Australia promises action, says attacks on Indians a 'problem'

Melbourne, May 31: Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has termed the attacks on Indian students a "problem" and assured that the government would do everything to prevent further assaults.

"We have a particular current problem with Indian students," Smith told Network Ten.

"We're doing everything that we can, both with the Indian community in Australia and India itself ... but also working very closely with the relevant state authorities," he said.

Smith's comments came amid outrage and concern in India at the wave of allegedly racist attacks on Indian students, the Sydney Herald reported.

The issue has been discussed at the diplomatic level with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh speaking to his Australian counterpart Kevin Rudd and urging him to take all possible steps to ensure the security of Indians in Australia.

The Australian government has assured India that a slew of steps, including increased patrolling and setting up of a hotline, have been taken to ensure the safety of over 80,000 Indian students in the country.

Smith said Australia was trying to bring the attackers to justice and ensure a safe environment for all international students.

"Australia generally has low crime and violence rates," he said.

Four attacks have taken place on Indian students. While a petrol bomb was thrown at an Indian student in Sydney last Sunday, three attacks took place in Melbourne.

One student, Sravan Kumar Theerthala, who was attacked in Melbourne last Sunday with a screwdriver, is battling for life at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Another student Baljinder Singh was stabbed outside a railway station. He is recuperating at home. A third student, Sourabh Sharma, was viciously assaulted in a train May 9.

Indian students take out rally in Australia against racial attacks

MELBOURNE:
Shaken by a wave of racial assaults, thousands of Indian students chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' on Sunday rallied here demanding Indians protest justice for victims of recent attacks as Australia scrambled to contain the rising anger and frustration within the community.

The 'peace rally' organized by bodies like Federation of Indian Students in Australia (FISA) and National Union of Students kicked off from outside the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where 25-year-old Shravan Kumar is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit after being stabbed by a screwdriver by a group of teens on Sunday last.

The marchers numbering over 5,000 walked down to the Victorian Parliament House on Spring street, holding placards with slogans like 'We want Justice', 'We are the Economy Builders' and 'End Racist Attacks'. They also chanted 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'.

"We want justice for the victims of racist violence," demanded the students, who also displayed placards carrying messages like 'Save our Students' and 'Stop Racist Violence'.

Police were present in strength to maintain law and order as the rally led to traffic diversion at the Spring Street, which was completely blocked by the demonstrators who hoped to meet the Victorian Parliamentarians to put forward their demands.

Reacting to the students' rally, Indian Consul General in Melbourne, Anita Nayar, described it as freedom of expression.

"Australia is a democratic country and it (this rally) is freedom of expression," she said. However, she hoped that that event remained peaceful and did not turn ugly.

Television footage of Kumar fighting for life in the hospital sent shock waves among the 95,000-strong Indian student community in Australia, which is home to over 4 lakh international students.

FISA had said on Saturday that the rally was being organized in response to the growing anger in the Indian community against increasing hate crimes.

"The purpose is to create an awareness about an increasing number of hate crimes within the state (of Victoria) and to promote racial harmony and peace," FISA had said in a statement.

Another Indian student, Baljinder Singh, stabbed by two attackers recently, has been discharged from hospital while Rajesh Kumar, who suffered 30 per cent burns after a petrol bomb was hurled at him in his home, was being treated in a Sydney hospital.

Insisting that Australia is not a racist country, John McCarthy, its High Commissioner in New Delhi, said "we should cooperate to ensure that incidents of atrocities don't occur."

"We should ensure Indian students are well-informed about Australia which is generally a very safe country. We are proud of our record as a multi-cultural country," he said.

Meira Kumar meets Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi:Union Minister Meira Kumar met Congress President Sonia Gandhi here on Sunday amid indications from the party that she was the front-runner for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. The Minister for Water Resources, who is considered as Congress's Dalit face met Gandhi at 10 Janpath, a day after she emerged as the top contender for the post at a meeting of senior party leaders. The meeting included Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Kumar, 64, daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram, is an MP from Bihar's Sasaram constituency and would be the first woman to hold the office of Lok Sabha Speaker, if selected.

Details of what transpired in the meeting between Kumar and Sonia were yet to be known. Kumar, a five-time MP, came as a surprise choice as the name of veteran Congressman from Andhra Pradesh Kishore Chandra Deo was doing the rounds in the media for the last fortnight as the party's choice for the Speaker's post.

At the meeting on Saturday, the race appeared to have narrowed down to Kumar and former Union Minister Girija Vyas, sources said.

The post of Deputy Leader has been offered to BJP with the Prime Minister himself calling up senior BJP leader L K Advani to make the proposal, a convention that has been followed for a couple of decades.

Pakistan battles Taliban; Swat offensive 'to end in two-three days'

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani forces battled militants in South Waziristan on the Afghan border on Sunday as a government official said an offensive in the Swat valley could be over in two or three days.

Pakistani forces have undertaken their most concerted offensive against an expanding Taliban insurgency that has raised fears for the nuclear-armed US ally's stability and the safety of its nuclear arsenal.

The focus of the fighting has been the former tourist destination of Swat, 120 km (80 miles) northwest of Islamabad, which the Taliban virtually took as the government alternated between inconclusive military action and peace pacts.

But tension has also been rising in South Waziristan, an al-Qaida and Taliban stronghold, with military officials saying an offensive was likely there after Swat is secured.

The United States and the Afghan government have long been pressing Pakistan to root militants out of South Waziristan and other enclaves on the Afghan border, from where the Taliban direct their Afghan war.

Militants attacked a paramilitary force camp in Jandola, 80 km (50 miles) east of Wana, the main town in South Waziristan, late on Saturday, security officials said.

"Militants came in force and attacked a paramilitary camp and fighting lasted for eight hours. At least 40 militants were killed while four soldiers died," said an intelligence official in the region who declined to be identified.

A military spokesman said the militants had been pushed back after a heavy exchange of fire. Up to 15 militants and three soldiers were killed, he said.

There was no independent confirmation of the casualty estimates.

Militant violence in Pakistan has surged since mid-2007, with attacks on the security forces, as well as on government and Western targets.

There have been eight bomb attacks in various towns and cities since the offensive in Swat and neighbouring districts began in late April and the Taliban have threatened more.

EXODUS
The offensive in Swat has sparked an exodus of about 2.4 million people, according to government figures, and the country faces a long-term humanitarian crisis.

Bomb attacks in cities and the plight of the displaced could undermine public support for the offensive but for now, analysts say, the authorities are determined to defeat the Taliban in Swat.

The army said on Saturday it had regained full control of Mingora, the main town in Swat, and a top defence ministry official said on Sunday the military operation could be over in a two or three days.

"Only five to 10% of the job is remaining and hopefully within two to three days, the pockets of resistance will be cleared," Syed Athar Ali, secretary of defence for Pakistan, said at a regional defence meeting in Singapore. Military spokesman have been cautious about predicting how long the offensive would last, saying there was still resistance in the valley.

"It's very difficult to give a timeline," said chief military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas. "It's a very big area so nobody's in a position to give any timeline for the operation."

On Sunday, the military urged civilians to leave the town of Charbagh, about 15 km (10 miles) north of Mingora, and lifted a curfew there and in Mingora to allow people to get out.

Pakistan is vital for U.S. plans to defeat al-Qaida and cut support for the Afghan Taliban.

The United States, which is sending thousands of reinforcements into Afghanistan, has been heartened by the offensive in Swat.

Pictorial warnings on tobacco products from today

NEW DELHI: All tobacco products will have to carry compulsory pictorial warnings on their packs from today highlighting the health hazards of its consumption, a long- awaited step aimed at cutting down on the killer habit.

The government order in this regard has come despite stiff resistance from tobacco manufacturers.

The products will have to clearly display a "scorpion" and "lungs" as pictorial warnings. The picture should cover at least 40% of the principal display area of the pack.

The products cannot carry any message that directly or indirectly promotes a specific tobacco brand or tobacco usage in general, the health ministry had said earlier this month.

The government had in August last year asked the manufacturers of cigarette, bidi and gutka products to display a skull-and-bone sign and a warning saying "tobacco smoking kills" on the packets so as to sensitize the public against smoking and consuming these items.

However, it could not be implemented at that time. Then the government fixed December one as the deadline.

According to WHO estimates, 65% of men in India consume tobacco, with 22% chewing and 8% smoking as well as chewing. There has been an increase in the consumption of tobacco among women, with about 3% smoking 'bidis' or cigarettes and 22% chewing tobacco.

Indian Business news

Worst seems to be over for India Inc

New Delhi:India Inc has regained the much-needed business confidence with majority of 300 companies stating, in an industry survey, that they see better economic outlook in the next six months.

As many as 57 per cent of the companies measured on the quarterly Business Confidence Index (BCI) of FICCI, indicated that they expect the overall economic condition to be 'moderately to substantially' better in the next six months.

