Congress conspiring to send me behind bars: Modi

A belligerent Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi said he was ready to go to jail if he was found to be involved in the 2002 riots in the state and accused Congress of hatching a conspiracy to put him behind bars.

In his first public response to the Supreme Court order directing the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe his alleged role and also of his administration in aiding and abetting the riots, Modi said he was not afraid of going behind bars for the people of the land.

"After three months I might be in jail. But people of Gujarat should remember one thing, that Modi will live for Gujarat and die for Gujarat," he said at a poll rally here.

The Apex court had ordered the SIT probe "within three months" into a fresh complaint regarding the post-Godhra riots.

"If people ask me if you want to go to jail or gallows, then I will say I want to be hanged so that I can be reborn again to serve my Gujarat," Modi said, adding, "there are conspiracies against me to send me to jail."

Modi said "Union minister Kapil Sibal had given a threat that if I did not stop talking against Congress I would end up in jail."

"Just after 15 days the order has come from the Supreme Court. What does this mean?. This is a Congress conspiracy to send me behind bars," Modi said.

"On the one hand a foreign relative of Sonia (Gandhi), Quattrocchi has been given a clean chit by CBI. Everybody knows who controls CBI. On the other hand conspiracy is formed to sent me, who is the son of Bharat Mata, to jail," he added.

CBI letting off Quattrocchi challenged in SC

NEW DELHI: An application was moved in the Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging the CBI's decision to take off the name of Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, a Bofors pay off case accused, from the list of most wanted persons.

The urgent application filed by advocate Ajay Agrawal sought the direction of the apex court
to stay the operation of any withdrawal of red corner notice against Quattrocchi who has not submitted himself to Indian court in connection with the Bofors case.

Agrawal, who had earlier moved the apex court in January 2006 against the defreezing of Quattrocchi's bank account in London, sought issuance of red corner notice again.

Agrwal said the Interpol should be informed immediately so that Quattrocchi could be nabbed and produced before Indian court.

Following a communication from the CBI, the Interpol has taken Quattrocchi's name off the red corner notice.

CBI had approached Attorney General Milon K Banerji last year for an opinion as to whether to continue with the red corner notice issued by Interpol against Quattrocchi as the notice has to be renewed every five years.

The Attorney General cited inability of CBI to seek Quattrocchi's extradition on two occasions - first in Malaysia in 2003 and then in Argentina in 2007 - and opined that the judgements in both the cases indicated that there was no good ground for extradition.

"....The warrant cannot remain in force forever. Therefore, the warrant of February 1997 would lose its validity, particularly in view CBI's successive failed attempts to get the accused extradited from Malaysia and recently from Argentina," Banerji said.

The advocate had alleged CBI has not placed before the court all the documents relating to Quattrocchi's extradition from Argentina. He had alleged the government had "deliberately" not tried hard to get the Italian businessman extradited.

The advocate had sought disclosure of confidential material, including opinions of CBI and law officers of the Centre, which allegedly facilitated the rejection of India's request for Quattrocchi's extradition.

He had claimed the Indian authorities had concealed from the Argentine court that the Supreme Court here has already admitted a petition challenging the Delhi High Court's verdict quashing charges against other accused in the case.

Agrawal had filed the appeal against the May 31, 2005, judgement of the High Court after CBI had failed to approach the apex court within the mandatory 90-day period.

The High Court had quashed the charges after Additional Solictor General Bhagwan Dutta had conceded that CBI was unable to get either the authenticated or originals of Swiss documents on the basis of which the investigating agency had proceeded against the accused.

CBI has not filed any appeal against the High Court verdict. Agrawal has also filed a contempt petition against former CBI Director Vijay Shanker for allegedly misleading the court over the extradition proceedings initiated against the Italian businessman.

Pakistan jets bomb Taliban hideouts in Buner

PESHAWAR(Pakistan): Fighter jets began bombing Taliban hideouts in a district near the Pakistani capital on Tuesday, a military spokesman said,Pak offensive against Taliban.

signalling an expansion of an offensive against militants seemingly emboldened by a controversial peace deal.

Ground troops also are preparing to enter Buner district, said Maj. Nasir Khan, adding there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Taliban from the neighbouring Swat Valley alarmed the world this month when they entered Buner by the hundreds and began setting up checkpoints, patrolling streets and warning locals to abide by strict interpretations of Islam.

Buner lies about 60 miles (100 kilometers) from Islamabad, and the Taliban's foray prompted major concern from the US., which urged Pakistani officials to tackle the threat head-on.

Though they denied they were responding to outside pressure, Pakistani officials in recent days issued stern warnings against the Buner infiltrators, while launching a separate offensive against militants in Lower Dir, another district covered by the peace deal.

The deal imposes Islamic law in those areas in exchange for peace with militants who have waged a violent two-year campaign in the Swat Valley. It apparently emboldened the Swat militants to go beyond the valley's borders, at least under the guise of enforcing Islamic law.

