26/11: 4-member Indian team in US to quiz Headley

CHICAGO: A team of Indian investigators arrived in the US on Tuesday to interrogate for the first time David Coleman Headley, accused of helping Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists carry out the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

The team comprises officers of the National Investigation Agency and a law officer. This will be for the first time that 49-year-old Pakistani-American Headley will be facing direct questions from Indian investigators since his arrest in October last year.

Besides the Indian team, those expected to be present during the questioning would be Headley's lawyer and an officer of the FBI.

The questioning of Headley, currently being held in the federal lock-up Metropolitan Correctional Centre here, is going to revolve around the places he had visited after the Mumbai terror attacks and the people he had remained in touch with during his stay in India.

Sources in India said the four-member team has prepared questions about his stay in the country especially during March 2009, his last visit to India.

The travel details of Headley, the globe-trotting prized asset of the LeT, are being sought mainly as investigators believe that this visit may have been to finalise the synchronised terror strikes on Jewish houses located in five cities, the sources said.

They said the government has kept 'backup staff' in readiness if the team needed any assistance.

The statement of Headley would be recorded by the Special Law Officer of India after which the NIA, which has registered a case against Headley and Pakistani-Canadian national Tahawwur Rana for waging war against the country and Unlawful Activities Prevention (Act), may file a chargesheet against him.

Headley, a Chicago-based American with roots in Pakistan, has already confessed to have conducted several reccees as part of the planning for the ghastly attacks that killed 166 people in the country's financial capital in November 2008.

After being arrested in October last year, the 49-year old entered into a plea bargain with the US government in March this year, wherein he offered to be available to foreign investigators through deposition, video conferencing or letters rogatory.

However, further details like for how many hours or days the Indian team would get access to Headley, were not yet given.

Headley's lawyer John Theis said last week he would not comment on any specific details of such an access and "would not be able to share specific information at this point" as to when and for how long the team from India can question Headley.

The team has been sent following a communication from the US Justice Department that all concerned officials and the lawyer of Headley will be available during their visit to facilitate their access to Headley.

Gunmen storm Lahore hospital, 12 dead

Lahore: At least four gunmen attacked a hospital in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore on Tuesday morning, killing up to a dozen people and holding several hostage before escaping, a senior doctor said.

"They barged into the hospital building and opened indiscriminate fire," said Javed Ikram, chief executive of Jinnah hospital.

He said at least 12 people were killed in the firing while some had been held hostage.

Senior city government official Sajjad Bhutta said, "They were four gunmen clad in elite police uniform, and entered the hospital building and opened fire. Then they ran toward the intensive care unit where their companion was being treated."

Police guards fired back, he said, and they fled. One of them was wounded.

He added that five people were killed, which included three policemen, a woman and a private security guard.

Dozens of people wounded in Friday's attacks on two mosques of a minority religious community in the city were being treated in the hospital, which is a major institution in the city. More than 80 people were killed in those attacks.

The attackers were either trying to rescue or kill a wounded attacker from Friday's assault who was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of Jinnah Hospital, said Punjab police chief Tariq Saleem Dogar.

"There are blood patches at the entrance of the hospital building," a report said. "Pillows, biscuits and other food stuff and shoes are strewn on the floor."

People and patients who were able ran from the hospital and television footage showed exhausted looking women climbing over security fences to escape.

The attackers themselves fled after the mayhem, officials said.

"They escaped from the scene," Lahore commissioner Khusro Pervez Khan said. "We are in hot pursuit. We are chasing them. One of them was wounded."

A witness said that a police commando team had stormed into the hospital.

Did police moles double-cross state by helping Reds?

KOLKATA: Officers involved in counter-insurgency operations in Maoist areas have come under the scanner after the Jnaneswari Express sabotage, not just because they failed to decipher the rebels' coded chatter in time but also because they were let down — or betrayed — by the moles police have planted in the Maoist and PCPA ranks.

The train carnage has busted police claim that they have built a strong information network in the PCPA militia, even penetrating their leadership — particularly the Lodhashuli-Manikpara-Sardiha unit that carried out the sabotage and killed nearly 150 people.

Investigation has revealed that either the moles have gone beyond the control of their handlers or the Maoists have identified them and are using them to mislead or dodge security forces. There is a third scenario: the moles may be playing double agents.

The Maoist expansion in the Manikpara-Lodhashuli area came to light when the local militia hijacked the Bhubaneswar Rajdhani at Banstala halt in October 2009, five months after joint forces started operations in Lalgarh. After the incident, Dhanapati Mahato of Hadhadi village near Manikpara was identified as an important PCPA leader. He was arrested on January 15 this year and booked under UAPA, which allows police to hold an accused in custody for at least 180 days without submitting a chargesheet.

Strangely, however, Dhanapati was released on bail 130 days later — perhaps the first in Bengal to get away relatively lightly after being booked under UAPA.

Police sources said releasing Dhanapati was one of their boldest moves yet to penetrate the PCPA ranks. He was a known politician before he joined the rebels during the Lalgarh upsurge and had good relations with CPM.

Lower marks in CBSE can get you higher grades

MUMBAI: At a time when the Central Board of Secondary Education has replaced marks with grades and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), here's a glaring paradox. An analysis of the new system shows that it's possible for a student with a higher percentage in the CBSE Class X examination to get a lower CGPA than a student with a lower percentage.

The inference is only possible in a place like Maharashtra, where schools have been provided marks as well as grades and grade points. In other states where the CBSE board has not released students' marks, this would not have been possible.

According to the new system, a score of 91-100 in a subject is equivalent to A1 grade and a CGPA of 10. Similarly 81-90 equals an A2 grade and a CGPA of 9, 71-80 works out to a B1 grade and a CGPA of 8 and so on.

Avnita Bir, principal of RN Podar School in Santa Cruz, where 55 students scored a CGPA of 10, and 102 students scored 91% and above, carried out an analysis of the correlation between grades, marks and grade points. She has shared real-life examples with TOI —of the scores that students from her school got — to highlight the paradox in the new system. A student called Himani scored 91.2% in the CBSE exams with a CGPA of 9.4 while her classmate Akash scored 1% less and yet had a higher CGPA of 9.6.

The reason? While Hemani had scored exceptionally high marks in some subjects, and less in others, Akash's scores were more or less uniform throughout, pointed out Bir. There were subjects for which both scored the same grade and grade point, though Himani scored higher marks.

"There's an interesting inference to be drawn from this. With the new system, it pays to be jack of all trades and master of none. Those who perform uniformly across subjects get a higher CGPA than those who score very high in some subjects and less in others," said Bir.

While it's easy to correlate grades with grade points for an individual subject, it's virtually impossible to do so for the cumulative grade point average, which is the average of the grade points in each of the five subjects.

So, for instance, if a student gets an A1 in maths, the grade point works out to 10. But if the cumulative grade point average is in decimals (eg, 9.5) it's hard to figure out whether a student's overall grade is A1, which corresponds to a CGPA of 10, or A2, which corresponds to a CGPA of 9.

The solution, feels Bir, is to shift from percentages to CGPAs without worrying about an overall grade.

Congress, RLD tie up for Rajya Sabha polls

NEW DELHI: Congress and Ajit Singh's RLD have tied up for the UP Rajya Sabha elections in what can potentially lead to a larger political alliance between the two ahead of UP elections.

Sources in the Congress said Ajit Singh's decision to support Congress's Satish Sharma was only the beginning of the process and that negotiations between the two sides looked at the possibility of a long-term partnership.

The details are yet to be worked out, and given Ajit Singh's reputation as a tough bargainer, Congressmen will not like to risk guesses about the outcome. But the party is keen to rope in Ajit Singh before the battle for the 2012 UP polls is joined. "We don't know how it is going to unroll, but merger of RLD is a possibility that we are looking at," a source said.

Congress and Ajit Singh tried negotiating a power-sharing pact at the Centre but could not get very far because of the gap between what the Jat leader insisted on and what Congress was ready to offer.

RLD is a pale shadow of the once-formidable Lok Dal which, under Ajit's father Chaudhary Charan Singh, became an important challenger to Congress. Unlike the Lok Dal which commanded the allegiance of intermediate castes across large swathes of north India, RLD's support base has shrunk only to the Jat segment which still swears by the legacy of "Chaudhary Saheb".

But the party has also shown considerable tenacity, defying predictions of near extinction. Though confined to the Jat-dominated pockets of UP, its loyalist base can be a good strategic fit for Congress's plan to put up a vastly improved performance in UP polls whose outcome will have a bearing on Rahul Gandhi's career moves.

The tie-up is significant also because it shows that fears provoked among Congress's rivals after it retained power at the Centre is yet to crystallize into anti-Congressism. It also illustrates the ability of Congress to find allies from the Opposition column even when it is hardly coy about its intent to put an end to the "era of coalitions".

Besides partnering Ajit Singh, Congress managers can hope to attract support also from Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party to ensure Satish Sharma's smooth election to Rajya Sabha. It has also worked out an arrangement with Ramvilas Paswan for RS elections in Bihar in a move to keep options open for the state which goes to polls later this year.

Talks are on with H D Deve Gowda's JD(S) as well. Though the former prime minister is giving some tough moments to Congress, the party wishes to have more options than observers thought it would have after the 2009 results.

Gorshkov to be handed over to India by Dec '12

NEW DELHI: After closely examining the ongoing refit work on Admiral Gorshkov in Russia, the Navy is now confident the aircraft carrier will be ready for harbour trials by early-2011 to ensure it can be handed over to India by December 2012 or so.

This comes after a naval team, led by controller of warship production and acquisitions Vice-Admiral N N Kumar, recently visited Russia to examine the 44,570-tonne Gorshkov at the Sevmash Shipyard.