The FICCI survey of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008-09 is in sharp contrast with findings of the BCI of the previous quarter when only nine per cent firms had seen a bright outlook.

"The economy has bottomed out as was also indicated in the last survey and is clearly in the recovery mode," FICCI said.

The Gross Domestic Production (GDP) recorded in the last fiscal was 6.7 per cent, which was better-than-expected.

Improvement in business confidence comes amidst the new UPA Government working on a 100-day programme for putting the economy back on the fast track.

The BCI for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008-09 was up to 64.1 from 44 in the last quarter.

'Govt not to turn a blind eye to Satyam layoffs'

New Delhi:The Government on Sunday said it will not turn a "blind eye" to the issue of layoffs in scam-tainted Satyam Computer, which has now been acquired by Mahindra and Mahindra group firm Tech Mahindra.

"Layoffs -- this is something we are not going to turn a blind eye to as we have a relevant presence in decision making," New Minister for Corporate Affairs Salman Khursheed said.

He was responding to queries on the comments by Tech Mahindra CEO Vineet Nayyar that there are 10,000 surplus people in the Hyderabad-based IT firm. Later there were reports that Satyam was planning to lay off about 8,000 non-billable (non-II) staff working in departments like marketing, HR and administration. Emphasising that his ministry will liaise with the company on this issue, Khursheed said, "We will not allow the company to be taken for a ride ... Our opinion and advice (are) important till Satyam reaches a Sundaram stage (till everything improves)."

Coining the strategy for the IT company as "Satyam, Shivam and Sundaram", the Minister said Satyam is passing through the Shivam stage, necessitating hard decisions. "At the Shivam stage, some hard steps ... will be taken for rebuilding the confidence...we will try to be as sensitive as possible. We would certainly coordinate on that (layoffs)," the Minister said.

When asked if the Satyam case was the tip of the iceberg and there could be more corporate frauds, Khursheed said, "I would call it a symptom of something wrong in the system. You need to treat the system, the root ... otherwise the symptom may reappear. If I call it a tip, it means I am saying there is an iceberg."

The third centre will be set up over the next three quarters and the shortlisted cities are Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad, he added.

Hiddink savours dream end to Chelsea reign

London:Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink admitted winning Saturday's FA Cup final against Everton was the perfect way to end his brief tenure at Stamford Bridge. Blues boss Hiddink will resume his role as Russia coach on a full-time basis in June and the Dutchman was granted a farewell to remember at Wembley thanks to Frank Lampard's second-half winner.

Chelsea's players presented Hiddink with an engraved watch and a signed shirt as a thank-you for his revitalizing four-month spell in charge, but the only gift both the manager and his players really wanted was the cup.

After Louis Saha's stunning goal just 25 seconds into the match, Chelsea showed the calmness that Hiddink demands of his players and equalised through Didier Drogba before Lampard hit the long-range strike that sealed a 2-1 win. Although he has enjoyed European Cup-winning success with PSV Eindhoven, as well as impressive World Cup campaigns with Australia and South Korea, Hiddink hailed the victory as one of his finest.

"It was one of the biggest achievements of my career, winning in the Mecca of world football, the FA Cup is something you cannot believe," Hiddink said. "We were very tough and the team has showed after a setback they react always, which is what I like.

"I loved it so much, I enjoyed it so much working with big stars but they knew what it's all about. They showed in the Premier League and Champions League and here, a lot of character," said Hiddink. When Hiddink replaced Luiz Felipe Scolari in February, Chelsea were a squad in danger of stagnating, but he led them to the Champions League semi-finals, third place in Premier League and now their first piece of silverware for two years. He admitted it had been quite an experience to work with so many talented and determined players. "We have worked so hard since February and I respect these guys very much," he added.

Djokovic dumped out, Federer battles his way into last 16

Paris:Roger Federer needed four sets to reach the last 16 at the French Open on Saturday, but in the biggest upset of the tournament to date fourth seed Novak Djokovic crashed out.

The Swiss second seed, who came through against home favourite Paul-Henri Mathieu 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, was not at his best but once again he managed to dig himself out of trouble when he needed to. Djokovic was totally out of sorts falling 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 to Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in a Court One shocker. The French started the day with five players in the bottom half of the draw and they ended it with just two, but in best friends Gael Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga they have the players many here believe could end the long, painfull wait for another home winner of the Coupe des Mousquetaires. Monfils had too much firepower for Jurgen Melzer of Austria winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, while Tsonga blasted his way past Belgium's Christophe Rochus 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

Andy Roddick and German veteran Tommy Haas also made it through, both against French opponents, while top South American hope Juan Martin del Potro scored a comfortable 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 win over Igor Andreev of Russia. Federer, who struggled at times in his second round tie against Jose Acasuso of Argentina, again looked below par against the dangerous Mathieu, who pushed Rafael Nadal to the limit here in 2006.

But after dropping the first set, Federer broke serve early in the second and used that as a platform to take control of the match. Mathieu faded badly in the middle of the contest but came battling back in the fourth set which Federer edged after breaking in the seventh game with a magnificent backhand passing shot from out wide. "It was tough conditions and hard to see the ball with the sun going down and that's why I think the rallies were short," he said.

Serena enters last 16, Dementieva crashes out

Paris:Ten-time Grand Slam title winner Serena Williams avoided the Roland Garros trap which claimed sister Venus to reach the French Open last 16 on Saturday. But Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva, the 2004 runner-up, was sent crashing out by Australian 30th seed Samantha Stosur.

Williams, the 2002 champion, survived a worrying health scare early in the third set against Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, when she appeared to struggle with her breathing, to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. Alexsandra Wozniak, the first Canadian woman to make the fourth round, now awaits the second seeded American who is attempting to win a second French Open and ensure all four Grand Slam titles are currently in the Williams family. Williams had struggled to impose herself on her 43rd ranked opponent and the Barcelona left-hander clinched the first set thanks to a crucial break in the fifth game.

But the world number two levelled before enduring her courtside drama just after she had broken to lead 2-1 in the decider.

The Spaniard hit back before Williams raced away to a 5-2 lead. She fluffed her lines when she served for the match in the eighth game, but wrapped up victory in the next. Stosur's 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Dementieva allowed her to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for only the second time in her career, and the first time on the testing clay courts of the French capital. Stosur will now tackle France's Virginie Razzano, who put out Italian veteran Tathiana Garbin 7-5, 7-5, where a victory would make her the first Australian woman to make the quarter-finals here since Jelena Dokic in 2002.

Paes-Dlouhy reach French Open quarter-finals

Paris:Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy edged past the local pair of Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut 7-6 (3) 6-3 to enter the men's doubles quarterfinals at the French Open in Paris on Saturday.

It took the third seeded Indo-Czech pair more than an hour and a half to bury the challenge of their rivals, who fought valiantly.

With this win, Paes and Dlouhy improved on their last year's performance here as they had lost in the pre-quarterfinals.

Both the pairs played an engrossing first set, none conceding an inch.

The first break opportunity came for Paes and Dlouhy as late as in the ninth game but they failed to convert the chance.

In the tie breaker, Paes and Dlouhy raced away to a 5-2 lead and sealed the set comfortably. Unlike the first set, the Indo-Czech combine got numerous chances to break their rivals but squandered three breakpoints in the sixth game.

However they made amends in the eighth game and converted the second chance to go up 5-3 and served out the match in the next game.

They next face the winners of the match between Jaroslav Levinsky/Igor Zelenay and Bruno Soares/Kevin Ullyett.

Venus runs out of steam

Paris:A tortured and tormented Venus Williams whimpered out of the French Open on Friday. After labouring through her first match, surviving a match point in the second, American third seed Williams was finally put out of her misery in the third round when she was tossed out by rising Hungarian Agnes Szavay 6-0 6-4.

Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Dinara Safina made serene progress. Four-time champion Nadal barely broke into a sweat as he overcame potential banana skin Lleyton Hewitt in a 6-1 6-3 6-1 hammering to extend his Paris record to 31-0. The only drama came in the final point when Hewitt was unsure if Nadal had unleashed his seventh ace to win the match. The pockmark on the clay confirmed he had.

Russian Safina set up a last-16 date with France’s Aravane Rezai by thundering past teenage compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 6-0 and holder Ana Ivanovic pulled off an equally emphatic 6-0 6-2 drubbing of Czech Iveta Benesova.

Men’s fourth seed Novak Djokovic wasted little time in finishing off Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3 6-4 6-1 in their interrupted second round match.

Williams barely raised a groan as she was hopelessly outclassed by 29th seed Szavay who never lost belief during the 81-minute encounter. In just 30 minutes, Williams saw the first set vanish before her eyes as she suffered her first love set drubbing since July 2007. On that occasion she rebounded to beat Nadia Petrova in the Fed Cup but there were to be no second chances on Friday.