Many of the Taliban were reported to have left Buner starting on Friday. But Interior Minister Rehman Malik said earlier on Tuesday that around 450 militants remained there and he warned them to get out or the government would take action.

Kasab is an adult, doctors tell court

MUMBAI: Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive after the 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai, is over 20, according to a medical report submitted here on Tuesday before the special court hearing the terror attacks trial.

Special judge M L Tahilyani, who had ordered the medical test last Friday to determine Kasab's age, will give his ruling on the matter on Wednesday, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told reporters after Tuesday's hearing.

The order to carry out the medical test had come after Kasab claimed in court that he was below 18 and should be tried in a court meant for juveniles.

In case medical tests had proven Kasab was a juvenile, his case would have been referred to a juvenile court for trial under the Juvenile Justice Act which provides for maximum punishment of three years.

The medical report submitted in court Tuesday is based on two separate tests conducted at Mumbai's Sir J.J. Hospital. Kasab underwent a dental and ossification (bone test) to determine his age.

The tests have revealed that Kasab was not a minor - as claimed earlier through his lawyer S G Abbas Kazmi - at the time of the Nov 26, 2008 attacks.

Apart from the medical test, two witnesses testified in court in the matter Tuesday. Swati Sathe, superintendent of the Arthur Roadd central jail where Kasab is being kept, told the judge that at the time of his admission, Kasab had told her he was 21 years old.

The doctor at Mumbai's Nair hospital who had treated Kasab on Nov 27 last year also told the court that at that time, Kasab had said he was 21 years old. The doctor was identified only as Raghavan.

In view of the confusion created by Kasab's claims, the special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam had moved an application last week seeking directions from judge Tahilyani to medically verify the age of the accused.

Accepting the application, Tahilyani had ordered that the medical reports should be submitted on Tuesday.

Nikam had told the court Kasab had given his age as 21 on three different occasions - once to the police and jail authorities, once to the doctor who examined him and again to the magistrate before whom he recorded his confession statement.

Moreover, Nikam said that the prosecution had other evidences to prove that Kasab was not a minor.

Terming the matter as a 'delay tactic', he had sought the court's directions on settling Kasab's age issue finally since the prosecution wanted to frame the charges against Kasab.

Man who noticed Ambani chopper 'sabotage' found dead in Mumbai

Mumbai: The man who discovered an alleged attempt to sabotage industrialist Anil Ambani's helicopter last week, has been found dead under mysterious circumstances.

Bharat Borge's body was found near a railway track in Mumbai.

Police discovered Borge's body between Vile Parle and Andheri railway tracks on Wednesday morning.

Police suspect Borge either committed suicide or met with an accident. Borge, a technician with Airworks India Engineering Pvt Ltd, was one of the four people who had access to Ambani’s chopper.

The alleged sabotage and a possible threat to Ambani's life was unearthed last week, when pebbles and mud were found in the gear box of his helicopter, hours before he was to take off.

The debris inside the gear box fuel tank could have led to a major disaster if undetected and the chopper had taken flight.

On April 24, Ambani filed a complaint alleging his Bell 412 seven-seater helicopter had been sabotaged.

He filed the complaint with the Sahar Police Station, near the airport, in the evening.

Two persons were arrested after mud and pebbles were found in the gearbox of the helicopter.

The Mumbai police crime branch started investigations on Saturday. "We have got the relevant case papers this morning. We are studying it and our own investigations have begun," Joint Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria told reported.

He added there are no further detentions or suspects in addition to the preliminary investigations carried out by the Santa Cruz police Station.

"We shall examine all aspects of the case and act accordingly," Maria said.

The Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) had on Friday evening shot off a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Home Minister Jayant Patil and other top bureaucrats and police officials, speaking of "a conspiracy to kill its chairman Mr. Anil Ambani".

Following the strongly-worded letter, the state government decided to hand the matter to the Crime Branch, which has taken over the case from the Stanta Cruz police.

ADAG's angry reaction was prompted by the fact that Ambani and a team of nine top officials of Reliance Infocomm were scheduled to fly in the chopper the next day from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, a 20-minute flight.

Stunned by the ADAG charges of the possible involvement of its staffers, Air Works Engineering India Pvt Ltd on Saturday enhanced security and personnel procedures at its Santa Cruz facility, according to a statement here Saturday.

Wipro BPO to hire 1200

HYDERABAD: Despite the economic slowdown, Wipro BPO, the business process outsourcing division of IT giant Wipro Technologies, is hiring personn
el and expanding its operations globally, a top official said.

"For the last six months, we have been hearing depressing news about people losing jobs and companies resorting to cost-cutting measures but we are still looking for people," Wipro BPO head Ashutosh Vaidya said.