"There has been substantial progress since the last examination in September 2009. Around 99% of the structural work and almost 50% of the cabling work has been completed on the carrier. Almost all large-size equipment, like engines, diesel generators and the like, has been installed,'' said an officer.

With India earlier this year agreeing to the revised refit cost of $2.33 billion for Gorshkov, after three years of bitter wrangling since the earlier agreement inked in January 2004 had earmarked only $974 million for it, Russia has appointed a high-level apex committee to oversee the work on the carrier.

Along with the fresh Gorshkov agreement, India also inked a contract with Russia for 29 more MiG-29Ks for $1.46 billion in March this year. These fighters will be in addition to the original 16 MiG-29Ks ordered through the $1.5-billion package deal for Gorshkov signed in January 2004.

The Navy plans to deploy two carrier-battle groups (CBGs) by 2014-2015, as reported by TOI earlier. The first CBG will be centred around Gorshkov, rechristened INS Vikramaditya, while the second will be on the 40,000-tonne indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) being constructed at the Cochin Shipyard, which Navy hopes to get by 2014.

As of now, the Navy is "stretching'' the operational life of the 50-year-old 28,000-tonne INS Viraat, even though it's left with only 11 of its Sea Harrier jump-jets.

A weak Asian trend further fulled the downtrend, they said.

British Airways heading for more disruption

London: The beleaguered British Airways is heading for more strike and disruption to its flight services throughout this summer with its cabin crew set to ballot for fresh industrial action.

Tony Woodley, joint leader of Unite, BA's major union, said a new ballot for strikes could be only a week or so away, as the five-day walkout by union members entered its third day on Tuesday. The union said the series of strikes since March had now cost BA almost 100 million pounds, with eight further days of action planned.

BA, however, said it had operated more services than planned on Sunday and yesterday, including the re-introduction of all of its services from Heathrow to New York's JFK

airport, adding that it would continue to add to its schedule where possible.

Meanwhile, Woodley claimed the union had paid out about 1 million pounds in strike pay, pledging that Unite would not allow the airline to "starve" staff back to work. He told

Unite's annual conference in Manchester the "hard man" stance of BA chief executive Willie Walsh will plunge the airline into a prolonged and "totally needless" summer of disruption.

A fresh ballot will be needed because the 12-week protective legal period for taking industrial action ends in early this month.

Woodley said if crew were forced to seek a new mandate for industrial action the blame for this will lie "firmly" with Walsh and his "persistent refusal" to permit a peaceful settlement.

Unite said it believed a deal on cabin crew costs had already been agreed between both parties, adding that the airline could be restored to full operation in time for thepeak summer season if the outstanding row over travel concessions was resolved.

Woodley told the 700 delegates that the dispute could be summed up in one word - bullying.

"Bullying that imposes radical changes on our members without agreement, that has seen other BA employees incited against cabin crew with, to their lasting shame, the collusion of scab pilots, that has meant more than 50 of our brothers and sisters suspended or sacked for the crime of sending a text or posting a remark on Facebook, that forbids them fromtalking about their own dispute in public and that victimises trade unionists by branding them second-class employees for life.

"Well, there is only one thing to do with bullies - that is stand up to them until they learn some manners. We all know there is a deal to be struck, one that recognises the real commercial needs and problems of the company as well as our members' legitimate interests.

But we are not and never will be prepared to see our members and our union humiliated, victimised and reduced to ruins, as Willie walsh seems to say."

Telcos pay Rs 6,7719cr 3G fees

NEW DELHI: Government received Rs 67,719 crore from nine telecom players, including BSNL and MTNL, on Monday as 3G spectrum licence fees. The licences were auctioned in a 34-day long process that ended on May 19.

The spectrum bonanza continues as on Monday, the bid for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum touched Rs 21,664 crore. As BWA auction is still on, the total amount is expected to rise further.

The government had earlier projected to collect Rs 35,000 crore from the sale of 3G and BWA spectrum put together. So far, the amount has already gone up to Rs 89,383 crore. So, government's fiscal deficit is likely to come down to 4.5% from the estimated figure of 5.5%. The government will get at least Rs 54,383 crore more than what it had estimated.

On Monday, Bharti Airtel paid the highest Rs 12,295.46 crore for 3G spectrum in 13 circles, followed by Vodafone (Rs 11,617.86 crore). State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) also paid Rs 10,186.56 crore and Rs 6,564 crore respectively for the radio waves. Earlier, it was being speculated that both BSNL and MTNL may not be able to pay the amount, considering their poor financial condition. Anil Ambani group firm Reliance Communications deposited Rs 8,585.04 crore. The company has bagged 3G spectrum in 13 circles, including Delhi and Mumbai.

All the successful bidders will get spectrum in September this year after it gets vacated by the Defence. 3G services will offer subscribers high-speed data on mobile phones and are expected to start by January-March. Among other private operators, Idea Cellular, Tatas, Aircel and STel have also paid their respective bid amounts to the Department of Telecom (DoT).

At the same time, competition in BWA is hotting up with pan-India bid for single licence touching Rs 7,221 crore. There are three pan-India slots for BWA spectrum. Going by the demand, which is more than availability in crucial circles, including metros, the bid is likely to increase further.

Among the individual circles, bid for Delhi and Mumbai is equal at Rs 1,012.96 crore, followed by Tamil Nadu at Rs 943.17 crore. There was negative demand in 12 circles, excess demand in four, while six circles had equal demand and supply.

The government is auctioning two slots of 20 MHz of pan-India BWA spectrum. BSNL and MTNL, which have already been given the BWA spectrum ahead of private players, will have to pay the equivalent of the winning bid in each service area.

As many as 11 companies are bidding for BWA spectrum. Apart from Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communication, Idea Cellular, Aircel, Vodafone and Tata Communications Internet Services, the BWA aspirants has four new players — Augere, Tikona Wireless, Infotel Broadband Services and Qualcomm, and Spice Internet and Infotel.

BWA spectrum allows companies to offer high-speed Internet access as well as Internet telephony and TV services. It can also be used for voice and high-speed data services. The reduction in fiscal deficit will reduce borrowings of the government, which in turn will be able to cool down inflation.

Lalit Modi replies to his 2nd showcause notice

Mumbai: Suspended IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi has sent his reply to the second showcause notice served on him, to the BCCI by e-mail.
"Yes he has sent it last night," informed Modi`s Legal Counsel Mehmood Abdi on Tuesday.

Abdi is scheduled to go to the BCCI headquarters here to handover the hard copy of the reply which is expected to be just over 24 pages.

The showcause notice was pertaining to an e-mail sent to the BCCI by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chairman Giles Clarke in which he had alleged that Modi tried to damage the existing structure of international and English cricket.

Modi yesterday filed defamation notice on Clarke, mentioning that the ECB boss has accused the suspended IPL Chief of seeking to float a rebel league in England, violating International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations.

Modi was also served a third showcause notice yesterday by the BCCI over theatrical rights and 150-second commercial slot in between balls during the telecast of IPL-3.

Modi has already replied to the first showcause notice served on him with a staggering 15,000-page response.

The first showcause notice alleged that Modi had indulged in murky deals and bid-rigging in IPL.

Five-star Finn strikes as England beat Bangladesh

London: Steven Finn took five wickets on his home debut as England beat Bangladesh by a convincing eight-wicket margin in the first Test at Lord’s here on Monday to go 1-0 up in this two-match series.
Bangladesh, following-on, were bowled out for 382 shortly before lunch on the final day with Middlesex fast bowler Finn taking five wickets for 87 runs in 24 overs.

That gave the 6ft 7in paceman, who played his first two Tests during England’s 2-0 series win in Bangladesh in March, match figures of nine for 187.

England, set 160 to win in two sessions, finished on 163 for two.

Andrew Strauss, the England captain, in his first international match for several months after resting from the tour of Bangladesh and missing the World Twenty20 triumph, as he no longer plays that form of the game, made 82 before he was out with England 13 runs short of victory.

Jonathan Trott, whose Test-best 226 was the centrepiece of England’s first innings, was unbeaten on 36 after ending the match with a boundary.

Kevin Pietersen was 10 not out.

“In the first innings I thought Jonathan Trott played very well, we talked about getting big scores and he showed great temperament,” Strauss said.

“And Steven Finn bowled very well. He hit the deck hard and got good pace and bounce, and he got more out of the pitch than anyone else.”

But Strauss was far from completely satisfied, adding: “They made it hard work for us with the way they batted.

“Our bowling was not quite as good as it should have been in the first half of the game.”

The 21-year-old Finn refused to get carried away amid talk he’d already secured a place in England’s squad for the defence of the Ashes in Australia in November.

“The only reason I played here is because Stuart Broad is being rested and, while I haven’t done myself any harm, I am not kidding myself,” he said.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was disappointed his side could not hold out for what would have been a first draw against England.

“We lost too may wickets in the morning session,” he said. “If we had lost one or two wickets we could have batted another hour or two after lunch and got a draw.”

Strauss, like Finn playing on his home ground, square cut the first ball of England’s chase, from Shahadat Hossain for four, to spark several boundaries in quick succession.

The left-hander missed at slip against off spinner Mahmudullah, went onto complete a run-a-ball fifty with five fours before he was caught behind, by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim, cutting against the spin of Shakib, to end a second wicket stand of 80.

Victory gave England their seventh win in as many Tests against Bangladesh and left the Tigers with just three wins from 67 matches at this level.

But there was no denying Bangladesh’s progress in this fixture.

Earlier, Finn took three wickets for eight runs in 15 balls on Monday to secure his place on the Lord’s honours boards.

Bangladesh began the last day on 328 for five having seen Tamim Iqbal make 103 off just 100 balls on Sunday.