Don't go to Australia: Indian victim to students

MELBOURNE: After surviving a murderous attack, a 25-year-old Indian student on Saturday appealed to fellow countrymen aspiring to pursue education in Australia that they should not come here.

"My advice to every Indian student now who wants to come to Australia is please don't come and there's no life here," said Baljinder Singh, who was attacked by two youths here recently.

Singh also expressed concern over the condition of another Indian student Shravan Kumar, who was attacked by a screwdriver by a group of teens in a separate incident. Kumar remained "very, very serious," he said.

Kumar is in a state of coma in the intensive Care Unit of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he was visited by Indian High Commissioner Sujata Singh and Consul General in Melbourne Anita Nayar on Thursday.

Singh said one of his friends from Karnal has got a visa to Australia, but he is "very scared" to come here now in the wake of "racial" attacks on Indians.

Recalling the ordeal he faced, Singh said that he went to a train station on Monday night after finishing his work and two knife-wielding boys, aged around 20, approached him.

"I was very scared to see the knives. They asked me if I had any money? I told them to hang on as I looked for my purse in my bag which was very messy... In first five seconds, one of the guys stabbed me in my stomach. I just fell down on the floor," he said.

20 Indians attacked within a month in Sydney

Saturday May 30, 2009, Melbourne:
An Indian community leader has claimed that over 20 incidents of "curry bashing" have taken place in Sydney in the past 30 days, and said there is an urgent need to address the issue as most students are reluctant to lodge any complaint out of fear.

Yadu Singh, the head of a committee that has been formed to address concerns about the welfare of Indian students in Australia, also revealed that more than 100 attacks on Indian youths were feared to have taken place in the last 12 months.

Singh, a Sydney-based cardiologist, said the attacks had grown over the last four years and there was an urgent need to address the issue. "There is a term 'curry bashing' for such incidents and it is used as 'lets go curry bashing'."

"They (the attacks) are not random at all, the people are targeting them. They know these students are easy targets," Singh said.

Indian students often become victims because they travel home late at night, alone, after working to support their studies, he pointed out, adding that they were also not reporting the incidents to police.

Many students were afraid that lodging any sort of formal police report would harm their chances of permanent residency.

"So they will suffer the humiliation and the insult and the criminals think 'We are pretty safe robbing them and nothing will happen'," Singh said.

Referring to the petrol bomb attack on 25-year-old hospitality graduate Rajesh Kumar, who received 30 per cent burns, Singh said "it is a clear case of racial attack as there is no other angle we can apply to this attack."

"Melbourne has a bigger problem, but if we don't do something it will be repeated in Sydney," said Singh. He sought more intensive undercover police effort to capture the offenders.

Lanka civilian deaths should be probed: Amnesty

COLOMBO: Amnesty International on Saturday called for an independent probe into the number of civilians killed in the final weeks of the war against LTTE and also urged the UN to reveal its own estimates.

The call by the rights group followed a report in the Times of London newspaper on Friday citing confidential UN reports that more than 20,000 civilians were killed by Sri Lankan army shelling.

The report followed weeks of allegations that large numbers of civilians had been killed as the army closed in on Tamil Tiger rebels to end the war.

Amnesty's Asia Pacific director Sam Zarifi accused both sides of war crimes and called for an independent international probe.

"The Times report underscores the need for this investigation and the UN should do everything it can to determine the truth about the 'bloodbath' that occurred in northeast Sri Lanka," Zarifi said in statement.

The statement said the UN "must immediately publicise its estimate of the number of civilians killed by the two sides in the final weeks of fighting".

Sri Lanka's Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe dismissed Amnesty's call and said the organisation was being "ridiculous to keep harping on things they cannot substantiate," he said.

The government, which has rejected demands by the UN Human Rights Council for a fact-finding mission on the war crimes allegations, on Friday angrily dismissed the Times report.

"These figures are way out," defence ministry spokesman Lakshman Hulugalle said. "We totally deny the allegation that 20,000 people were killed."

Amnesty said, however, that it continues to receive reports of widespread human rights violations, with more than 280,000 people displaced by the recent fighting and now restricted to state-run welfare camps in the island's north.

"The UN must address the war crimes and grave human rights
violations that have occurred - and could still be occurring - in Sri Lanka," Zarifi said. He said that despite repeated calls, the Sri Lankan government continued to restrict access to the camps by international humanitarian organisations, including the UN and the Red Cross.

"I am appealing to all these rights groups to let us get on with the job of resettling these people in their homes in the quickest possible time," Samarasinghe said. The island's military claimed complete victory over separatist Tamil Tigers after wiping out the guerrillas' leadership nearly two weeks ago.

Yeddyurappa asks Centre to 'bail out' recession hit states

Bangalore:Karanataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has asked the UPA government to work out a stimulus package for states to tide over the economic crisis caused by global downturn and sought other states' support for his demand.

"As the Centre announced two stimulus packages to insulate the economy from economic recession, there is an urgent need to come with a similar package to bail out the state governments out of this crisis", he said in an interview on the occasion of his government completing its first year in office.

The Finance department officials have been working out details of the impact caused by the global meltdown and the extent of financial losses to quantify the aid the state should seek from the Centre, he said.

Yeddyurappa, looking relaxed after his party's good performance in Lok Sabha polls in the state with 19 of the 28 seats in the state, wanted all Chief Ministers to join him in demanding a financial package to states.

"All Chief Ministers, be it ruled by Congress, BJP and allies of UPA, they should come together to put forth this demand before the Centre," he said.

"I expect the Centre to come to my state's help", said Yeddyurappa, who has been repeatedly accusing the UPA government of giving Karnataka a raw deal earlier on the ground that it was ruled by BJP.

Exuding optimism that the UPA government, which has returned to power for the second successive term, "will not continue the step-motherly treatment" to Karnataka, Yeddyurappa said, "This time, I hope they would cooperate".

Making phone calls won't stop race attacks: BJP to Govt

New Delhi:Asking the government to set up a special cell to look into the incidents of attacks on Indians abroad, BJP said on Saturday that it would raise the issue of racism in Parliament.

"The government should set up a special cell to look into the various cases of attacks, small or big, against Indians studying or working in foreign countries. This would provide a sense of security among Indians," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters in New Delhi.

Terming the attacks as "racial" and as an attempt by "certain powers" to create unrest amongst the Indian community abroad, Javadekar said the party would raise the issue in "both houses of Parliament during discussion on President's address" next week.

Referring to the telephonic conversation between External Affairs Minister S M Krishna with his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith on Friday over the attacks on Indian students in that country, the BJP spokesperson said "making phone calls will not solve the issue. All attempts must be made to provide security to Indians working or studying abroad."

He said besides Australia, Indians have also been attacked in the US. "In the past one and half years, eight Indians from Andhra Pradesh have been murdered in the US," he reminded.

Big B turns down honorary doctorate by Oz university

New Delhi:Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has reacted to racial attacks on Indian students in Australia by rejecting an honorary doctorate offered to him by an Australian university.

The Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane had offered the 66-year-old veteran a doctorate for his contribution to the world of entertainment and Bachchan had earlier accepted the title.

The honour was to be conferred on the star in July as a part of celebrations to commemorate a retrospective of his films to be inaugurated in the city.

"I have been witnessing with great dismay and shock, the recent violent attacks on Indian students in Australia, on the electronic media the entire day," Bachchan wrote on his blog.

"I mean no disrespect to the Institution that honours me, but under the present circumstances, where citizens of my own country are subjected to such acts of inhuman horror, my conscience does not permit me to accept this decoration from a country that perpetrates such indignity to my fellow countrymen," he added.

Australia has recently seen a series of attacks on Indian students, the most serious being the assault of Shravan Kumar, a 25-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh who is battling for life in a hospital here after being stabbed by a screwdriver by a group of teens in a weekend attack that also left three of his friends injured.

Bharti, Wal-Mart open first joint store in India

AMRITSAR: India's Bharti group and Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, opened their first cash-and-carry joint venture store here on Saturday on an investment of $7 million, and they plan to open at least 15 outlets across the country in the next three years.

The stores will be run under the brand name of Best Price Modern Wholesale.

"This is a beginning and we will come up with 15 more stores in three years and employ more than 5,000 people," said Bharti Enterprises vice chairman and managing director Rajan Bharti Mittal.

"We have tied up with 30,000 retailers and 8,000 suppliers and expect more to join us," Mittal said after inaugurating the outlet.

The Amritsar store, spread over about 50,000 square feet, will provide 200 direct and 500 indirect jobs.

"Within 6-12 months you will see many such ventures in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. We have brought properties there," said Mittal but declined to divulge further details.

"About 80% of our suppliers are from Punjab. We will set up our next store in Ludhiana. Each store will require about $7 million. This does not include the land price."