The company plans to expand its BPO facility in Hyderabad by recruiting 1,000 to 1,200 people over the next six to eight months, he said. At present, 3,150 people are working at the Hyderabad facility.

Wipro, which has its operations in 14 locations in India and abroad, currently employs 22,600. On an average, it is adding 8,000 to 10,000 employees a year, Vaidya added.

Wipro BPO aims to tap the talent pool in Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. The selected candidates undergo 90 days of training, with focus on communication, technical and process-specific training.

Wipro, which got into the BPO business in 2001-02 with five clients, now has 51 clients. The revenues increased from $11 million in 2001-02 to $290 million in 2007-08.

Vaidya said while the recession had some impact on the BPO industry, it would not be there for long as companies were choosing outsourcing as the best way of cutting costs.

Nokia to cut 400 more jobs

MONACO: Nokia Oyj, the world's biggest mobile phone maker, said on Tuesday it would reduce investment in creating new services, helping it to cu
t further 450 jobs.

Nokia, which made its first ever quarterly pretax loss in January-March, is cutting annual costs at its key handset unit alone by more than 700 million euros ($911 million) to counter plunging demand.

To cope with slowing phone demand Nokia is building a new business from mobile Internet services -- like games or maps -- but has scaled back investment plans due to the slowdown.

Nokia said it will “focus investments on fewer initiatives and increase the use of common enablers across certain services.” “We are moving into Ovi, into a platform strategy," Tero Ojanpera, head of the entertainment and communities operations at Nokia said.

Nokia said the 450 job cuts would also involve internal IT unit and industry collaboration activities. It has so far slashed 3,000 jobs across the organisation. The overall mobile phone market is expected to shrink 10 per cent this year, as consumers rein in spending and handset sellers try to clear out unsold phones.

WC 2011: India gets 29 matches

Mumbai, April 28: Soon after stripping Pakistan of the hosting rights of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, the game’s governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday finalised venues and dates for the mega event of the gentleman’s game.

The 10th edition of the World Cup was initially to be co-hosted by India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. However, recent bomb blasts and terror attacks in Pakistan raised security concerns in the cricketing fraternity and the ICC had taken a decision to shift matches from there.

ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat specified that the decision was taken in the wake of the March 2009 terror attack on Sri Lankan cricket players in Lahore. They finally decided that India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be the co-hosts of the jumbo championship. The ICC also decided today to shift the secretariat from Lahore in Pakistan to Mumbai (India).

Addressing a press conference here, Lorgat said that India will host 29 matches in eight venues, Sri Lanka would host 12 matches in three venues and Bangladesh would host eight matches in two venues, including the opener on February 19, 2011. He added that in all, 49 matches would be played at 13 venues in three countries.

The inaugural ceremony too is scheduled to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh on February 18.

India and Sri Lanka have been chosen to host a semi-final each, with India getting the ultimate honour to host the grand finale.

Delhi Dare Devils VS Royal Challengers

NEW DELHI: Delhi Daredevils captain Virender Sehwag won the toss and chose to bat first against Rajasthan Royals in the 18th match of the second
edition of the Indian Premier League at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Tuesday.

The manner in which Sehwag's side has been marching ahead, there's little doubt now that they are among the firm favourites to win this edition of the IPL.

Shane Warne's defending champions are somewhat off the boil in this edition as the team didn't click with the ball or the bat in Sunday's clash with Kings XI Punjab. The loss was another setback to what is already a poor start.

While Warne may have that unique ability to keep pulling his side out from all the mess they get into, drubbing Team Delhi won't be any easy task.

For a team that has Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir as openers but has not relied on the duo so far, there is a belligerent middle-order in place taking care of the affairs. Warne's worry here is that if the openers click - and there's no reason why they shouldn't - things could just turn far more messy.

In the first match, Daniel Vettori claimed three wickets while Sehwag took care of the batting department in a truncated outing. In the second game, AB de Villiers struck form with the tournament's first century, and in their third victory, Tillakaratne Dilshan led the side to an enthralling win.

For the skipper, it can hardly get better than having his premier overseas cricketers giving their best.

And Warne has more than a problem at his hands. Graeme Smith is yet to get into his own, Shane Watson and Sohail Tanvir are missing and his T20 experts Rob Quiney and Dmitri Mascarenhas haven't exactly struck form as yet.

The only cricketer Jaipur's batting have been riding on is Yusuf Pathan and knowing Sehwag, he's the one Delhi will be targeting.

Teams:

Delhi Daredevils: Virender Sehwag (Capt.), Gautam Gambhir, Tillakaratne Dilshan, AB de Villiers, Dinesh Karthik, Mithun Manhas, Daniel Vettori, Amit Mishra, Pradeep Sangwan, Ashish Nehra, Dirk Nannes.

Rajasthan Royals: Shane Warne (Capt.), Graeme Smith, Swapnil Asnodkar, Rob Quiney, Yusuf Pathan, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Ravindra Jadeja, Paul Valthaty, Mahesh Rawat, Munaf Patel, Kamran Khan.