Junaid Siddique, 66 not out overnight, and Shakib, unbeaten on two, took guard under cloudy skies favouring England’s seam attack.

England did not have long to wait for a sixth wicket with Shakib cutting Finn straight to the bowler’s county colleague Eoin Morgan at point.

Siddique had, like Tamim, made a first innings fifty.

But there was to be no second innings hundred.

The left-hander drove too soon at a clever Finn slower ball and was caught at mid-off by Tim Bresnan for 74 to end nearly four-and-a-quarter hours of resistance.

Bangladesh’s collapse continued when Mushfiqur was caught behind off Finn for nought before Bresnan polished off the tail.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 282 in their first innings, senior paceman James Anderson leading the attack with four for 78.

England’s first innings saw Shahadat beat Tamim to a place on the honours boards with five wickets for 98 runs.

The second and final Test of this series starts at Old Trafford on Friday.

Pakistan to host SA in the emirates in Oct-Nov

Karachi: Pakistan will host South Africa for a revised series of two Tests, five one-day internationals and a one-off Twenty20 match in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in October-November this year.

The series is being held in the emirates after the South Africans refused to tour Pakistan because of the prevailing security situation there.

Originally, the series had three Tests, three one-dayers and a Twenty20 match but Pakistan requested South Africa to revise the schedule keeping in mind next year’s 50-over World Cup.

“We felt that with the World Cup coming up, it would be better for both the teams to play an extra one-day match then a third Test match,” a Pakistan Cricket Board official said.

Pakistan has been isolated as an international venue since March last year when militants attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.

The attack that shook the cricketing world killed five Pakistani policemen and a van driver and wounded six Sri Lankan players.

Since then no foreign team has agreed to visit the strife-torn nation, forcing Pakistan to play its share of home series at neutral venues.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai had already hosted Pakistan’s series against Australia and New Zealand.

PCB chairman Ejaz Butt said that he was grateful to the Cricket South Africa (CSA) for agreeing to play the series in the UAE.

“I am very grateful to Dr Mtutuzeli Nyoka and Gerald Majola (CSA chief executive) for their understanding of our position and supporting us to make this series possible. I would especially like to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for their unwavering support to Pakistan Cricket,” Butt said in a statement.

“This series will provide great entertainment for cricket fans as PCB and CSA have worked hard to bring this event about and we are very excited to be returning to the world class facilities in the UAE,” he added.

CSA chief executive Gerald Majola said, “The Proteas always enjoy playing Pakistan and CSA was glad to assist the PCB and ensure this tour happened. We are especially delighted that the fans will get to see top flight cricket between these two teams.”

With this series, Dubai Sports City and Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed stadium’s will make its debut as Test venues.

Shibu Soren resigns as Jharkhand chief minister

RANCHI: An isolated Shibu Soren tonight resigned as Jharkhand chief minister after failing to get the support of Congress and its ally JVM(P) ahead of Monday’s trust vote in the assembly.

Soren met Governor M O H Farooq and submitted his resignation. Soren has been asked to continue as caretaker chief minister till an alternate arrangement is made, Principal Secretary to the Governor Sudhir Tripathi said.

With odds stacked against him, Soren, who has been holding on to his post after reneging on a power-sharing deal with the BJP, made overtures to the Congress which was not forthcoming.

"We appealed to the political parties to support the Soren Government in the interest of the state and to prevent imposition of President's rule. Till tonight, nobody has come forward," Deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahto told reporters at Raj Bhavan after Soren put in his papers.

Mahto said, "We learnt that all these parties have decided to vote against the Government tomorrow during the floor test."

Mahto, leader of JMM ally, AJSU, said in the light of these developments, the two coalition partners met today and decided that the chief minister should resign on "moral grounds".

The JMM, which has 18 MLAs, needs the support of 42 members to sail through the confidence vote in the 82-member assembly. The government has the support of 25 MLAs -- JMM-18, AJSU-5 and Independent 2.

Soren was pinning his hopes of getting the support of Congress with 14 MLAs and its ally Jharkhand Vikas Morcha(Prajatantric) having 11 legislators to sail through the trust vote.

BJP with 18 MLAs and JD(U) with two had withdrawn support to the Soren government after Soren had backed the UPA government by voting against cut motions sponsored by the opposition in the Lok Sabha.

BJP's decision came after Soren backtracked on a power sharing deal under which Arjun Munda would have led a BJP-led government for 28 months and the JMM would rule for the remaining period.

The Congress chose not to reveal its strategy, saying it would take a decision alongwith JVM(P) only tomorrow, adding to Soren's frustration.

Last week, the JVM-P leadership had said they would vote against the Soren government.

The strength of the other parties in the house is: RJD - 5, CPI (ML-Liberation) - one, Marxist Coordination Committee - one, Jharkhand Party - one, Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch - one and Independents - two, besides a nominated MLA.

The lone CPI-ML-liberation MLA, Vinod Kumar Singh has already announced to vote against the trust vote.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar escapes bid on life as man fires at car

BANGALORE: Art of Living (AOL) founder and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar narrowly escaped a bid on his life when a gunman opened fire on his car soon after a satsang at his sprawling ashram on Kanakapura Road on Sunday evening.

AOL representatives and police told TOI that soon after a satsang at the yagyashaala, a hall in the ashram, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar got into a Toyota Innova. As the van was moving, a man fired a shot. The bullet missed him and hit a devotee in the thigh, causing minor injury.

Ramanagaram deputy superintendent of police Devaraj said: ''One round of ammunition has been recovered. Forensic Science Laboratory officers visited the spot.''

Karnataka home minister V S Acharya confirmed the attack to a news channel. ''I am waiting for more details. He's safe,'' said the minister.

The incident took place around 6.15 PM when Ravishankar was returning to his 'Kutir' by car after addressing a gathering at the 'Satsang', ashram spokesperson Charu said.

"We usually have a satsang from four PM every Sunday till around six where even people from neighbouring villages join us. Sri Sri had addressed those gathered at the Satsang and completed his discourse and was returning to his `kutir' by car when the incident occurred," she said.

Sri Sri Ravishankar, who has a wide following all over the country and abroad, where he has set up centres of his organisation, said he had gone ahead with his discourse even after the incident.

Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya said central range IG Kamal Panth has been sent to the ashram to inquire about the incident. "There is no problem... everything is peaceful there," he said.

The guruji told a TV channel late in the night: "The man fired only one bullet and ran away. He could have fired many rounds. Devotees should maintain calm." He also said that he had not received any threat earlier.

In his message to the followers, he said, "Ahimsa Pratishthayaam Tat Sanidhav Vaira Taygah" (For one who is established in non-violence, all kinds of hostility ceases", spokesperson of the ashram Aswin Nandkumar told PTI.

"The guru has asked his followers not to panic or worry", he said.

On beefing security measures at the ashram, another spokesperson said the spiritual guru generally does not prefer tight security and prefers to mingle and interact with his followers. But after this incident, the issue might have to be looked into, he said.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has popularised 'Sudarshan Kriya', a powerful breathing technique in India and overseas.

Damage-control by Maoists; say won't attack trains

KOLKATA/SARDIHA: The Maoists are in desperate damage-control mode, trying to distance themselves from a rogue unit of the PCPA militia that sabotaged the rails and caused the Gyaneshwari Express crash, killing 148 people. On Sunday, the rebels issued a statement denying their involvement in the massacre and urging the government to resume passenger train services at night that have been halted since the derailment.

Senior intelligence officers believe that the rebels might even murder the leaders of the village militia to repair the damage to their image. "In typical Maoist style, the rebels may execute the men responsible for the derailment, branding them class enemies or traitors," said a police officer, pointing out several recent murders where PCPA men were killed by Maoists. Maoist state committee member Akash issued a second press statement on the sabotage on Sunday, saying that they "never target the common people". "The government can resume train services on the section at night. No harm will be done from our side," he said.

However, it will be very difficult for the red brigade to wash their hands of the incident as it happened in their core zone and the modus operandi has all the hallmarks of a Maoist attack. PCPA, too, has denied any involvement in the sabotage, but police refuse to buy the rebels' claim of innocence.

Like other top state police officers, including state DGP Bhupinder Singh, ADG CID Raj Kanojia on Sunday hinted that the sabotage was the handiwork of Maoists or their local militia group active in the area.

On Sunday, a team of CID officers and forensic experts visited the accident site again and collected samples of the removed pandrol clips and stone chips from the track. The CID report is expected in a week. Kanojia confirmed that the rail track had been cut and did not mention any explosion. The FIR lodged with Jhargram GRP by the driver of Gyaneshwari Express was amended on Sunday to add 'murder', 'attempt to murder' and 'grievous hurt' charges.

Civil society stars to push Sonia's 'inclusive' agenda

NEW DELHI: UPA's 'Planning Commission' for its development agenda - the National Advisory Council - is in place. The Congress high command has chosen a constellation of individuals with formidable reputations to steer the social agenda in UPA's second term.

The watchdog, to be headed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, will include Madhab Gadgil, Harsh Mander, M S Swaminathan, Aruna Roy, Jean Dreze, N C Saxena, Farha Naqvi, Anu Aga, Narendra Jadhav, Deep Joshi and A K Shivkumar.

The civil society heavyweights are bound to push for an ambitious social sector agenda and bring to the fore several development issues that had receded to the backburner in the first year of the government.

With several advocates for a more inclusive growth policy and a wider social security net on board the NAC, sources said issues like food security, communal harmony, education and public health would move centrestage.

In its last avatar, the NAC had ushered in hugely successful social sector reforms such as introduction of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the Right to Information Act.