Raj Jain, managing director and chief executive of the joint venture Bharti Wal-Mart India, said a lot of planning and preparation had gone into the project in the past 12 months.

"The hard work will now bear fruit as we open the doors of our first cash-and-carry store in India."

Best Price Modern Wholesale will offer an assortment of around 6,000 items, including food and non-food items, at competitive wholesale prices.

Over 90% of the goods will be sourced locally, helping keep down costs.

Bharti Wal-Mart, in association with the Punjab government, has also started a training centre offering full scholarship to bridge the shortage of skilled workers for cash-and-carry and organised retail formats.

The company had earlier planned to open the store on May 26 but this had to be deferred on account of the violence that erupted in Punjab following the killing of a spiritual leader in Austria.

H-1B restrictions would choke US of talent: Premji

WASHINGTON: Wipro's executive chairman Azim Premji has warned that a proposal to restrict hiring holders of H-1B visas for skilled workers will choke America of talent coming in and could generate a trade war with countries such as India.

"In my opinion it's a very drastic initiative," he said in an interview with BusinessWeek, referring to a bill in the US Senate basically preventing firms from hiring H-1Bs in the US or bringing in holders of L1 visas for semi-skilled workers.

"It will choke the United States of talent coming in. You will not be able to substitute the absence of this talent with local hires because it's not easily available," Premji said.

"Also, you'll generate a trade war with countries such as India," he said, calling it as a freedom-of-trade issue. "It's precisely what President (Barack) Obama said in the G20 meeting: The United States will not get into a spate of protectionism."

Premji suggested the US must realize that today 60 to 70% of the growth of the revenues of large American companies comes from India and China.

"These are the growth markets. It's a simple thing for our government to raise tariffs. It's a simple thing for our government to say no American corporation will get central or state government contracts, or defence contracts," he warned.

Noting that the software and BPO industries for India represent 24% of its exports, Premji said: "These are critical industries for emerging countries... There's no way our government can take it lightly."

Asked what would happen if the bill passes, the Wipro chief said Obama "is too sensible to pass it. He's too mature".

Describing global trade in IT as vital "because the economies of all countries are getting more and more the dominance of services, versus manufacturing and agriculture", Premji said: "To risk a cycle of protectionism, it's not worth it."

"What's the total of visas issued in a year? 20,000 to India. What will you achieve? The 20,000 will come down to 12,000. You'll create 8,000 more jobs, theoretically, with the rules. "What's that compared to 9% unemployment on a total labour force of 100 million?" he asked, calling it "a very short term approach".

Asked why IBM and Accenture were employing so many people in India, Premji said: "They like the low labour rates... the quality of the people, the willingness to work hard. They're not getting the people they need in the United States. That's the bottom line."

Govt to give push to affordable housing: Selja

Saturday, May 30, 2009 (New Delhi) :With a shortage of housing estimated at nearly 25 million, the government will focus on affordable housing by involving the private sector.

"Our major focus will be on construction of affordable housing for poor and middle class people across the country by involving the private sector," Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister Kumari Selja said on Saturday.

Private sector is also recognising the growing demand for affordable housing, she said after assuming charge of the ministry for the second term.

"Notwithstanding the economic slowdown our efforts will be to put major thrust in the housing sector as our goal is that everybody should have access to affordable housing. We are moving towards that goal," she added.

She said two schemes have been launched in the first quarter of 2009 to encourage states to provide urban land at affordable costs for housing and also to reduce the cost of credit for housing for the poor.

Referring to UPA government's flagship programme Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURRUM), she said equal emphasis would be placed to facilitate the flow of institutional funds for affordable housing.

"Our budget allocation has also been increased from Rs 2500 crore to RS 3300 crore in this fiscal for carrying out the various programmes providing better amenities to people in cities," she added.

RCom may rope in Hrithik as brand ambassador

New Delhi:Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications is planning to launch a Rs 150-crore advertising campaign for its nation-wide GSM services and is believed to be on the verge of signing Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan as its brand ambassador.

According to sources, Reliance Communications is planning a Rs 150-crore media campaign for its GSM services featuring its new brand ambassador, Hrithik Roshan.

Sources said the company is in the final stages of signing an endorsement deal with Hrithik, who would be the official face for the company’s mobile, data and DTH businesses.

When contacted, the company spokesperson declined to comment.

The three-year deal with Hrithik is believed to be worth over Rs five crore annually and excludes the fees payable for appearances and events, sources said adding the overall deal could touch Rs 10 crore annually. The new campaign is expected to be on air in the first week of June.

This is Reliance Communications' first advertising campaign for its GSM service, which was launched on commercial basis in January 2009 and has since then added over 13 million subscribers.

TechM may close some Satyam offices

NEW DELHI: Some of Satyam Computer's 105 offices and 30 delivery centres worldwide may soon cease to exist. According to a report in a business daily, the Hyderabad-based company "is evaluating options to downsize operations at its overseas development centres and terminate lease contracts for offices and other properties."

By consolidating its offices and delivery infrastructure Satyam, which was recently acquired by Tech Mahindra, will be able to up capacity utilisation and also reduce overhead costs, says the report.

The review of operations is reportedly a part of Operation Phoenix, Tech Mahindra's plan of resurrecting Satyam, which has seven development centres in China, Germany, Brazil, Egypt and Malaysia.

Incidentally, Satyam's Australia chief Deepak Nangia recently quit in pursuit of greener pastures. The local head of IT company Satyam Computer services here Nangia was quoted saying by The Australian, "I left the company about three weeks ago to pursue other opportunities."

He joined Satyam in 2002 and during his tenure Nangia built Satyam Australia into a 200-million-Aus-dollars company, securing blue-chip clients such as Telstra, NAB and Qantas.

T20 World Cup: Team India lands in London

London:The India cricket team arrived at London Heathrow Airport on Friday to participate in the second World Twenty20 tournament that begins on June 5.

Before the team's departure from Mumbai earlier in the day, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who won the cup in 2007, said he was confident about retaining the title, as the current team had enough experience of 20-20 cricket.

India plays their opening match against Bangladesh on June 6 with Ireland being their other opponent in Group A of the 12-team tournament.

The 15-member India squad has a deep batting line-up and a potent pace and spin attack.

Yousuf, Razzaq back in Pak fold, might play intl cricket soon

Karachi:
Welcoming the announcement by the cricket authorities that they can play for the national team again, Pakistan's senior Test players Mohammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq have said there was no greater pride than playing for the country.

The two players with a combined experience of 125 Tests and 500 one-day internationals between them were cleared on Friday by the Pakistan Board to play for the national team again and are expected to make the squad for the Test tour of Sri Lanka from June 27.

The PCB said they would be considered for the national team again because the Indian Cricket League had accepted their resignations and they were free to play for any other team now.

"It is a great relief to be cleared to play for Pakistan again because I have missed the competition that is available while playing for your country," Yousuf said.

The senior batsman said he was targeting the tour of Sri Lanka and would start training soon for the series.

"I had given my resignation to the Board sometime back and finally the ICL has accepted it," he added.

Yousuf said he had spoken to captain Younis Khan and was looking forward to playing for Pakistan again. "What happened in the past is now in the past. My experience with the ICL was a short one but there is no greater pride then playing for your country," he said. Razzaq, who is leading the Lahore Lions team in the final of the National T20 championship, said he was relieved the ICL matter was now resolved.

Roddick advances to 4th round at French Open

PARIS: Andy Roddick reached the last 16 at the French Open for the first time in his career on Saturday by defeating France's Marc Gicquel 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

It was a stunning turnaround in fortunes on clay for the former world No.1 who went out in the first round in 2006 and 2007 before missing last year's tournament with a shoulder injury.

The win made him just the second American through to fourth round at the French Open since Andre Agassi in 2003, Robbie Ginepri having achieved the feat last year.

"I played very well," Roddick said. "I knew the crowd would not be for me but they were very respectful.

"It's a lot better than I have done here before but it's only three matches."

Roddick, who scored straight sets wins in his first two ties, bolted out into a 3-0 first set lead by breaking serve in the second game and another break four games later gave him the most encouraging of starts.

The American was solid on his own booming serve and made Gicquel struggle to hold his own which he did until the seventh game when a double fault gave Roddick two break points.

The former world No.1 cashed in on the second of these when Gicqel dumped a drop shot into the net. Roddick duly served out to go two sets up.

It was more of the same in the third set with Roddick comfortably holding serve and then blasting away with his big forehand to shorten the rallies against the lightweight Frenchman.

He grabbed the final break he needed in the third game hitting an angled forehand past his opponent and then was happy to serve out four times for the biggest win of his career on clay.

Roddick will next go up against either Jurgen Melzer of Austria or Gael Monfils of France for a place in the quarter-finals.