Lankan army 6 sq km away from last LTTE hideout

COLOMBO: Making a final push to overrun the last patch of LTTE-held territory, Sri Lankan forces on Sunday captured strategic Vlayarmadam area and encircled remaining 6 sq km strip of land which is the possible hideout of LTTE Supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran and his top aides.

"Sri Lankan soldiers have liberated Valayarmadam area and so far rescued 500 civilians held hostage by LTTE from there," the defence ministry said on Sunday.

According to the defence sources, army commandos and special forces soldiers backed by infantrymen of 10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry and 12 Gemunu Watch last evening entered into Valayarmadam area, located just 6 km from Vellamullivaikkal, the last remaining LTTE hideout.

"Troops declared the area fully secured this morning," the ministry said.

Meanwhile, LTTE's political head B Nadesan has denied the charges that his group was forcibly recruiting children as fighters to confront the government forces.

"LTTE political head B Nadesan has categorically denied recruitment and arming children as young as 12 to fight alongside the Tigers as alleged by news reports citing the UN," the pro-rebel Tamilnet website said.

The UN Colombo office accusation coincides with the visit of the Emergency Relief Coordinator of the UN and Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes.

LTTE chief Prabhakaran no terrorist: S Ramadoss

Chennai, April 26: A day after AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa did a U-turn and demanded a separate "Tamil Eelam" in Sri Lanka, another regional party in Tamil Nadu on Sunday came out in support of the Tamil Tigers.

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S Ramadoss described Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) chief V Prabhakaran as a leader of a liberation movement not a terrorist.

Ramadoss said Prabhakaran was fighting for the Tamils in Sri Lanka, adding that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, former South African president Nelson Mandela and Palestinian movement leader Yasser Arafat were also at one point of time labelled as terrorists.

The PMK founder also castigated the Indian government over the issue, saying it had become clear that India itself was waging a war against Tamils by supporting the Sri Lankan offensive.

India had on Friday sent National Security Advisor MK Narayanan and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon to Colombo to meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to press for cessation of hostilities.

Jayalalithaa had on Saturday night said that only a separate "Tamil Eelam" (homeland for Tamils) in Sri Lanka would solve the decades long ethnic strife in the island nation.

"We have been asking for a ceasefire. It is not enough. Sri Lankan Tamils should get justice and lead a normal life. They should get all rights that are available to Sinhalese. For this, a separate Eelam is the only way," Jayalalithaa said in a major shift in her party's stand on the issue.

AIADMK's manifesto had said it would press for separate Eelam if moves for devolution of powers in Tamil-dominated provinces failed to give equal status to the Tamils.

But her remarks yesterday reflected a change in the party's position on the issue which has come to occupy the centrestage in the run-up to the May 13 Lok Sabha polls with political parties raising the pitch apparently worried about the electoral fallout of the humanitarian crisis in the war zone.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M Karunanidhi had also recently said that the LTTE chief was not a terrorist, but later retracted his statement in the wake of criticism.

Taliban still in Buner despite deal to withdraw: Report

ISLAMABAD:
Some heavily armed Taliban militants who entered the strategic Buner district near the Pakistani capital from Swat valley are still in the area despite a deal with local authorities for their withdrawal, a media report said on Sunday.

About 10% of the hundreds of Taliban who came to Buner from Swat are still present in the area while the local Taliban from the district are patrolling some parts of the district, Geo News channel quoted its sources as saying on Sunday.

Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan had on Saturday claimed that all the militants from Swat had withdrawn from Buner, located 100 km from Islamabad. He also said the local Taliban of Buner would remain in the area.

Taliban fighters began pulling out of Buner on Saturday after the Pakistan army began preparing for possible operations against them.

Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani warned that his force would root out terrorism and not allow militants to dictate terms to the government.

Meanwhile, security forces on Sunday arrested two persons and seized 475 kg of explosives and 450 fuses from them in Swabi district, which is located near Buner.

Though routine activities are gradually resuming in Buner, courts in the district continue to be closed, causing problems for hundreds of people. Markets have reopened and business activity too has resumed.

About 300 paramilitary Frontier Constabulary troops have been sent to Buner to restore order. They have been deployed at police stations which had been occupied by the Taliban.

Hundreds of Taliban militants entered Buner earlier this month and set up check posts, barred women from public places and asked people not to indulge in what they described as "un-Islamic activities".

They also seized property, looted dozens of vehicles from government and NGO offices and closed all civil courts.

Kasab can read books, but not newspapers: Court

Mumbai :A special court has rejected the plea of Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone gunman arrested for the Mumbai terror attacks, to have access to newspapers in jail but allowed his lawyer to lend him some books for reading.

"I informed the court that Kasab wanted to read newspapers in jail but the plea was not considered. Instead the court suggested that I could lend some story books to him," Kasab's lawyer Abbas Kazmi said.