In its second coming, the council is expected to take up the Food Security Act as its foremost priority. With Mander, Dreze and Saxena on board, the bill, which was being tossed around in the government and being pruned to give it a more minimalist touch, is bound to become more expansive and cover a larger section of society.

The presence of Roy, one of the leading civil society voices on RTI and NREGA, will ensure that dilution of existing social schemes or sidetracking of key elements of these programmes are checked.

The presence of a Muslim woman entrepreneur, Anu Aga, will add another perspective to the discussions and policy-
directing documents that NAC was known for even in its first outing. Farha Naqvi's inclusion along with that of Planning Commission member Narendra Jadhav is expected to bring focus on education, with attention being given to gender, caste and minority issues.

The communal violence bill, pending for a while, is now bound to get priority listing besides issues of pubic health, water and sanitation securing greater impetus.

NAC, sources told TOI, is expected to be more aggressive in pursuing social security reforms and providing course correction to routine government lines as was noticed with NAC chairperson Sonia Gandhi's three interventions in the Food Security Bill.

With an influential section in government keen to keep FSA to its minimalist best, Sonia had repeatedly stepped in and nudged the debate closer to the agenda that the Congress manifesto as well as other political statements had laid out.

With a mix of individuals credited with out-of-the-box thinking and creative engineering of government policy to provide an inclusive growth regime, the party leadership is now bound to assert a strong 'aam aadmi' image as it had in the last regime.

The driver was among those killed.

Twenty-five of the injured have been admitted to Challanakeri hospital and three have been taken to a government hospital here.

Govt to resolve SEBI-IRDA spat: Parekh

Mumbai: The government will soon find an out-of-court solution to the turf war between two regulators, SEBI and IRDA, which has made India a 'laughing stock', top banker Deepak Parekh said.

At the same time, he hit out at the government for allowing the capital markets and insurance regulators to go to the courts, saying a rethink on the their fight over jurisdiction on Unit Linked Insurance Products would lead to a solution in the next few days.

Parekh, a key adviser to the government on various policy matters, however, replied in the negative when asked if the settlement was based on his counsel.

"Tell me, where in the world you see two regulators fighting... we have become a laughing stock," the HDFC Chairman told PTI in an interview, adding that the Finance Ministry would find a solution in the next few days and the court cases would be withdrawn.

Following a public spat between capital market regulator SEBI and insurance sector watchdog IRDA on which of the two should regulate ULIPs that invest heavily in stock and bond markets, the Finance Ministry last month announced that the issue should be resolved by an "appropriate court."

The issue has already reached the courts and the Supreme Court late last month posted the matter for hearing on July 8, following a petition filed by SEBI.

"Both SEBI and IRDA have good points in their favour.

(But), both will have to climb down and a solution lies somewhere in between," said Parekh, who has served as a member of various government appointed committees and advisory panels, including those related to financial services.

The spat broke out in early April when SEBI banned 14 life insurance companies from raising funds through ULIPs and with the very next day IRDA asking the companies to ignore the SEBI order and do business as usual.

These insurers included HDFC Standard Life, the life insurance venture of HDFC group, which is already engaged in mutual fund business through HDFC Mutual Fund.

"We are into both insurance and mutual fund business. We're suffering from the both sides and both the regulators have their own points (in this issue)," Parekh said.

"A decision will be taken by the Finance Ministry in the next few days. Probably, the government came to the feeling that the courts would take a long time (to resolve the issue).

The issue should not have gone to the court in the first place," he said.

After the two regulators petitioned Finance Ministry, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had said on April 12: "To resolve any ambiguity and to ensure smooth functioning in the market, the regulators have agreed to jointly seek a binding legal mandate from an appropriate court."

Rohit hits second successive ton, India crush Lanka

Rohit Sharma hammered his second successive ODI century as India crushed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in their second match to put their campaign back on track in the cricket tri-series here today.

Chasing 243, India made a rather slow start and lost both their openers inside 10 overs before one-down Virat Kohli (82) and Rohit (101 not out) resurrected the innings to help India romp home with 6.3 overs to spare at the Queens Sports Club.

Earlier, the tidy Indian howlers produced a disciplined effort to bundle out Sri Lanka for 242 after captain Suresh

Raina had opted to field. Today's win also marked Raina's first victory as captain.

Coming together in the 10th over, Kohli and Rohit added 154 runs from 168 balls for the third wicket to take the game away from Sri Lanka.

Rohit, who hit 114 against Zimbabwe in India's first match though for a lost cause, hit six fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 100-ball unbeaten innings, his second ODI century in 44th match.

He got a superb support from Kohli whose 82 came from 92 balls with the help of four boundaries.

After opening bowler Nuwan Kulasekara and Ajantha Mendis achieved early success by removing Murali Vijay (14) and Dinesh Karthik (18) respectively, the Sri Lankan bowlers were left high and dry with Kohli and Rohit stamping authority.

The duo initially dealt mostly in singles with occasional boundaries before opening up later on. They also did not allow the asking rate to jump over five.

Rohit took 60 balls to reach his fifty which came of a single off Ajantha Mendis in the 28th over and Kohli reached his seventh half-century an over later with a single off Dilhara Fernando.

Kohli, however, perished in the 38th over while trying to finish the game early. He came down the track to play a lofted shot off a Suraj Randiv delivery only to hole out to long-on fielder Dilhara Fernando.

When Kohli fell, India needed just 42 runs from more than 12 overs and Rohit ensured that they wrapped up the match without any hiccup.

Rohit took a four off Mendis in the 43rd over to reach his second successive ODI century while Raina (24 not out) hit the winning run in the next over.

India, who lost their opening match against Zimbabwe on Friday, play the hosts again in their next match on Thursday at Harare Sports Club.

Venus loses to Petrova at French Open

Venus Williams was beaten in the fourth round of the French Open by Russia's Nadia Petrova, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday.

Williams came into the tournament seeded No 2, behind her sister Serena, but Petrova spoilt the possibility of a sibling showdown in the final.

Petrova has been a nemesis for the Williams family lately -- she beat Serena in the third round at Madrid less than three weeks ago.

Justine Henin rallied in a winner-take-all set that seemed like a final, out-slugging Maria Sharapova 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The two former No 1s returned to centre court following an overnight suspension of the third-round showdown after two sets.

Then came Williams-Petrova, with both players bundled up on a damp, windy day.

Williams' celebrated corset was under wraps with a long-sleeve top over her black lace outfit while Petrova wore long sleeves and tights under a frilly skirt.
The Russian controlled rallies with steady play from the baseline and finished strong, a problem for her in the past.

She swept the final four games and wobbled only once, shanking an overhead shot when leading love-30 in the final game.

She collected herself and won the final two points, closing out the match with an emphatic forehand winner.

Serena wore her playing outfit while watching her sister's defeat from the stands. They were to team up in a doubles match later on Sunday.

Venus converted only one of seven break-point chances. In the second set she lost serve three times after taking a 2-love lead.

Petrova, seeded 19th, is a two-time semifinalist, but she's into the quarterfinals for the first time since 2005.

The victory was her first against Williams in their five meetings.

Williams came into the tournament with this year's best record on the women's tour, but tricky footing has always made clay her worst surface. In 14 French Open appearances, she reached the semifinals only once -- in 2002, when she lost to her sister in the final. She has advanced beyond the fourth round just once in the past six years.

Joining Petrova in the quarterfinals were No 3 Caroline Wozniacki, No 5 Elena Dementieva and No 17 Francesca Schiavone.

Wozniacki, enjoying her best run at Roland Garros, needed three hours to beat No 14 Flavia Pennetta 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-2. No 5 Elena Dementieva beat unseeded Chanelle Scheepers 6-1, 6-3. No 17 Francesca Schiavone defeated No 30 Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 6-4.

Mary Kom, Sarita strike gold at Asian Championship

Former champion Aswathi Mol settled for silver after losing the light heavy weight (81kg) final 0-5 to China's Wang Yanrui.

Mary Kom, who got a walkover into the finals after her semifinal opponent failed to turn up yesterday, defeated old rival Jong Ok of Korea 8-1 in the summit clash.

Mary Kom had to settle for the silver in the last edition of the event in Guwahati and the diminutive pin weight (46kg) boxer went one better this time.

Leading 2-1 in the opening round, Mary Kom didn't let Ok strike a single scoring blow in the next three rounds.

Death toll 131, may go up; Centre ready for CBI probe

Sardiha/New Delhi: The death toll in the Jnaneswari train carnage climbed to 131 on Saturday and the rescue workers feared that even after 38 hours, they were yet to take out several bodies from the badly mangled compartments.
“We have recovered 131 bodies from the debris. Our work is going on at full pace. It seems that there are more bodies still trapped under the debris. More than 100 bodies were sent to the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital,” said N S Nigam, District Magistrate, West Midnapore.

The body of the assistant driver of the goods train, Niranjan Singh, was taken out this afternoon as the crane which has been stationed at the accident site for the last 30 hours lifted the debris from his body. A portion of the crane, while lifting the debris of the goods train, collapsed at the site. “The portion of the crane collapsed in such a way that it could have led to casualties among the rescue workers. But luckily there was no rescue worker in that area,” said a senior police officer. The rescue work got delayed by several hours because of the crane collapse.

The derailment is all set to be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has concurred with the Railway Ministry’s demand seeking a CBI probe into the accident, which Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has attributed to a “political conspiracy”.

“We are in favour of it. The state government has also agreed to it. Once we get a formal approval from the state government, we’ll initiate the process,” Union Home Secretary G.K Pillai said when asked about whether the Centre had agreed to the Railways’ demand for a CBI probe.