Also through to the last 16 in early action was German veteran Tommy Haas who defeated France's Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

It was just the second time that the 31-year-old had made it through to the fourth round in Paris and he will take on either second seed Roger Federer or Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu for a place in the last eight.

Nadal into French Open last 16

PARIS: Rafael Nadal breezed past Lleyton Hewitt for the third time in four years at Roland Garros on Friday as the four-time champion took another confident step closer to a record fifth French Open title.

Nadal won 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 to clinch a 31st consecutive win at the tournament and will now tackle either compatriot David Ferrer or Robin Soderling of Sweden for a place in the quarter-finals.

"For sure it was my best match here so far," he said.

The 22-year-old Spaniard stormed to two quick breaks to lead 5-1 in the first set against the former world number one before wrapping up the opener after just 30 minutes.

He broke again to love in the first game of the second but the gritty Hewitt, who fought back from two sets down to beat Ivo Karlovic in the first round, clinched his first break of the contest to level the set at 2-2.

But it was a brief respite as Nadal, six years younger than the former Wimbledon and US Open winner, broke back to lead 4-3 with a breathtaking forehand, picked up at his toes.

Nadal won nine of the match's last 10 games to take victory after less than two hours on court.

Fernando Verdasco edged closer to another potentially epic Grand Slam showdown with Nadal after taking the hard road to see off Spanish compatriot Nicolas Almagro.

Eighth seed Verdasco needed nine match points to defeat the 31st seed Almagro 6-2, 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (10/8) in their third round clash and will next face Russian 10th seed Nikolay Davydenko, a two-time semi-finalist.

A win there would give the 25-year-old Verdasco a probable last eight tie with Nadal against whom he lost in five sets in the Australian Open semi-finals this year.

Serbian fourth seed Novak Djokovic reached the third round with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 win over Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Djokovic will face German 29th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber who put out Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 champion, for a place in the last 16.

Chilean 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez, twice a quarter-finalist and the junior champion in 1998, ended the hopes of French wildcard Josselin Ouanna, who put out Marat Safin in the previous round, with a 7-5, 6-3, 7-5 win.

Later Friday, third seed Andy Murray of Britain meets unseeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic looking to reach the last 16 for the first time.

The winner of that tie will face Croatian 13th seed Marin Cilic who knocked out Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.

Cong-DMK deadlock over Cabinet berths ends

New Delhi:Reports just in suggest that the deadlock between Congress and DMK over ministerial berths in the Cabinet is over. Sources claim that DMK has agreed to go with three Cabinet berths.

Earlier amidst hectic parleys with senior party leaders on joining the UPA government, DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi met National Security Advisor M K Narayanan for the second time and understood to have discussed the Sri Lankan Tamils issue in the aftermath of LTTE's decimation.

The NSA, who had met Karunanidhi last night and discussed the Sri Lankan issue, called on him again this morning at his residence here and held nearly half-an-hour long closed door talks, party sources said.

Narayanan was understood to have briefed him on talks held by him and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons in the island as well as the Lankan government's plans to work out a political package to grant equal rights to the minority Tamils.

However, there was no official word on the nature of this morning's discussions between Karunanidhi and Narayanan.

Karunanidhi also met senior party leaders, including state Ministers Duraimurugan, K Ponmudi and A V Velu and held talks on joining the UPA Government. His grandnephew Dayanidhi Maran and daughter Kanimozhi were also present during the meeting, party sources said.

Samajwadi Party expels Azam Khan for six years

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party on Sunday expelled senior leader Mohammad Azam Khan for six years for anti-party activities, capping weeks of bitter feud with SP leadership over its closeness with former BJP leader Kalyan Singh and its choice of Jaya Prada as candidate from Rampur.

"Azam Khan was involved in anti-party activities for a long time. Despite the national leadership's request he continued indisciplined behaviour and did not attend party meetings due to which he has been expelled from the party for six years," SP state president Shivpal Singh Yadav said.

60-year-old Khan, SP MLA from Rampur and a founder-member of the party, had actively campaigned against cine actor-turned-politician Jaya Prada in the constituency and made adverse comments against Amar Singh.

Khan had raised banner of revolt against the party leadership after declaration of Jaya Prada's candidature from Rampur and also Mulayam Singh Yadav's friendship with former BJP leader Kalyan Singh, who was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh during the 1992 Babri mosque demolition.

He had termed Yadav's closeness with Kalyan Singh as against the sentiments of Muslims.

Khan alleged in Rampur that "the SP has been transformed into a party of brokers and capitalists, who have amassed black money to nurse their interests."

Mumbai: Crackdown on Shakeel gang, 7 arrested

Mumbai:With the arrest of seven alleged members of Chota Shakeel gang, Mumbai police have launched a crackdown on this underworld outfit to strike its network in India and South East Asia.

"Top members of Shakeel gang are in our custody. This will not only help us to know Shakeel's network in India and abroad but also to curb his activities," Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria told PTI.

The first breakthrough came early this month following the arrest of five members of Shakeel gang who were allegedly on a mission to eliminate a lawyer.

They were idenfitied as Abdul Wahab Mohammed Hassan Faqeer, Mohammed Salaam Yakub Ali Hakeem, Ramesh Warkari, Salaam Mohammed Yousuf Kazi and Fazal-ur Rehman Khan. Later, Anil Mhatre, a shooter of this gang, was killed in a police encounter in south Mumbai.

Two sharp shooters and close aides of Shakeel, Gurpreet Singh and Rashid Malbari-- top rung members of the gang—are also in police custody. While Bhullar was extradited from Bangkok on May 14, Rashid was brought from Karnataka on a transit remand on May 18. The duo was arrested on their arrival in the city.

To a question on series of arrests only of Shakeel gang members, Maria said, "We are acting upon the information received from our reliable sources. It is not like we targeted only one gang and left other one."

China bigger threat than Pakistan, says IAF chief

NEW DELHI: India faces a greater threat from China than Pakistan because New Delhi knows little about Beijing's combat capabilities, India's air force chief told a newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.

The world's two most populous nations fought a brief but brutal war over their 3,500 km (2,200 mile) Himalayan border in 1962, and both sides claim the other is occupying big but largely uninhabited chunks of their territory. India has also been pursuing closer relations with the United States, something that worries China.

China has a standing army almost three times the size of Pakistan's, according to official figures and defence industry estimates, but it is the lack of knowledge about China's military that concerned Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major.

"We know very little about the actual capabilities of China, their combat edge or how professional their military is," Major told a newspaper. "They are certainly a greater threat."

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence in 1947 and tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours rose sharply after last November's Mumbai attack, which killed 166 people. A slow-moving peace process was paused after the attack. Islamabad has acknowledged that the attack was launched from and partly planned in Pakistan, but rejected New Delhi's accusations that the gunmen had support from official Pakistani agencies.

Although India and China have signed a treaty to maintain "peace and tranquility" along their disputed frontier and agreed to find a political solution to the row, talks have hardly made progress even as their business ties boom. India blames the lack of progress on China's claim over the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, in particular over its Buddhist enclave of Tawang.

New Delhi says it cannot part with populated areas to settle the border dispute. Major said the Indian air force was upgrading about five airbases, of which two would operate Russian Su-30 MKI fighters.

Satyam may sack 8,000 non-billable staff

New Delhi:Satyam Computer is likely to sack most of its non-billable staff of up to 8,000 working in marketing, HR and administration wings, after Tech Mahindra takes charge of the company from June 1.

A Satyam official said there is no doubt that there will be large-scale sacking mostly of the support and non-billable staff (other than hardcore software engineers) once Tech Mahindra (the new owner of the company) directors come on board from June 1.

The surplus staff is about 10,000-12,000 and the 'least painful' ways of sacking is asking the bench, non-billable and support staff to go.

The company spokesperson, when contacted, said that at the moment these are mere speculations.

Sources also said the outsourcer may opt for "virtual pool" sacking method whereby the company would ask some of the staff to take 75 per cent of its salary and take one-year off and look for a job elsewhere with the fragile assurance that they would be recalled, if required.

Tech Mahindra CEO Vineet Nayyar, who will also come on board of Satyam from June after it acquired fraud hit company last month, had said last week that Satyam has about 10,000 surplus staff and "we are looking at the least painful ways to tackle the problem."

CLB may withdraw Satyam board members in Q2

New Delhi:Tech Mahindra, the new owner of Satyam, is likely to have full-board representation on the scam-tainted company soon as the government withdraws its six board members anytime next month.

A board member of Satyam said: "We get the indication from Company Law Board that once the four Tech Mahindra nominees join the Satyam board in June 1, CLB may direct the government - nominated board members to resign and ask Tech Mahindra to have the entire board representation any day after that.

Sources in CLB said it may give the direction after getting status report from the company. But at the moment there was no such request either from the government or any of the board members appointed by it.