As Kasab is well versed in Urdu, Kazmi said, he was planning to give him books in that language. "The books will be given to the jailor who in turn will on pass them to Kasab," the 54-year-old Mumbai lawyer said. To a question, Kazmi said the 26/11 attacks accused likes to read stories which have "entertainment value."

On the daily schedule of Kasab, Kazmi said he was in solitary confinement and was on his own. The lawyer said he had been given a short time to prepare for arguments on charges proposed by prosecution against Kasab.

On May 2, he has to give his submissions after going through the 11,000-page chargesheet. "I am not ready yet," Kazmi said. Kasab's lawyer further said that he was devoting most of his time to this case after court hours and that he is not taking up any other matter.

To a question about visit of Kasab's mother, Kazmi said he had no knowledge of any such development and also Kasab had not talked to him about his family or personal matters. Kazmi said Kasab was cooperating with him and his reponse to the legal queries has been good. But he had no idea how long will the trial continue. "Much would depend on the prosecution and the witnesses they would examine".

Pak 'most dangerous country' of the world: US Rep leader

Washington:Stating that Pakistan is the "most dangerous country" of the world, a top Republican leader said that the rapidly increasing influence of the

Taliban in that country may break its back.

"I think, personally, that Pakistan is the most dangerous country in the world," Republican leader and the former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich told a local news channel in an interview. Gingrich said Pakistan today has more nuclear weapons available than Iran or Korea will have in a decade. "We don't know what's going to happen there," he said. "What people have to worry about is not that the Taliban is going to come out in the open field with an army. What they have to worry about is that every week that goes by more and more Islamist extremists in the cities are migrating to join the Taliban. And you may presently see an explosion in the cities," Gingrich argued.

He said Pakistan is now a country that has nuclear weapons and "hates" India, next door, "doesn't particularly" like Afghanistan because its President Hamid Karzai was educated in India and has a deep distrust of the US. "I think people have to understand how dangerous this is," he added.

Worried about what's going to happen in Pakistan, Gingrich said: "None of the indicators are good. There's no indicator that we are gaining ground in Pakistan. If you lose Pakistan, you're going to lose Afghanistan because you have no corridor to get there. You have no capacity to sustain your logistics."

TCS to focus on offshoring, to move many staff back to India

MUMBAI: As part of cost-cutting measures, India's
largest outsourcing firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on Sunday said that it will relocate staff abroad into India.

"The company follows an onsite-offshore model. We will focus to do more work in India because it helps in saving cost and efficiency," TCS chief operating officer N Chandrasekaran said.

However, the company would continue to do work onshore and relocation did not mean that it was winding up its operations abroad.

The company, which tried out its relocation in January-March this year, gained significantly in the last quarter of 2008-09.

In Q4, the company brought back its US staff to India resulting in a cost saving of Rs 121 crore. The company did not give any figures on how many staff were brought back.

The relocation of staff could be in thousands, he said.

PSU banks on hiring spree, to hire 30,000 in FY'10

NEW DELHI: Public sector banks will hire 30,000 personnel during 2009-10, even as India Inc, facing the heat of the global financial meltdown, has put a virtual halt on recruitment.

"As per the preliminary estimates, public sector banks are expected to hire over 30,000 people during 2009-10," Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) director M Balachandran said.

The institute, promoted by PSU banks and the Reserve Bank, has been rendering assistance to financial sector in the activities of employees' selection, promotion and placement.

A large number of employment opportunities have emerged in the banking sector owing to branch expansion by various lenders, business growth and aggressive marketing, he said.

Balachandran, former chairman and managing director of the Bank of India, said recruitment would also fill up the gap created due to large scale of superannuation in many banks.

At the same time, in bid to increase fee-based income banks have started activities like distribution insurance policies, mutual fund schemes and other financial products.

This has created need to recruit some specialised manpower in those segment, he added.

Mittal poorer by £16.9 bn, still richest man in UK

Non-Resident Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal continues to be the richest man in the UK in 2009, despite his wealth dwindling by £ 16.9 billion in a year owing to the global recession, The Sunday Times Rich List claimed on Sunday.

India's Mukesh and Anil Ambani have been jointly ranked as the sixth richest in the world with a fortune of £ 20.5 billion.

Roman Abramovich, the Russian owner of Chelsea Football Club, keeps his position at second on the list despite also suffering from the downturn. His fortune has fallen to £ 7 billion from £ 11.7 billion.

America's the Walton family of Wal-Mart is the richest in the world -- with £ 52.3 billion. Lakshmi Mittal is 21st richest in the world.

Leading NRI entrepreneur Lord Swraj Paul, Chairman of the Caparo Group, has seen his wealth dropping by £ 1 billion in 2008 -- from £ 1.5 billion to £ 500 million now, the paper reported.