As per government sources, Railway Board’s Member Traffic Vivek Sahai and Member Staff A K Goyal had met the Home Secretary on Friday and had conveyed Banerjee’s demand for a CBI probe into the derailment. The Home Secretary is learnt to have called up the West Bengal DGP asking whether the state government would agree for a CBI probe. Under the rules, the Centre can’t hand over a case to the CBI unless the state agrees .

After Maoists held the 2443A Special Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express hostage for close to seven hours near Jhargram in October last year, Mamata had asked the MHA to get the matter investigated saying that the Railway Ministry did not expect the West Bengal government to conduct a fair and just inquiry into the hijack. The demand was not accepted. In fact, Mamata had also demanded CBI probes into the October 21 train collision near Mathura and the death of an Assistant Executive Engineer in Jhalawar. Both these demands were also turned down.

What appears to have convinced the Centre about the merit in handing over this case to the CBI is the fact that the accident was engineered two days before the civic elections in West Bengal. Also, the cloud of uncertainty over the cause of the derailment and identities of its perpetrators appear to have made this case eligible for investigation by a Central agency.

Maoists were on spot, says DGP; there are more signs

While the Maoists have been trying to back off from taking responsibility for the train carnage near Sardiha, circumstantial evidence points to the involvement of the members of the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) and CPI-Maoists.

Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh said on Saturday that 10-12 Maoists had assembled at the accident site around midnight. “ We have identified the gang and the village from where they had come. It’s a known Maoist den and raids are continuing,” he said.

There were several other pointers to the Maoist involvement.

* The officer in charge of the Manikpara police station had turned up at the Sardiha station on Thursday afternoon to warn the station staff against possible Maoist strikes. The police had been tipped off about Maoist threats. The police team that got in touch with the Sardiha police station even identified some spots that should be kept under watch. “We had kept a watch on the area suggested by the police team but the actual sabotage took place at another spot, maybe because we had put that spot under watch,” said a railway official. Senior police officials also confirmed specific intelligence inputs about possible Maoist strikes.

* Police have got reports about some gangmen having been forced by the Maoists to remove pandrol clips from the railway tracks which caused the derailment of the Jnaneswari Express. The last train to pass the stretch was the Howrah-Hatia Express which passed Khemashuli-Sardiha stations at 12.44 am. There was a gap of merely 30 minutes to remove pandrol clips rom a stretch of about 40-50 metres. It needed experts to do it and the police are also investigating the names of some gangmen who were threatened by Maoists.

* After the goods train rammed into the derailed Jnaneswari Express, a passenger train running between Tatanagar and Kolaghat arrived at Sardiha station. It was about 1.50 am and the train had to be stopped at Sardiha as the goods train had left and by then rammed into the derailed train. A senior station official confirmed to The Sunday Express that the driver of the passenger train reported that he saw a group of about 15 walking past the tracks towards a jungle that leads to Banstala, a Maoist stronghold.

* In the Kharagpur-Jhargram stretch of the South Eastern Railway, four station areas are virtually a liberated zone for the Maoists—Khemashuli, Sardiha, Banstala and Jhargram. The Maoists can trigger such attacks easily at any stretch of this section surrounded by thick forest. In the past six months, the group has attempted four such attacks on important trains, including Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani, Steel Express, Howrah-Korapur Express and now Jnaneswari Express.

* The Maoists and PCAPA had called an indefinite blockade of road and rail routes to protest “excesses” by joint security forces. During such blockades and bandhs, the Maoists and the PCAPA are known for indulging in such terror activities to enforce their writ.

* The Sunday Express visited some tribal villages in the periphery of the accident site. The commanding officer of battalion of CRPF engaged in anti-Maoists operations in the area as well as state police sources admitted that raids to trace Maoists and for area domination were underway in these areas. Villagers in Jal Jali, Patharghata, Guimara, Akhrasole and some others said that the security forces had been to the villages in the wee hours of Friday and picked up men indiscriminately.

In one village, for instance, seven men were picked up merely on the suspicion that they had Maoists links. Kshsith Mahato, a school chowkidar, Manoranjan Mahato, a farmer, Basanta Mahato, a farmer, and Prasanta Mahato were taken into custody and allegedly beaten up on Friday. “What is their fault? Why should we, daily-wage earners, run after the cops to secure the release of our husbands with babies on our shoulders?” asked Renuka Mahato with tears in his eyes.

Monoranjan is yet to be released and she did not know where her husband is. The villagers said Rabindra mahato and Banamali Mahato were yet to be traced.

The PCAPA and the Maoists control these areas. And most probably, the retaliation came immediately on Friday.

No merger with Congress in future: Chiranjeevi

New Delhi: Telugu cine star and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) President Chiranjeevi on Saturday ruled out any merger with the Congress party in the future.

“The Congress has asked PRP to withdraw from Rajya Sabha polls,” said Chiranjeevi after his meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi at 10, Janpath.

“The PRP has allied with Congress only for Rajya Sabha polls,” he added The meeting gained significance after Congress MP and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajshekhar Reddy’s son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy defied the party orders and decided to go ahead with his planned ‘Odarpu Yatra,’ which caused a lot of violence in the Telangana region.

The Praja Rajyam Party, which has 18 MLAs in the 295-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly, is keen on contesting the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

The actor-turned politician was asked by the Congress High Command to come here for discussions to reach an understanding on the biennial Rajya Sabha polls, after he announced that his party would contest the election.

Other war on Afzal: Human rights vs Kashmiri cause

The debate over the mercy petition of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who has been sentenced to death, is already a raging political match between the Opposition BJP and the Congress. But even within the prison walls, Afzal is finding himself drawn into a tussle on how to allow his case to pan out — is it just about ‘human rights’ or should it be made into a larger political question around the Kashmir ‘cause’.

His lawyer N D Pancholi, a well-known rights activist and founder-member of the PUCL in 1973, finds himself in a confrontation with former co-accused (now acquitted) of the Parliament case, S A R Geelani, over the matter of representing Afzal.

Pancholi met Afzal in Tihar on Friday and emerged with a hand-written letter by Afzal, authorising him to follow his appeal for shifting him to Srinagar Prison.

Simultaneously, Geelani has put out another hand-written letter by Afzal, written on the same date, saying that Pancholi is not his advocate “as he had never represented him in court.”

The roots of the dispute are deeper and complex. A campaign to free Geelani, when this DU teacher was also an accused, was spearheaded by those he is now opposing. Nandita Haksar and Pancholi had also led the campaign to meet the then-President and ask for clemency for Afzal.

That was four years ago and the seeds of the dispute were sown, as Geelani insists, “Afzal did not approve of certain passages in the clemency petition. And that was the problem. I have nothing against Nandita Haksar, she has been very good to me.”

Sources say the debate is in the politics of how the Afzal matter is to be handled. Pancholi (who finally took Afzal’s wife Tabassum to the President) and Haksar say it is from a human rights perspective that the Afzal matter needs to be approached, keeping it free of using him as a symbol of the larger Kashmir cause.

While Geelani and his recently set up NGO, Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP), do not say so openly, they are keen to project Afzal as a martyr in the Kashmir cause, rather than have him appear as a surrendered militant, one who has confessed to the Indian state and one who has petitioned for clemency. Says Geelani, “We have this letter from Afzal now, he wants these people to stay away.”

Haksar, who was in the forefront of the campaign to free Geelani and then bat for him when he was freed and shot at outside her house, is now angry and saddened by the course of events. She says Pancholi’s credentials cannot be doubted: “He was not only a founding member of the PUCL, but also the secretary of Citizens for Democracy, when Jayprakash Narayan was its President. He was the first to visit Geelani in jail when he was arrested. He took up Afzal’s case pro-bono once the death penalty was awarded. Afzal is suffering because of the pressure being brought on him in jail now.”

Interestingly, it was under the name of the Society for Protection of Detainees and Prisoners’ Rights (SPDPR) set up in 2004, that the campaign to free Geelani was conducted. But soon afterward, says a founding member of SPDPR, Janaki Srinivasan, now based in Chandigarh, “it stopped functioning, things dried up. We then heard that another group had been set up”. The new body, CRPP, is now anxious to distance Pancholi from the Afzal case. Asserts Geelani, “It has 13 chapters, and people from Andhra, Kerala, Maharashtra and Kashmir, we have people from everywhere. It’s a larger platform.”

On Friday, human rights activists including Rajni Kothari and Surendra Mohan had come out in support of Pancholi, castigating Geelani for “creating a controversy on the matter and asking him to apologise to Pancholi.”

VIP flights force 3 jets to land with no fuel to spare

CHENNAI: Three days after the Mangalore aircrash, three planes that had been diverted from Delhi airport on account of VIP movement, had a narrow shave when they all but ran out of fuel above Jaipur airport. The three flights had more than 450 passengers on board at the time.

Wednesday's Jetlite flight JLL 108 from Mumbai landed with just enough fuel to remain airborne for three minutes. The Mumbai-Delhi Kingfisher flight IT 300 landed just 10 minutes before its fuel tank ran dry. Jet Airways 9W 2357 from Chennai made it onto the runway with fuel for just 13 minutes of flying time. Both Jet planes were Boeing 737s and carried 192 and 174 people each.

The Kingfisher plane was an Airbus 330 and had 158 people on board. Wednesday saw 11 flights diverted to Jaipur, Chandigarh and Lucknow, even as 20 others were forced to circle Delhi airport for an hour starting 9am. The airport was closed because of President Pratibha Patil's flight to China and Turkmenistan president Gurbanguly Berdimunha-medov's flight to Agra.

The tension built up for planes queuing to land at Jaipur as challenging weather - gusts of wind and a duststorm - worsened conditions already difficult because of the absence of approach radar to monitor flight movement.