When contacted, Satyam Board Chairman Kiran Karnik said "Our (the government-inducted board's) job is done. There is a new owner now, there is stability in the company". The company, according to sources, is also looking at changing the brand of Satyam like name and logo as it perceives the word fraud is now associated with it forever. These are long term policy decisions and can only happen once Tech Mahindra fully takes over.

Once the government takes off its board members, Tech Mahindra along with its own members can also appoint independent members as per the requirement, said the member. On Saturday Venturbay Consultants (an arm of Tech Mahindra) appointed four nominees on the board of Satyam, which will make a total of 10 directors on the Board. The CLB in January had appointed Kiran Karnik, Deepak S Parekh, C Achuthan, Tarun Das, S Balakrisha Mainak and T N Manoharan to the Board and had said they would continue on the Board until further orders of Company Law Board.

Finmin Pranab vows to protect economy

New Delhi:
India's new finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Saturday he would take steps to protect the economy from the adverse impacts of the global slump and promised to return the country to a high growth path.

Growth is expected to slow to less than 7 percent in the year to April 2009 from rates of 9 percent or more in the previous three years. It is seen slowing further to about 6 percent in 2009/10.

"Major economic issues have to be addressed, and various efforts will be made to insulate the economy from the adverse impact of the financial meltdown," Mukherjee told reporters outside his house after he was appointed finance minister.

He gave no details but he said in February spending might have to be increased to shield the economy from a global slump and stem job losses.

India's Congress-led coalition government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was sworn in on Friday after winning a decisive mandate in a geneRal Election this month.

Besides Mukherjee, Singh named Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, another Congress party stalwart, to be the new foreign minister at a time of mounting instability in neighbouring Pakistan.

The Congress-led coalition has a stronger Parliamentary majority than the previous administration, meaning the government could last its full five-year term and focus on policy issues without the pressures of a fragile coalition.

Unfettered by its former leftist allies, Congress is likely to push reforms such as raising the foreign investment limit in insurance and opening up the pension sector to spur growth in Asia's third-largest economy.

IPL News|IPL Cricket News|Indian Sports News

Johannesburg:Lusty hitting by Virat Kohli (24 not out) and Ross Taylor (17 not out) powered Royal Challengers Bangalore to a six-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings and into the final of the Indian Premier League.

The duo hit a couple of sixes each towards the end to set up title clash with Deccan Chargers after youngster Manish Pandey (48 off 35 balls) and experienced Rahul Dravid (44 off 39) set the tone with a 72-run partnership for the third wicket.

Chasing 147 for victory, Bangalore, who finished second from bottom last year, put themselves in all sorts of trouble as Jacques Kallis (9) and Roelf van der Merwe (2) were back into the pavilion with just 22 on board.

But Pandey picked up from where he left off in the last match. The 19-year-old, who scored an unbeaten 114 against Deccan Chargers -- the first century by an Indian player in the IPL -- timed his shots to perfection as Royal Challengers gradually picked up steam.

At the other end Dravid too semed to be enjoying himself as he found the boundaries on both sides of the wicket.

Together they almost took the game away from last year's runners-up before a rush of blood brought an end to the youngster's innings that included seven fours.

Dravid played some exquisite shots before Muttiah Muralitharan put an end to his innings.

With the wicket slowing down, boundaries were hard to come but Kohli and Taylor ensured there were no further hiccups as they put on 39 runs off 22 deliveries to wrap up the match with seven balls to spare.

Bottoms up: Underdogs of IPL 2008 face off in final

NEW DELHI:
The wooden spooners are now title contenders. In a dramatic turnaround of fortunes in the IPL, last year's bottom-placed teams Royal Challengers and Team Hyderabad will vie for the title in the grand finale of the second edition of the tournament in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Hyderabad, who finished rock bottom in 2008, have been enforcers from the start in IPL-2, looking a reformed outfit with Adam Gilchrist leading from the front. They seemed a little lost midway but their power-packed signings have won them the crucial moments.

The Royal Challengers, seventh last year with their much-derided ‘Test team', benefited from a change of guard midway.

With more or less the same team as last year, they have snubbed critics this time by rallying around Anil Kumble and scripting a remarkable tunraround in the late stages. They have relied less on individual heroics and instead found juniors and Test stalwarts rising equally to the occasion.

While Gilchrist single-handedly blew away Team Delhi on Friday to take Hyderabad to the final, the Challengers' skillful run chase took them past MS Dhoni's Team Chennai in the second semifinal on Saturday night.

Lalit Modi may have conceived of the idea of a grand Twenty20 spectacle in the Indian Premier League but one still has to wonder who is writing the scripts.

Last year, the team that wasn't even considered an underdog, criticised for poor player-selection, accused of spending the least among eight franchisees, won the trophy.

This year, two teams that had ended up as 2008's wooden-spooners have done the unthinkable. Bangalore and Hyderabad - last year's No. 7 and 8 - will clash in the final of IPL 2009.

The two IT cities have surprised the bookmakers, making this T20 extravaganza exciting for the second year in succession. They have ensured that anything is possible in this extremely unpredictable format.

It is hard to project a player-versus-player contest here. Will it be Adam Gilchrist's willow-power against Praveen Kumar and Jacques Kallis' new ball attack? Rohit Sharma's finesse or Andrew Symonds' belligerent hitting against Anil Kumble's precision?

This could also be a battle for youngsters like Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey competing with T Suman and Azhar Bilakhia.

On the face of it, this could be anyone's trophy. The atmosphere at the Wanderers can get quite intimidating when close to 50,000 spectators will fill up the stands.

On paper, Hyderabad definitely look the better side. The loss to Bangalore at Centurion on Thursday notwithstanding, they have a top-order boasting of some of the biggest names this format can think of.

Even if one of these players - Gilchrist and Gibbs or Symonds and Sharma - bats to his full potential, it will be enough to wipe out any opposition. Gilchrist showed precisely that in the first semifinal, cracking one of the best T20 knocks ever.

For Bangalore too, the batsmen have been at the helm in the last few matches. In fact, it has been at least one of the top-order men in every game delivering the goods.

Indians will handle pressure better at T20 WC post-IPL: Dhoni

Johannesburg:
Youngsters gaining experience in handling pressure, emergence of match-winning part-timers and valuable practice are the positives Indians have taken from the IPL as they gear up to defend their Twenty20 World Championship crown next month, says skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"Well, the good thing if you see in this tournament that will really help us in ICC World Twenty20 will be the emergence of part-timers who have done really well. Especially in the field restrictions, you have Yusuf Pathan bowling at that point, Harbhajan (Singh) has bowled and (Pragyan) Ojha also has bowled," Dhoni, who captained Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, said after the semifinal loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"Most of the spinners are part-timers who are a part of the side, they have bowled in that particular time when you as a bowler are under pressure. Not much of spin, maybe the ball holds on a bit over here. But overall the experience will really count, this tournament in the 55-60 games that took place, most of them went really close.

"Most of the Indian batsmen who were part of that winning side or maybe the bowlers who were part of that winning moment, were under pressure. They will handle the pressure well when it comes to an international T20 game also. Loads of positives that will help the players who were part of the side," he elaborated.

Dhoni said he was impressed with the domestic talent that came into limelight during the Indian Premier League. "...we have seen new domestic players also coming up and performing at this level. Overall you can say, a good tournament for us, last year's IPL did help the Indian team to perform better when it comes to T20 and even one-day format. Hopefully this year's tournament will take us to the next level," he said. Chennai were the runners-up last year but crashed out in semis this season. Dhoni said the team was done in by injuries to some key bowlers, which made their attack fragile. The wicketkeeper-batsman was also not too happy with the fielding of his team.

Shoaib set to challenge PCB medical report

Karachi:Mercurial pacer Shoaib Akhtar is on collision course with the Pakistan Cricket Board after deciding to challenge a medical report that led to his ouster from the Twenty20 World Championship squad. Shoaib has already made it clear that he would be leading the Islamabad team in the national Twenty20 championship which begins in Lahore on Monday.

Indications are that he would attack the PCB and team management here tonight at a function being organised by former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif. "Shoaib is very upset with team coach Intikhab Alam, assistant coach Aaqib Javed and manager Yawar Saeed for not supporting him and believes that they conspired to have him dropped from the T20 World Cup squad.

"He is very angry and he has decided to take on the board by playing in the domestic tournament and he might even come out in the open against the team management soon," one source close to him said. The 33-year-old was dropped from the squad after a medical panel of the board examined him for a skin infection and concluded that he was suffering from Genital Viral Warts and he needed to be rested for 10 to 12 days before another re-examination in first week of June.

The PCB ordered the medical examination after Shoaib skipped the conditioning camp in Bhurban and was treated by a private doctor and then also missed the practice matches in Lahore. "I don't know what he wants. Because we simply followed the advice of the medical panel of the board," coach Intikhab said.