The recession has wiped off £ 155 billion from the fortunes of Britain's 1,000 richest people. The unprecedented collapse is the biggest annual fall since the Rich List was first compiled 21 years ago, the paper said.

The number of billionaires in the Rich List has fallen from 75 in 2008 to 43 in 2009. Between them, people ranked in the top 100 lost £ 93 billion. Only three saw their wealth increase.

Fifty eight-year-old Mittal has sustained losses of more than three times the level of Roman Abramovich, his nearest rival in the down-shifting stakes.

Stock market turmoil and fears of declining demand for steel have shrunk the value of the Mittal family stake in Arcelor Mittal from a record £ 33 million last June to about £ 8.2 billion.

Mittal built his empire by acquiring and turning round ailing former state-owned mills across the world. He stunned the industry in 2006 with an audacious takeover bid for Arcelor, the biggest steel maker in the world after his own Mittal Steel, and secured the Luxembourg-based operation for £ 17.8 billion after an acrimonious battle.

The Rich List said, "To the family's £ 8.2 billion company stake we add £ 2.6 billion for dividends and property. Dividends from their steel interests were £ 1.38 billion in 2004 alone. In 2007, Arcelor Mittal paid £ 942 million to the family in dividends and to buy back shares.

"The figure for 2008 will be about £ 663 million. A separate investment portfolio is worth about £ 570 million. We reckon the family fortune has fallen by £ 16.9 billion."

The Duke of Westminster is the richest Briton and continues to occupy third position overall, next to Lakshmi Mittal and Roman Abramovich, with a fortune of £ 6.5 billion.

Besides Mittal, others listed in the category of Britain's 25 richest Asian millionaires are Anil Agarwal (mining - £ 600 million), Anurag Dikshit (internet gambling £ 559 million), Lord Paul and family (industry £ 500 million), Sir Anwar Pervez and family (Cash & Carry £ 489 million), Felix Grovit (Foreign exchange £ 430 million), Bhikhu and Vijay Patel (Pharmaceuticals £ 370 million) among others.

Jet Airlines Chairman Naresh Goyal and family has fortune worth £ 182 million, while Dr Kartar and Tej Lalvani (food supplements) has wealth worth £ 120 million.

Over the past five years the bottom line required for a place in the Rich List has risen from £ 30 million in 2003 to £ 80 million in 2008. Now a fortune of £ 55 million is sufficient to make the top 1,000.

The Rich List's combined wealth adds up to £ 258.27 billion, compared with £ 412.8 billion in 2008.

Meanwhile, the number of women in the top 1,000 has increased in 2009 to a record 100. A number of them have built up their own businesses, 20 such as Carole Nash, who carved out a niche insuring motorbikes and has made a fortune

Deccan Chargers beat Mumbai Indians by 12 runs

DURBAN: If the bowlers can’t get you, the strategy break will. Quite a few have fallen to the strategy break, and now it was the turn of the great Sachin Tendulkar.

The master was having a party in the middle, taking heavy toll of the Team Hyderabad bowlers and the target of 169 was looking paltry for the Mumbai Indians.

But the seven-and-a-half minute break at the end of the 10th over took away all the momentum and Tendulkar looked like a player starting from scratch.

He missed the first ball after the break, edged the second, and gave an easy catch to Herschelle Gibbs at extra-cover in the third off Pragyan Ojha and Mumbai lost the plot completely thereon to lose by 12 runs.

And left-arm spinner Ojha (4-21) got the game by the scruff of the neck to dismiss Shikhar Dhawan and JP Duminy (47) in quick succession.

The left-armer fooled the batsmen with subtle changes in flight and Duminy, getting just a little bogged down, tried to heave a full-toss and gave a catch to deep extra-cover.

Once Duminy left, Dwayne Bravo singlehandedly took the game to the opposition camp, playing those flicks to supreme dexterity, and it was down to 26 off the last two.

But Fidel Edwards had the last laugh when he got one to swing in which struck Bravo plumb in front and the game was over for Mumbai.

There was serious jubilation in the Hyderabad camp the moment the last ball was bowled. They are not only on top of the table, but are looking serious contenders after the disappointment of last season. Their batting, too, is coming good, as was evident on Saturday.

Herschelle Gibbs (58 off 44 balls) showed what he is capable of when he launched into the Mumbai attack. He made room for himself, and hit over the top as the runs flowed in the initial overs.

He was brilliantly backed up Adam Gichrist (35). Rohit Sharma (35), too, kept it going.

Royal Challengers look to gain momentum against Delhi

PORT ELIZABETH: High on confidence after two successive victories, Delhi Daredevils will strive to continue with the winning momentum while a struggling Royal Challengers Bangalore will try to recapture the lost sheen they started with when the two teams lock horns in an Indian Premier League match on Sunday.

The Delhi team, by virtue of their back-to-back wins against Kings XI Punjab and last year's runner-up Chennai Super Kings, is comfortably placed second in the points tally.