Planes are supposed to carry enough fuel to fly to a nearby airport in case of an emergency but the uncertainty over the VIP planes' take-off had them circling in the air till they got to Jaipur with little fuel left. The pilots have filed 'flight safety reports' detailing the emergency situation to the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

VIP movement nearly caused an aviation disaster when three planes, with more than 450 passengers, nearly ran out of fuel when they were diverted from Delhi to Jaipur airport. The pilots of Jetlite flight JLL 108, Kingfisher flight IT 300 and Jet Airways 9W 2357 were caught unawares as there was no Notam (notice to airmen) about the closure of airspace until they reached Delhi.

Airports Authority of India authorities said the practice of issuing Notam during VIP movements has been stopped due to security reasons and Wednesday's flap was unforeseen. "Usually there is only a three-minute shutdown of airspace during VIP movement. But on Wednesday, the Turkmenistan president's flight got delayed because of bad weather in Agra, resulting in diversions and go-arounds," PK Mishra, AAI general manager, air traffic maintenance, told TOI.

The three flights were using up the final reserve fuel when they declared emergency. "The Kingfisher flight which first declared fuel emergency was allowed to land. The Jet Airlines flight, which had only 10 minutes of fuel left, declared emergency next, but it gave way to a Jetlite flight which radioed an emergency declaration," said a source.

AI won't tolerate any indiscipline: Patel

New Delhi: Asserting that "indiscipline" in Air India would not be tolerated, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Saturday said he had given full freedom to the management to take any step to deal with disruptions like the recent strike.
"I had made it very clear to the management that you have full freedom and you must do whatever is necessary in these circumstances. This (strike) type of gross indiscipline will not be tolerated," Patel told Karan Thapar in an interview for the CNN-IBN news channel.

Asked whether more employees would be sacked for going on strike, he said, "If they (airline management) feel, they are free to do it, we will not come into the picture."

He distanced the government from the airline management's decision to derecognise two unions and terminating the services of union leaders, saying it was for the management to take any decision.

Patel said the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines was a long-term process and there had been "opposition" from within and "systematic effort" was made to ensure that it did not succeed.

"I will tell you that there has been opposition from within and systematic effort to see that the merger does not succeed... by a lot of people in the organisation. Now some of the unions also have to be blamed for that," he said.

Accepting that merger was delayed but it was not a wrong step, he said merger is not a single day process. "It was envisaged as a three to five year process... to say that it is internally or inherently flawed is wrong.

"It has been delayed - Yes. The fact is, who has to make it work - the organisation. But I still feel, if these people do not make it work, they will be losers in the long run," Patel said, adding that the merger should not be blamed for all the problems of Air India.

"I would like to put across.... if there are any problems, if there are losses and if they are systemic issues.. please do not put one attribute of merger. That is another issue," he said.

"Even today, there are two streams in the organisation - one is domestic operations, which was earlier the Indian Airlines, and the other is Air India. But that doesn't mean that anything is fundamentally wrong with the orgainsation. It takes time for the whole pyramid to build," he said.

The Civil Aviation Minister said, "It is not that I conceived the merger. This merger discussion is going on in the Ministry from the days of J R D Tata. .. chances were taken but nothing really fructified. Eventually it happened."

Patel referred to the mergers of Jet Airways-Air Sahara, Air Deccan-Kingfisher and internationally Continental and United Airlines in the US and asserted that "merger per se is absolutely sound".

Asked if Air India was not worth reviving and what would convince him to "shut it down and consigning it to history", he said, "I cannot take the call for shutting it down and consigning it to history. Its a larger call that government of India has to take. ..Don't say that everything is wrong in Air India."

"You are raising a larger issue whether the government should be running the airlines or not ... running a public sector airline is far different from private sector running airlines".

Asked why the government was not ready to privatise it and hand it over to professional hands, he said, "There were attempts in the past... during the NDA regime, when they tried there were few takers and that is the reason why it didn't get privatised."

On whether new Air India COO Gustav Baldauf would be given a free hand to operate or would he face interference, Patel said, "Not at all. He will be (given freedom)... even today there is full freedom, do not think we run it from Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan".

Patel said the new COO and the independent Board of Directors were undertaking a lot of activism to revive the airlines. "They are free to do whatever they think in their wisdom is good for Air India."

Observing that there was a misconception that "everything happens out of the Ministry" in Air India, he said "unfortunately, for all the bad things that happen there we get blame. Its okay... I mean we are not absolving ourselves... we stand by but the fact is they have the autonomy and I wish they exercise it in the best interests of Air India."

2G scam: CBI to conduct 'impartial' probe

Chennai: CBI on Saturday asserted that it would undertake "a very impartial, correct and legal investigation" into the alleged 2G spectrum allocation scam over which Union IT Minister A Raja is entangled in a major controversy.
"The CBI has registered a case and we are undertaking investigation. Let me assure you CBI will do a very impartial, correct and legal investigation," CBI Director Ashwini Kumar told reporters here.

Kumar said CBI would not go by the opinions of individuals, media or anybody else in its probe into the spectrum controversy, adding, "whatever evidence comes it has to be legally admissible"

"We are not going to go by the opinions of individuals, media or anybody.. it has to be a legal investigation and we have to have legal evidence.. there has been a lot of media, public and Parliament attention" on this case, he said.

Stating that legally admissible evidence was important, the CBI chief said "we are doing that investigation and we will continue to do that."

To a query, Kumar said once the agency takes up investigation of a matter, it confines itself to the allegations made in the FIR and "if something mo e comes up, we can register another FIR."

I stand vindicated: Shoaib Malik

Dubai: Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik heaved a sigh of relief after the PCB appeals judge revoked his one-year ban, paving the way for his comeback to the national team.
Justice Irfan Qadir not only lifted the ban but also reduced the fine from two to one million rupees.

"I am very happy that with the blessings of Allah, my stand has been vindicated and all the baseless charges and allegations have been quashed," he said in a statement.

Malik was charged with indiscipline and punished by PCB enquiry committee, which probed into the team's disastrous Australian tour early this year.

The committee had handed out punishments to seven Pakistani players and barring Mohammed Yousuf, all appealed against the decision.

Malik said he was ready to get back to national team.

"As always, my commitment for the country and for my team continues to be 100 per cent. I look forward to focusing purely on my game and will be delighted to serve my country in whatever capacity my team needs me, as and when required," said Malik who is here after his marriage with Indian tennis star Sania Mirza.

Malik has been included among the 35-man probables for next month's Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and PCB will soon announce the team.

PCB arbitrator lifts 1-year ban on Shoaib Malik

A Pakistan Cricket Board-appointed appeals judge on Saturday lifted the one-year ban on former captain Shoaib Malik, saying the all-rounder, accused of being a "negative influence" in the past, is a changed man now.

Former High Court judge Irfan Qadir's decision came at the National Cricket Academy where he held his hearing in which Malik was represented by his lawyer.

The judge also reduced a fine on Malik from Rs two million to Rs one million.

"The board's legal advisor has reported to me that after monitoring Malik in the last three months they feel he has improved his behavior and attitude," Qadir told reporters.

"I have decided to uphold his appeal and lift the ban as the purpose of disciplinary action against players was to make them rethink about their careers," he said.

Malik, who is in Dubai after his marriage to Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, hailed the Qadir's decision, saying the ban was a slur on his career.

"The purpose of my appealing to the board was to clear this stigma against my name. The ban was a stigma for me and my family," Malik told 'Geo News'.

The PCB had banned Malik and all-rounder Rana Naved for 12 months and fined them Rs two million each in March for indiscipline on the tour of Australia.

The board also banned former captains Muhammad Yousuf and Younus Khan for indefinite periods and fined Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal on the recommendations of an inquiry committee report into the tour in March.

Leaked video recordings of the hearings revealed that most of the players including captain Shahid Afridi, former coach Intikhab Alam and manager Abdul Raquib blamed Malik for fanning intrigues and creating disharmony in the team.

PCB legal advisor Talib Rizvi said the ban was lifted because the board wanted these players to represent the country again after they reformed themselves.

The national selectors have included Malik and Younus in a list of 35 probables for the next month's Asia Cup and tour to England.

Rizvi said Malik is free to represent the country again.

The judge had also scheduled a hearing for Younus Khan whose lawyer Ahmed Qayyum was present at the hearing but could not give a decision after Qayyum refused to accept a decision behind closed doors and wanted the media to attend the proceedings.

Rizvi said the appeals judge has now scheduled the hearing for Younus on June 12 while the appeals of Afridi and the Akmal brothers would be heard on June 9.

The appeal of Rana Naved is due to be heard on June 19 but he is not included in the list of probables for the coming tournaments.

Jolted India seek revival against new-look Lankans

Bulawayo: Their pride dented by the embarrassing loss to Zimbabwe in the lung-opener, a jolted India will hope to revive their campaign against Sri Lanka in the second match of the cricket tri-series in Bulawayo on Sunday.
It was hardly the start Suresh Raina would have hoped for in his debut as captain as India lost by six wickets to the hosts yesterday with 10 balls to spare.

Missing their regular stars, India were given a rude shock by the Zimbabweans who chased down a rather stiff target of 285 with consummate ease.

Indian bowlers let down the team but the batting was not too impressive either and had it not been for Rohit Sharma's breezy 114 and Ravindra Jadeja's 61 after a top-order collapse, getting to 285 would have also been a difficult task.

"We need to work on our bowling and fielding department to come back against Sri Lanka," Raina said after the match.

Dinesh Karthik and Murali Vijay were always going to find it difficult to replicate the flying starts that India are so used to with Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir at the top.

The middle order looks alright with Raina, Rohit and Jadeja in good nick.

The bowling is, however, a worry as the team found out against Zimbabwe.

