

London: England regained the Ashes beating Australia by 197 runs on Sunday to take the five-match series 2-1.

Michael Hussey was the last man out after tea at The Oval, caught for 121 by Alastair Cook off Graeme Swann as Australia were dismissed for 348 on the fourth day of the fifth Test, falling well short of the 546 target set by England. Swann claimed 4/120 and Steve Harmison picked up 3/54 but it were two run outs in six balls — including that of captain Ricky Ponting — that put England on way to victory and sent all-rounder Andrew Flintoff into Test retirement as a winner.

The defeat also meant that Ponting became only the second Australia captain in 132 years of Ashes history to lose two consecutive series on England soil. The other was Australia’s first touring captain Billy Murdoch a century ago. Murdoch lost his second series in 1890.

Australia were always behind once they replied to England's first innings 332 with a below-par 160. The tourists would also regret not being able to win the first Test in Cardiff when they failed to take England's final wicket.

Hussey scored his first Test century since last October but his 330-minute fighting effort that may have saved his Test career was in a losing cause.

There had been periods throughout the day when it looked like Australia might achieve a spectacular rearguard action to stave off defeat or even claim an unlikely win. Hussey, who survived two drops by Paul Collingwood at slip to Swann on 21 and 55, put on 127 with Ponting and 91 with Haddin, but neither were significant enough to deny England.