With Manmohan at helm, India's new cabinet gets down to work

NEW DELHI: India's new coalition government got down to work on Saturday as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh allotted portfolios to six of 19 ministers, reminding them that they had "promises to keep".

Manmohan Singh presided over a 30-minute meeting of all his ministers at his Race Course Road residence in the morning before naming veteran Pranab Mukherjee as finance minister and handing over the foreign ministry to Fulbright scholar SM Krishna, both from his Congress party.

P. Chidambaram and AK Antony retained their home and defence portfolios while Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar also remains the agriculture, food and civil supplies minister. Pawar is also in charge of consumer affairs and public distribution.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee returned to the railway ministry after a long gap, and promptly went on to announce that she hopes to issue free rail passes to students and vendors.

Mukherjee, who returns to the finance ministry after 25 long years, promised all efforts to lift the economy out of the slowdown and said the regular budget
would be presented in due course.

"The Indian economy remains resilient," he told reporters. "All economic issues will be addressed. My priority is to put the economy back on track. Efforts will be made to insulate the Indian economy from the adverse impact of the financial
meltdown."

Mukherjee, the seniormost minister in the cabinet, immediately got the thumbs up from the industry.

"Pranab Mukherjee as finance minister will do full justice to his job and come up to the expectations of the people of India and its industry," said the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham).

In his first media interaction after taking charge, external affairs minister Krishna asked Pakistan to take "credible action" to dismantle the terror infrastructure if it wants to resume dialogue with India.

Officials said that Manmohan Singh had a busy first full working day in his second five-year innings, at the head of a Congress-led coalition that convincingly won the general elections.

After the cabinet meeting, Manmohan Singh held meetings with his officials - in the morning and again in the evening.

Manmohan Singh, along with 19 cabinet ministers, took the oath of office and secrecy Friday evening, saying economy will be his top priority. On Saturday he told the cabinet meeting: "We have made a number of promises, and we have promises to keep."

According to an official announcement, Manmohan Singh will look after all ministries apart from those allocated to the six senior cabinet ministers until more people are inducted into what will be a three-tier ministry.

According to officials in the Prime Minister's Office, the portfolios of the remaining 13 of the 19 cabinet ministers sworn in Friday would be announced after differences between the Congress and DMK over allocation of ministerial berths are sorted out.

This, a senior minister said, could happen by Tuesday, when a second round of oath-taking is expected.

Party insiders said the prime minister was not averse to inducting A Raja and T R Baalu of DMK in the cabinet but was insistent that neither would get the telecommunications and shipping ministries.

Chidambaram announced after the cabinet meeting that the first session of the 15th Lok Sabha will begin June 1. The new MPs will be sworn in June 1-2 and the speaker of the Lok Sabha will be elected June 3.

President Pratibha Patil will address the joint session of parliament June 4. This will be followed by a debate and the motion of thanks.

The 216th session of the Rajya Sabha will begin June 4 and will continue till June 9.

"The previous government had taken a vote on account
till July 31. It is our hope that the full budget will be passed by then. If it is not, another vote on account for a brief period can be taken," said Chidambaram, who was finance minister till the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack after which he was shifted to the home ministry.

It's official: Krishna gets MEA, Pranab new FM

New Delhi: S M Krishna was appointed the new External Affairs Minister on Saturday with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh deciding to give the key portfolio of Finance to Pranab Mukherjee while retaining P Chidambaram as Home Minister.

Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee will head the Railway Ministry while Sharad Pawar and A K Antony will continue as Agriculture Minister and Defence Minister respectively, a Rashtrapathi Bhavan spokesperson said.

The Prime Minister will hold the charge of all the other ministries, which are yet to be allocated, the spokesperson said.

The first expansion of the Cabinet is expected to take place on Tuesday after which all the remaining portfolios will be announced.

However, the wait continues for 13 others who were sworn in on Friday.

The limited allocation of portfolios was announced by the Rashtrapati Bhawan on the advice of the Prime Minister, who preferred to get down to business and distributed ministries on which there are apparently no no differences.

Portfolios for Ministers including Kamal Nath, Kapil Sibal, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Jaipal Reddy, Anand Sharma and new entrants like Veerappa Moily and C P Joshi are yet to be announced.

It's also the first time that portfolios are being announced in a staggered manner.

'Prabhakaran made two attempts to flee'

COLOMBO: LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran made two last-minute attempts to escape to India or Malaysia, but these came too late as the SriLankan navy had put up a effective naval blockade by then. Media reports said on Wednesday that Prabhakaran’s family has been found shot dead.

These failures left no option for Prabhakaran, who had earlier hoodwinked and outmaneuvered the Sri Lankan security apparatus, to stay put in the northern war zone and fight to the last. Prabhakaran made these attempts as Sri Lankan forces made major advances into the rebel-held territory this year, naval spokesman D K Dasanayake said.

Reports said that Prabhakaran’s wife Mathivathani, daughter
and younger son Balachandran were found shot dead on Wednesday.

Their bodies, having gunshot wounds in the head, were found a day after pictures of Prabhakaran’s body were released by the Sri Lankan authorities. The bodies were found in the Nandi Kadal lagoon area barely 600 metres from where the LTTE supremo’s body was recovered by the army. Balachandran was barely 13. Prabhakaran’s wife and daughter were not in Europe as believed but right there with the Tamil Tiger chief.

Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan alias Karuna, who was the Eastern commander of the LTTE before he fell out with Prabhakaran in 2004, and Daya Master, who surrendered to the army recently, have “positively identified” the LTTE supremo’s body.

FM Pranab's first priority: Presenting budget 09-10

New Delhi:Veteran politician Pranab Mukherjee, hailed as one of the five best Finance Ministers in the world in 1984, will re-enter the North Block as Finance Minister of the new Congress-led UPA government.

Often described as a man for all seasons and seen by his party as a trusted trouble shooter, Mukherjee's first task would be to present the budget for 2009-10 and continue the measures to boost the economy reeling under the impact of global financial crisis.

As author of the interim budget for the current fiscal, it would be easier for him to prepare the full budget for the fiscal and ensure continuity in the economic policies and programmes.

The government is required to get the budget passed by Parliament by July 31 as the vote-on-account (which allows government to withdraw money from Consolidated Fund) sought in the interim budget comes to end on July 31.

Mukherjee is a veritable encyclopaedia on Congress movement and has been a minister in all the party governments since the mid-1970s, save the Rajiv Gandhi government between 1984 and 1989.

The eternal 'number two', Mukherjee was a trusted lieutenant of late Indira Gandhi under whom he was the powerful Minister of State for Revenue during the emergency and later became a full-fledged Finance Minister between 1982 and 1984.

Mukherjee, who after a gap of 25 years became the Finance Minister in the previous UPA government, had little opportunity to excel. It was an additional charge for the External Affairs Minister after the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram was shifted to Home Ministry.

Khanduri survives as Uttarakhand Chief Minister

Dehradun:Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister B.C. Khanduri who had been facing the possibility of being replaced, has managed a survival.

Sources in the BJP told The Indian Express,” The two member committee that had come to take the views of the legislators on the issue of Khanduri’s survival, just read their report at the meeting of the Central Parliamentary Board of the party held in Delhi on Saturday evening. There was no discussion on his replacement. This simply means that he continues.”

It is learnt that health minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and irrigation minister Matbar Singh Kandari along with three other legislators had rushed to Delhi on Saturday morning to further lobby for Khanduri.

The issue that had started as an exercise to locate a possible successor of Khanduri following the latter taking the moral responsibility for the party’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls and asking the Central Parliamentary Board to take a decision on his future, had gradually turned into a power struggle based on supportive numbers of the legislators between the two rival groups led by Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and Khanduri.

Khanduri had claimed the support of 24 of the 34 legislators in the party and had conveyed this to the two member committee comprising Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Thavar Chand Gehlot that had visited Dehradun on Friday.

This is the third time that Khanduri has managed a survival on the post of the Chief Minister in the face of dissidence over the last ten months. During the latter half of last year, more than 20 legislators had approached the party headquarters twice for his removal. But the party high command had stepped in for his defense and had entrusted him the responsibility of delivering good results in the Lok Sabha polls. Having led the party to a series of polls in the last two years, Khanduri could not get the party to win even a single seat out of five in the Lok Sabha polls. Heavy anti incumbency accompanied by internal strife in the party led to the dismal performance.

New Govt plans budget by end-July

New Delhi:The new coalition Government hopes to win Parliament approval for the union budget for 2009/10 by the end of July, Cabinet minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said on Saturday.

The date for the presentation of the budget has not yet been decided, Chidambaram told reporters.

"We hope that we will be able to pass the full budget by July 31," he said after the first cabinet meeting of the new Government following a General Election.

"If not, we will have to take another vote-on-account for a very short period," he said referring to a temporary measure to allow government spending.