Umesh Yadav and Ashok Dinda failed to either take wickets or stem the run flow against lowly side while R Vinay Kumar proved expensive. Raina minced no words in expressing his disappointment after the match.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have also fielded a young team and have rested key players, prominent among them are regular skipper Kumar Sangakkara and the in-form Mahela Jayawardene.

Tillakaratne Dilshan is leading the side without having the services of senior players like Sanath Jayasuriya and Lasith Malinga. All-rounder Angelo Mathews is Dilshan's deputy on his maiden assignment as captain for an ODI series.

Muttiah Muralitharan, who was ruled out during the World Twenty20 due to a groin injury, is also not there in the side.

The new-look team features greenhorns like all-rounder Jeewan Mendis and left-handed batsman Lahiru Thirimanne.

The trio of opener Upul Tharanga, middle-order batsman Chamara Silva and fast bowler Dilhara Fernando, who were ignored for the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies, are the prominent names in the squad.

It seems an evenly-matched contests where two inexperienced sides face off but given the opening loss to Zimbabwe, India can hardly afford to relax.

After all, a tour meant to test India's bench strength could well become an embarrassment if the young side fails to rise to the occasion.

Serena survives funny turn, Roddick not amused by loss

Paris: Serena Williams pulled through with the aid of a doctor at the French Open on Saturday but there was no reviving Andy Roddick as he packed up his kit bag and headed off to find some grasscourts.

Top seed Williams shrugged off a funny turn midway through her third-round match against Russian teenager Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova before recovering her senses to win 6-1 1-6 6-2 and join sister Venus in the last 16.

Fellow American Roddick was trounced in straight sets by Teimuraz Gabashvili -- his misfiring game no match for the flashy Russian or the cool, breezy conditions that returned to Roland Garros after the glorious sunshine of Frantic Friday.

I fought through a couple of matches that were a little dicey. Today I got outplayed from the first ball, Roddick, who will now begin his preparations for Wimbledon, told reporters after his 6-4 6-4 6-2 defeat to a qualifier ranked 114 in the world rankings.

Roddick angrily threw his spare rackets to his entourage after dropping his serve in the seventh game, complaining about string tensions. By the time they returned to a chilly Court Suzamme Lenglen, it was virtually all over.

I felt like I wasn't getting much on the ball so I kind of threw them in and wanted some looser tensions, Roddick said. By the time I got them in I think I was down two breaks in the third. Little too late to experiment.

The 27-year-old's mood was not helped by the balls rolling into the wet tarpaulins used to cover the courts.

If a ball rolls through a puddle enough times, can you tell me what happens to it? Then when clay attaches to it, it doesn't get lighter...

Spain's David Ferrer also joined Roddick on the casualty list, the ninth seed surprisingly beaten in straight sets by Austrian Jurgen Melzer, who now faces Gabashvili for a place in the quarter-finals.

After Friday's champagne tennis when organisers got the tournament schedule back on track with a feast of top seeds in action, the middle weekend began with a hangover.

Hopes that home favourite Aravane Rezai would lift the mood evaporated when she lost what amounted to a sudden death shoot-out against Russia's Nadia Petrova.

Starting at 7-7 in the deciding third set after darkness interrupted a thrilling match the previous evening, 15th seed Rezai was back off court in 15 minutes after Petrova held her nerve to prevail 10-8.

Marion Bartoli also lost her third-round match against Israel's Shahar Peer to leave Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as the only home player left in the singles draw.

Peer will face Serena Williams for a quarter-final berth but at one stage Pavlyuchenkova looked the more likely winner of the day's opening match on Phillipe Chatrier court.

Williams lost her opening service game of the morning to the 18-year-old but rattled off the next six in what looked to be shaping up as gentle Saturday morning workout.

The 28-year-old, shooting for a 13th grand slam singles title, then slumped 5-0 down in the second set and called for the trainer and the doctor at the changeover.

After having her pulse taken and her temperature checked she emerged rather gingerly before losing the set.

She resisted some aggressive play early in the third and saved two break points before regaining control, clinching victory in one hour 48 minutes.

By reaching the fourth round Serena is guaranteed holding the world number one ranking from Venus, whatever happens in the rest of the tournament.

Two matches later on Saturday should get the pulse racing.

Four-times champions Rafael Nadal and Justine Henin both come up against former world number ones -- Nadal tangling with Lleyton Hewitt and Henin facing Maria Sharapova.

Maoist attack derails 13 coaches of Express train, 68 dead

JHARGRAM, West Bengal: At least 68 passengers of a Maharashtra-bound express train were killed early Friday and over 200 injured in a Maoist-backed attack which led to derailment of 13 coaches that were hit by a goods train coming from the opposite direction.
The bodies of the passengers were removed from the mangled remains of the ill-fated coaches of the Howrah-Kurla Lokmanya Tilak Gyaneshwari Super Deluxe Express and the injured taken out with the help of gas cutters, a south eastern railway spokesman said.

"The toll could go up," West Bengal home secretary Samar Ghosh said.

The Maoist-backed People's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) has claimed responsibility for the derailment of the train.

"The PCAPA have left two posters near the rail tracks clearly owning responsibility for the derailment of the Kurla-bound Gyaneswari Express," IGP (Law and Order) S Karpurakayastha said.

The posters read, "We earlier demanded withdrawal of the joint security forces from Jangalmahal (West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia) and end of CPM atrocities, but those demands were not met."

Another poster demanded immediate withdrawal of the joint forces from the area. Police have seized both posters.

The incident occurred at 1:30am when the train was running between Khemasoli and Sardiya stations, about 135 km from Jhargram, south eastern railway officials said.

Surojit Karpurokayastha said that according to preliminary investigation, fish plates were found removed at the derailment site.

Earlier, railway minister Mamata Banerjee said the derailment followed a blast apparently triggered by Maoists who are observing a 'black week'.

"We suspect Maoist hand behind the blast," Member (Traffic) Railway Board Vivek Sahai said.

He said the driver of the train heard a loud explosion after which the train derailed. Railways are investigating if the tracks were tampered with, he said.

5 of the 13 derailed coaches fell on an adjacent track and were hit by a goods train coming from the opposite direction, Additional Superintendent of Police, Jhargram, Mukesh Kumar said.

Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters were pressed into service at the accident spot to airlift some of the injured to the hospitals.

Banerjee, who reached the accident spot, said a patrol engine had passed through the area half an hour earlier, but the timing of the blast proved disastrous with a portion of the line being blown away.

She announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin of each of the dead and Rs 1 lakh for the injured.

This is the second Maoist attack on civilians this month. Naxals had blown up a civilian bus in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on May 17, killing at least 36 people, including 12 Special Police Officers.

The West Bengal home secretary said that the over 200 injured have been shifted to different hospitals and the condition of some of them is critical.

"Some of the critically injured people have been brought to Kolkata for surgical treatment," he said, adding that 30 of the bodies have been sent to various hospitals for post-mortem.

President Pratibha Patil, who is in China, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident. The Prime Minister announced Rs 2 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

South eastern railway spokesman Soumitra Majumdar said the train had 24 coaches. After the explosion, 13 including 10 sleeper coaches, derailed of which five were hit by the goods train coming on the opposite track. The derailment took place at a spot, 150 km from Kolkata.

An unreserved coach, the pantry car and luggage van also derailed, he said.

Relief officials used gas cutters to extricate trapped passengers and bodies from the mangled remains of the affected coaches. Passengers’ belongings lay strewn scattered on the tracks.

Angry passengers said the first signs of relief came only around 5 am, three-and-a-half hours after the incident.

Nine of the coaches which were not damaged in the blast took the injured and the other passengers to Kharagpur where they were admitted to hospital.

Anti-Maoist forces were at the spot and assisting the police and rescue personnel in extricating the bodies from four badly damaged sleeper coaches S-5, S-6, S-7 and S-8.

Helplines have been set up at Kharagpur -- (0322) 255751 and 255735, Howrah - (033) 26382217, besides a toll free number 10722.

Helplines have also been set up at Tatanagar (0657) 2290324, 2290074, 2290382, at Rourkela (0661) 2511155, Chakradharpur (06587) 238072 and Jharsuguda (06445) 270977.

Terrorists storm Lahore mosques; 30 feared dead

LAHORE: Heavily armed Taliban guerrillas on Friday stormed two mosques in this Pakistan city, killing at least 30 people and injuring many others, according to TV reports. The mosques of the minority Ahmadi sect were packed with about 1,500 worshippers.

The apparently coordinated attacks by two groups of terrorists, which began at around 1.45 pm local time, targeted the mosques in Garhi Shahu and Model Town areas of Lahore.

Witnesses said at least two terrorists wearing suicide vests blew themselves up at the mosque in Garhi Shahu. They said the attackers lobbed grenades and fired indiscriminately as they entered the two mosques.

TV channels reported that at least 30 people were killed and many others, including seven policemen, injured in the attacks. Among the injured was Superintendent of Police Haider Ashraf.

Television footage showed gunmen firing indiscriminately from the rooftop of one of the mosques. Gunfire could be heard as people ran to take cover outside the mosque.

A police official told reporters that among the terrorists involved in the Model Town attack "one terrorist is dead, one injured and one has been held".

Worried relatives of the worshippers who were trapped inside the mosques desperately tried to seek information about their fate.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Punjab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Suicide bombers struck at a market in Lahore city March 12, killing 45 and injuring over 100.

Jagan Reddy arrested

MAHABUBABAD (WARANGAL): Mahabubabad in Warangal district erupted in unprecedented violence on Friday as Kadapa MP Y S Jaganmohan Reddy stubbornly stuck to his Odarpu yatra schedule. One student Praful Raju, aged 20, was killed when gunmen of Congress leaders opened fire to disperse a mob who attacked former minister Konda Surekha and others at the Mahabubabad railway station waiting room.