In contrast, the Vijay Mallya-owned Bangalore team tamed defending champions Rajasthan Royals in their campaign-opener comprehensively but since then lacking the consistency and languishing on the seventh slot in the tally after losing three encounters on the trot.

The Delhi side will surely count upon their formidable batting line-up with skipper Virender Sehwag joining hands with his Team India opening partner Gautam Gambhir to start the innings, followed by South Africa batsman AB de Villers.

The Protea played a beacon with his 54-ball 105 to guide Daredevils to victory in the last match against Chennai side and the team will expect another blistering knock from the cricketer.

With cricketers like Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan and New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori figuring in the middle order besides 'keeper Dinesh Kaarthick and Bengal boy Manoj Tiwary, Delhi batting line-up will be a hard nut to crack.

In bowling department, Delhi’s Pradeep Sangwan who scalped three for 28 in last outing, will find support from the new-ball pair of Australian Dirk Nannes and India-discard Ashish Nehra as was the case on the previous occasions in the tournament.

Besides, experienced spinner Vettori will also add to the worry of the Kevin Pietersen-led Bangalore side, which was handed a seven-wicket defeat by the Punjab team on Friday.

Former England skipper Pietersen, who was made helmsman of the team after being bought for a whopping $1.5 million, is surely under pressure and do everything to prove their first-match win was not a false dawn.

Their Batting department has been inconsistent so far but the opening pair of Kiwi all-rounder Jesse Ryder, who made 32 in last match, and Robin Uthappa has to do a decent job if the Bangalore team to win the match.

However, Protea Jaques Kallis and Kiwi Ross Taylor are seemingly recapturing their touches and may well come out with some crucial innings in tomorrow's encounter.

Their bowling department is lacking the penetration power since they skittled out the Rajasthan team for a paltry 58 in the first tie, thanks to Anil Kumble's five-for, but failed to do the trick in the subsequent matches.

Forces missed Prabhakaran by whisker: Lanka army

PUDUKUDIYYIRIPPU: Tamil Tigers supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran and his top aides were recently missed by a whisker by the security forces, a top Sri Lankan commander said, claiming that the rebel leader had limited options either to give up or commit suicide.

"We got to know that Prabhakaran had moved through the Pudukudiryirippu-Iranmalai road on a day between March 29-31, just about two days before the army fully laid seige to that area," GoC 58 Division Brig Shavendra Silva said.

"Yes I regret we missed him by a whisker or else things could have been over faster," he said, adding Prabhakaran cannot escape through the road.

Silva said things have come to such a head that women had to hide their son in a hole dug in and covered by the kitched fire place to escape the prying LTTE men on the look out for new Tiger fighters near the 'no-fire zone'.

The senior LTTE leader Daya Master also told the army during interrogation that "only sea tiger leader Soosai, the coordinating LTTE army head Pottu Amman and Prabhakaran's son Charles Anthony are going to stay with him".

"The rest of the senior aides will try to escape as I did," Shavendra Silva quoted Daya Master, the former LTTE media coordinator, to say.

"Yes Prabhakaran lived around here not far ago and people suffered here under him," Silva told reporters who visited the war one.

According to another senior military officer, Prabhakaran is facing "reverses after reverses" in his struggle for a separate Eelam state.

Many Tiger cadres have been forced to give their lives "under duress", since Prabhakaran introduced suicide bombers, mostly young women, and targeted major government installations, including military headquarters and international airport in Sri Colombo, he said.

The media were also allowed a brief chat with the famished looking IDPS passing through the Pudukudiyirippu area.

"The LTTE does not have to tell us anything. We dare not to try to escape as they have sophisticated weapons and we had to wait for our time to come to escape," Arumugam, an IDP, said.

No evidence to suggest India backing Pak rebels: Holbrooke

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan should focus on militancy within its borders instead of worrying about India's presence in Afghanistan as there is no evidence to suggest that New Delhi is backing the extremists, US special envoy Richard Holbrooke has said.

"Pakistan does not have to worry about India in Afghanistan. They need to worry about the miscreants in western Pakistan," Holbrooke said in an interview with Geo News channel at the US state department in Washington.

"Now if the Indians were supporting those miscreants that would be extraordinarily bad (and) really dangerous. But they're not. There is no evidence at all that the Indians are supporting the miscreants in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas or North West Frontier Province or Waziristan. None," he said.

Holbrooke was responding to a question on Pakistan's concerns about India's presence in Afghanistan. He noted that India has been playing a key role in the reconstruction of the war-ravaged country.

"India has given Afghanistan about USD 1 billion in assistance. They're rebuilding the parliament building, they've built a very useful road in the southwestern part of the country leading down towards Iran. They're training agricultural experts, they're giving scholarships. The Indians have published a pamphlet on what they're doing. I don't think that should be cause of concern for Pakistan."