The central Government had presented an interim budget in February to get parliament approval for necessary expenditure until July 31, and left it to the new government to present a formal budget.

Chidambaram said the decision on whether the government would present a vote-on-account or a full budget would be taken later by the ruling coalition government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Financial markets are waiting to get a sense of the new government spending plans and steps to repair public finances. The government had said in February that expenditure may jump later this year to shield the economy from a global slump.

The government faces a widening deficit, slowing growth and huge expectations for fresh stimulus to protect growth and jobs.

Mexico to lay off 700,000 workers in 2009

MEXICO: Mexico will lay off around 700,000 of its total workforce in the current year because of the sharpening of the economic crisis in the country, official sources said.

The prediction was made on the basis of the data compiled by the National Confederation of Industrial Chambers of Mexico (CONCAMIN).

According to the data by CONCAMIN the deepening of the financial crisis coupled with the recent slowdown in the tourism sector because of the H1N1 influenza epidemics will further cause a setback to the Mexican Gross Domestic Product which is expected to be around 6 per cent.

The industrial sector will see a fall of 13 per cent, while the maquilas will see a fall of 16 per cent, CONCAMIN president Salomon Presburguer said.

They can revert the impact by fostering into the domestic market, Presburguer added.

The Mexican GDP has already dropped to 9.8 per cent with a loss of 626,000 jobs with the industry laying off around 323,000 workers.

Modi mulls two IPLs every year

LONDON:
With the Indian Premier League proving a smashing hit in its adopted home in South Africa, the organisers of the Twenty20 razzmatazz are mulling a second and shorter version of the event in the same calendar year at an overseas location.

IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi told 'The Daily Telegraph' that the success of the second IPL has prompted the organisers to explore untapped territories like United States and Canada and the League's Governing Council would discuss the issue after the tournament ends in Johannesburg on Sunday.

"The potential is huge," Modi said. "We have turned the challenges and adversities in moving to South Africa into an opportunity. It is fans who determine if you are successful or not and they have come out in force. It has shown that the tournament can be in any region, in any country. This opens up many different opportunities for us," Modi was quoted as saying by the daily.

The IPL mastermind made it clear that India would host the first season and it's only for the second season in the same calendar year that a foreign destination
would be considered.

"The IPL will be based in India, but the second season we are planning gives us the chance to see if a market exists and we are seriously looking at what we can do with it," Modi said.

"America throws up challenges but the format we have developed works. It is an opportunity for families to spend a day out. Apart from watching great cricket they have an enjoyable evening out. That will work anywhere," he said.

"Before this tournament we did not know if we could do it. But we do know now. We have to satisfy an appetite across the world and build a fan base across the world," Modi added.

Modi said the Indian cricket board (BCCI) would be in touch with its English and South African counterparts but ruled out the prospect of any country hosting back-to-back events.

"We will talk to the England and Wales Cricket Board, and South Africa are natural allies who want us to come back every year. The public and the boards want us but it is not realistic to come back to the same place every year."

While a second IPL in the same calendar year jeopardises Test cricket's survival, Modi beg to differ.

"People who say we cannot work alongside Test cricket just don't understand. You don't need everyone available all the time. You don't need all countries to be free.

"In England the Premier League runs at the same time as the Spanish and Italian leagues. We can do the same. They can run concurrently. To do that we must showcase and produce our own stars," Modi said.

"England are playing the West Indies now so those teams are out but not Australia, South Africa or uncapped England players. That is where the misunderstanding is taking place," he added.

Nadal poised to claim French Open history

Paris:Rafael Nadal believes his game is almost perfect as he targets an historic fifth successive French Open title.

The 22-year-old world number one, whose incredible Roland Garros record stands at 28 wins from 28 matches, has already written off losing his 33-match claycourt streak to old rival Roger Federer in Madrid last week.

He believes a combination of a draining four-hour semi-final victory over Novak Djokovic and the high altitude of the Spanish capital conspired against him.

"I am very happy with my claycourt season. I won in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome and made the final in Madrid. It's almost perfect," said Nadal, the top seed.

"Madrid was a different tournament. The court was fast, the balls were flying
and I didn't play that well."

Adding to his confidence is the knowledge that he has beaten Federer in the last three finals at Roland Garros.

Federer, who is one title short of matching Pete Sampras's all-time mark of 14 majors, needs a French Open to become only the sixth man to complete a career Grand Slam.

But he's travelled this road before. Two years ago, Federer ended Nadal's 81-match winning streak on clay at Hamburg to instill fresh confidence of finally cracking the French code, but he was to be denied once the duo resumed hostilities in Paris.

On the evidence of the 2008 tournament, where Nadal didn't drop a set in seven matches and Federer won just four games in a brutally one-sided final, the Swiss star again looks doomed.

But Federer refuses to concede defeat, believing that his win in Madrid, which was his 58th title, but first of 2009, could represent another launchpad.

"He has never lost in Paris so obviously his confidence is very high, but I think we have seen that if you play Rafa the right way there are chances," said the 27-year-old, world number two.

"In Madrid it was important that I played well when I had to which I wasn't doing before because there was something lacking in my game, just a lack of practice maybe."

Sunday's meeting in Madrid was the pair's 20th career clash with Nadal holding the upper hand 13-7 overall, and 9-2 on clay.

Their rivalry is one of sports' most compelling with Nadal having dethroned Federer as Wimbledon champion in an epic final in 2008 before the Spaniard reduced the Swiss to a tearful wreck after victory in Australia this year in another five-set thriller.

In the unlikely event of the June 7 final not being a repeat of the last three, Djokovic, who had three match points against Nadal in his Madrid semi-final, would be the most likely beneficiary.

But the big-hearted Serbian, who turned 22 on Friday, has lost all nine claycourt meetings with Nadal, including four in 2009 - in Davis Cup, Monte-Carlo, Rome and then in Spain.

Djokovic has reached the semi-finals in Paris for the last two years, losing to Nadal on each occasion without claiming a set.

"It's not that easy. I probably played one of the best matches of my life against him (in Madrid), but he made some unbelievable shots to win those points which he did - again," sighed the Serbian.

Britain's Andy Murray has lost both his claycourt meetings with Nadal and despite holding a 6-2 advantage over Federer, the two have never met on clay.

In two visits to the French Open, Murray has yet to get beyond the third round.

But he is confident he can make a deep run into the event.

"Against the real clay-courters that play a lot of top spin, you can almost try and make it a hardcourt match by playing a little bit flatter and coming to the net and bit an shortening the points," said Murray.

Nadal faces a qualifier in his first match before a possible third round clash with Australian former world number one Lleyton Hewitt.

Federer opens against Spain's Alberto Montanes with old American rival Andy Roddick
seeded to face him in the last eight.

Third seeded Murray renews his fierce rivalry with Argentinians when he meets Juan Ignacio Chela, while fourth seed Djokovic faces experienced Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador.

If the seeding works to plan, then Nadal would face Murray in the semi-finals while Djokovic would take on Federer.

Sehwag, Gambhir need to shed fatigue before T20 WC: Tendulkar

New Delhi, May 23: India has the wherewithal to defend the Twenty20 World Cup in England but openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir will have to overcome the fatigue factor if the team is to achieve the goal, reckons Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar was impressed with the way the Indian youngsters performed in the ongoing Twenty20 tournament in South Africa but the Mumbai Indian captain also pointed out that both Sehwag and Gambhir have not been consistent enough.

"I think, individually the boys are doing well. Look at Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, MS (Dhoni). In the bowling department Zaheer was doing well before he got injured and RP Singh has come up by leaps and bounds. Only our opening combination of Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag haven`t fired," Tendulkar said.

"I think the key would be how soon they can shed off the fatigue factor. They have been playing back to back for a long time now and it would difficult to keep up the tempo," Tendulkar told a sports website.

Incidentally, India coach Gary Kirsten had earlier expressed a similar concern.

Tendulkar, however, was of the view that IPL has been an ideal preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup.

"...It is. You are playing the same format and you are playing against the best bowlers and also not in home conditions. So, I think this is a good preparation except that the players should take adequate rest between the IPL and the ICC World Twenty20," he said.

The Mumbaikar also reiterated his stance that even though he enjoyed playing Twenty20, he never thought about representing India in this slam-bang format lest it disturbs the team composition.

"I never thought that I would play the ICC World Twenty20. MS Dhoni and his Twenty20 team have done wonderfully well and I just hope they continue to do so. I have no plans to play T20 for India,” Tendulkar said.

About his team`s debacle in the ongoing IPL, he said, "We blew hot and cold. There were times when we could have done better than we did. I think it is a batsman`s format and in our case it was the batsmen who let us down."

Asked for his reaction on Harbhajan Singh`s comment that the spinner didn`t know what his role was in the team, Tendulkar said "I won`t like to comment on that, it is his personal opinion."