Praful Raju was a Bahujan Student Federation activist who hailed from V S Lakshmipuram of Mahbubabad mandal. The bullet from a gunman's pistol pierced through his right ear and came out from the left ear, shattering his skull. He was declared brought dead at a private hospital.

Police arrested Jagan at Vangapalli station and he was being taken to Hyderabad. Warangal SP Shahnawaz Qasim announced that the yatra had been cancelled.

The Mahbubabad railway station resembled a war zone with stones strewn all over the place and doors and windows being broken. TV sets and announcement systems were also damaged in the incident. Section 144 was imposed in Mahbubabad.

While the police fired rubber pellets, gunmen of Congress leaders used their pistols to fire at the swelling crowd which went wild. Ten others were injured, two of whom are said to be critical.

As police began escorting Konda Surekha out of the station, she picked up a few stones and threw them at the agitated mob. Mahbubabad MLA M Kavitha and her father, former minister Redya Naik, who were also in the waiting room, were escorted to safety.

Tension had built up in Jangaon, Kesamudram, Nekkonda, Mahbubabad and other stations even as Jagan boarded the Inter-City Express at Secunderabad station at 7.45 am. Movement of 20 trains including the Satavahana, Kerala, Konark, AP Express were affected as pro-Telangana supporters squatted on the tracks.

Earlier, one BJP activist Nagaraju tried to end his life by slitting his throat with a blade in Jangaon railway station to protest Jagan's yatra. He was rushed to the hospital where his condition is said to be critical. Another pro-Telangana activist Md Shabbir poured kerosene on himself but was overpowered by police as he attempted immolation. Two RTC buses were set ablaze by pro-Telangana protestors.

Jagan decided to embark on the Odarpu (Consolation) yatra despite strict instructions from the Congress high command not to go ahead. While the Kadapa MP has consistently insisted that this is a personal tour, political overtones have brought the T-stir to a boil again. Jagan is an avowed united Andhra Pradesh supporter.

Jaya Bachchan rejects Mulayam's RS offer

In a surprise move, Jaya Bachchan has turned down her nomination for the Rajya Sabha by Samajwadi Party, which announced the candidature of its national spokesman Mohan Singh for the seat.

Party sources said today that Bachchan has refused to contest the Rajya Sabha election citing "family reasons".

The party leadership was surprised at her decision as she was renominated after being consulted, they said.

Canada 'deeply regrets' visa row with India

New Delhi: Canada on Friday expressed "deep regret" over the language used by its officials against Indian defence and security establishments, saying it has created "inaccurate impression" which does not reflect the position or policy of the Canadian government.

In a damage-control exercise, Canada's Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenney hailed the Indian defence and security institutions, saying they operate "under the framework of democratic processes and the rule of law."

Terming as "unfortunate" the incidents involving use of foul language by Canadian High Commission in visa rejection letters to some individuals, Kenney said, "This language, or the inaccurate impression it has created, in no way reflects the policy or position of the Government of Canada."

In a statement emailed from Ottawa, he said, "The Government of Canada, therefore, deeply regrets the recent incident in which letters drafted by public service officials during routine visa refusals to Indian nationals cast false aspersions on the legitimacy of work carried out by Indian defence and security institutions, which operate under the framework of democratic processes and the rule of law."

The comments came in the backdrop of an outrage in India over adverse comments made by Canadian High Commission officials here against Indian armed forces and intelligence establishment while rejecting visas of some senior serving and retired officials.

The Canadian High Commission has denied visas claiming that their organisations or they themselves have served in sensitive areas like Jammu and Kashmir and engaged in violence and human rights violations.

The External Affairs Ministry on Thursday had taken up the issue of denial of visa to Indian nationals with the Canadian High Commission.

Reportedly, the issue was taken up after the Union Home Ministry wrote a letter to Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao after a former Intelligence Bureau (IB) official was denied visa to Canada.

In his letter to Rao, Home Secretary G K Pillai has stated that the stance of the Canadian authorities is unacceptable and discriminatory.

Canada’s move comes less than a month before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visits that country for the G-8 and G-20 summits.

Post-Mumbai attack 100 was best: Tendulkar

Mumbai:Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar tonight rated the century he scored in Chennai against England that helped India chase 387 runs in the fourth innings soon after the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai as the best of his career.
"It was not about the Test match but about something which happened two weeks before that. Something that had happened in Mumbai. It was difficult to prepare for a Test (under those circumstances). It was gracious of England to come here," Tendulkar, who alongwith wife Anjali, hosted a fund-raising dinner for the 'Crusade against Cancer Foundation' here.

"There were all sorts of talks around and then suddenly all our focus was on the match. England dominated the match for almost four days before Virendra Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir brought us back into it," he recounted.

"Generally when we win, it is the groundsmen who run to congratulate us, but on that day the grounds-women rushed to congratulate us. It was just because of something that had numbed the nation," he said.

"By no means India winning a Test match could compensate the lives lost. But for our team, we had succeeded in bringing a fraction of a smile on the faces of the people. That is why the hundred in Chennai Test match will be the best (of my career)," Tendulkar said.

He scored an unbeaten 100 as India upset all calculations to score an unlikely six wicket victory over England while chasing a target of 387.

Tendulkar, who shared tit-bits of his life and answered questions by noted commentator Harsha Bhogle and the audience, said he had not given a thought to life after retirement as yet.

"As a child I had dreamt of playing for India and I am still living my dream. Hopefully, I am good enough to play for some more time. When I play cricket, the centre of focus should be cricket and nothing else. I may explore what I want to do when I retire from cricket. Right now I want to focus my energies on cricket," he added.

The champion cricketer, who made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 in Karachi, revealed he did not remember the first of his over 31,000 runs in international cricket as he was too nervous on the occasion.

"I don't remember my first run. The first match was a blur. I don't remember walking in. I was asking myself whether I belonged here. I was told by my seniors to spend sometime in the middle and luckily I could do it," he said.

Tendulkar said he did not regret quitting Twenty 20 internationals after playing just one match in this form of the game. "I made a decision in 2008 and will stick to that," he added.

He said one of the reasons why his personal life was not a material for gossip could be his simple lifestyle.

"Its perhaps to do with lifestyle. I came from a simple family. There were no major celebrations whenever I had a good performance. It was just putting sweets in front of god. That was in the childhood. It was an unwritten rule. Brother Ajit made sure it stayed that way," he added.

To a query, Tendulkar said the first page of the book he would write in the future would be about his family.

"The first page has to be my family. My brother is the reason I started playing cricket. My father, mother, sisters (it is with them) that my cricket started and it will end with my children," he added.

Tendulkar thanked Dr P Jagannath of the 'Crusade against Cancer foundation' and complimented his wife Anjali for making the crusade against cancer a success. "The kind of response we have seen is remarkable. If by donating generously one can help a cancer patient, I don't think anything is better than that," he said.

Meanwhile, Jagannath said that the overall donations received by the 'Crusade against Cancer foundation' had crossed over Rs 1.30 crore.

Rohit ton powers India vs Zim

Bulawayo: Rohit Sharma cracked his maiden ODI century as India overcame a mid-innings slump to post a commanding 285 for five against Zimbabwe in the opening match of the cricket tri-series here today.

Rohit, who cracked six fours and four sixes during his 119-ball innings, found an able ally in Ravindra Jadeja and the duo added 130 runs for the fifth wicket to guide India to a good total.

Jadeja remained unbeaten on run-a-ball 61, which he made with the help of five fours.

Electing to bat, India were off to a smooth start on a placid Queens Sports Club pitch with Murali Vijay (11) and Dinesh Karthik (22) forging a 56-run opening stand.

India suffered their first loss in the ninth over when Vijay was run out which was a combination of the batsman's laziness and Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor's brilliance.

Vijay was ambling towards the batting crease when Taylor collected a Prosper Utseya throw in front of the wicket and flicked it behind onto the stumps.

Next man in Virat Kohli's was a scoreless stay as the vice captain, without facing a ball, was beaten by an Elton Chigumbura throw.

Another four runs on the board and Karthik was back in the hut, falling to Utseya and leaving India in a spot of bother at 61 for three.

Captain Suresh Raina (37) then joined Rohit and it was the 67-run partnership between them that steadied the ship and took India past the 100-run mark.

Raina, who cracked two fours during his 53-ball innings, extended good support to Rohit in the middle overs.

Paceman Chris Mpofu broke the partnership by removing Raina in the 30th over as Raina rushed down the track only to edge a rising delivery to the wicketkeeper.

In Jadeja's company, Rohit continued the good work and his century came in the 47th over when he hit Ray Price out of the ground for a massive six.

At the fag end, Mpofu removed Rohit but Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan (11 off 5 balls) provided the late charge to take the score to 285.

For the hosts, Mpofu scalped two wickets for 63 while Utseya bagged one.

Sreesanth is wasting himself: Azhar

Kochi:
Not many have the talent of S Sreesanth but the temperamental pacer is wasting himself by not being consistent and fit enough, says former India skipper Mohd Azharuddin.

"He has got the natural swing but I think his talent is totally wasted. I think he needs to understand that he has to deliver and remain fit. So I do not like to see him waste his talent," Azharuddin told reporters.

"To be very honest, I think he should use his brain more.

With due respect to him, I think he is a very good bowler. I think he is one of the few bowlers who can swing the ball," he said.

Hoping that Sreesanth would take his comments in the right spirit, Azharuddin said the spunky bowler needs to work harder.

"He must not take it in a wrong way. I am saying all this only for his betterment. I think he needs to work hard as he is such a good bowler. Not many bowlers can swing the ball," he said.

Sreesanth's career has been marred by several disciplinary indiscretions and he has been in the firing line of the BCCI for losing his cool too often on the field.