Taliban stop Pak troops from entering Swat

Islamabad, April 25: Taliban fighters Saturday prevented a convoy of security forces from entering their stronghold in the northwestern Swat valley, a day after the Pakistan Army chief pledged to eliminate militants who challenge the writ of the state.

A convoy of seven army trucks was stopped by armed Taliban militants at Qambar, a small town near Mingora, the main city in Swat valley, witnesses and Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said.

Witnesses said the convoy withdrew from Qambar after the Taliban forced the troops to go back, averting any clash.

There was no official reaction to the Taliban preventing the convoy from entering Swat. Sources said local authorities were consulting Taliban leaders to convince them to allow the convoy to move into the area.

The Taliban action could lead to a worsening in the situation as army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani announced yesterday that his force is "determined to root out the menace of terrorism" and "would not allow the militants to dictate terms to the government or impose their way of life on the civil society".

Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told reporters that the deployment of additional troops in Swat is against a peace deal signed in February to introduce Islamic laws in Malakand division, which includes Swat.

121 infiltrators entered India, says Pak terrorist

The Pakistani terrorists, who was arrested during the Gurez (Jammu and Kashmir) encounter in March, revealed in a press conference held by the Army in Srinagar that 121 Pakistani infiltrators have entered India crossing the LoC.

The Army however said that only 31 of them were terrorists, the rest, the army claims were porters and guides who have gone back to Pakistan.

The terrorist, Syed Moinullah, said that he is from Deer district in the North West Frontier Province and had crossed over with a group of terrorists drawn from four organisations, including the LeT and the Jaish.

He also revealed that nine of the terrorists were killed but the rest are roaming free. This confirms the NDTV report earlier this week that more than a hundred terrorists had infiltrated into India in the Gurez sector.

Infiltration by Pakistani terrorists along the LoC and international border has been on the rise in the last couple of months.

In perhaps one of the biggest arms hauls in Jammu and Kashmir in recent times, the Army has recovered a huge quantity of explosives, arms and ammunition from the Shamshabari Range of Gurez Sector.

The haul includes 32 kg of RDX, many AK-47s rifles and grenade launchers among others.

The arrested militant spoke about the operation at the press conference.

"We were sent so commanders here could use us for operations. I was caught when I was trying to return to Pakistan," he said.

He also said that militants who operate in India have nothing to do with Taliban.

Anil Ambani's firm says rivals tried to kill him

Mumbai: A day after Anil Ambani's helicopter was found to have been tampered with, Reliance Communications on Friday claimed business rivals were planning to kill the billionaire industrialist.

Mud and pebbles were found inside the seven-seater VT-RCL Bell 412 helicopter's gear box on Thursday evening.

The company in its complaint claimed that Anil, who is the Chairman of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, and other senior officials were also under threat.

A complaint was filed by senior pilot of Reliance Transport and Travels Private Limited Captain RN Joshi with the Mumbai Police CoMmissioner's office, Maharashtra Chief Minister's office, Maharasthra Home Minister's office, Chief Secretary's office, Joint Commissioner of Police's office and also at the Santa Cruz Police Station.

The complainant claimed that the planned manner in which the pebbles and gravel were put in the filler cap at a height of 10 feet in the gear box clearly showed that some one possibly business rivals were attempting to take the life of Anil Ambani.

The helicopter was standing outside a hangar at the Mumbai Airport, when mud and pebbles were found in the gear box of the helicopter.

Reliance Transports and Travels Private Limited is the owner and operator of helicopter. Airworks India Engineering Private Limited which maintains the Bell 412 helicopter says it has filed a case against one of its own employees for allegedly putting mud and pebbles into the chopper's gear box.

Anil had bought the helicopter for his private use in 2007.

Wipro applies thought, cuts costs but saves jobs

Bangalore:
Companies have cut salaries, said no to promotions and are not giving increments to survive in a shrinking economy. All that is too drastic for Wipro Technologies--India’s third largest software exporter is innovating.

Wipro, as part of its efforts to manage rising HR costs, is giving employees the option of either working fewer days or going on a sabbatical. The offers are part of Wipro's skill augmentation and flex employment or SAFE program launched six months ago. The programme has two components called Project Enrich and Project Rejuvenate.

Enrich focuses on employees who have been on the bench for anywhere between three to six months. These employees can choose to work just 10 days in a month, and take a salary cut of 50 percent on their cost to company.

Wipro says employees opting for Enrich will be absorbed into projects as opportunities arise, after a two-week notice. “We do not see any immediate visibility of them being employed. They are good resources and we don't want to lose them but neither do we want to do anything drastic,” says Pratik Kumar, head of human resources at Wipro.

‘Rejuvenate’ is for senior employees and allows them to take a sabbatical and either join an NGO, or pursue a hobby, and draw just 25 percent of their CTC. Wipro says the response has been good.

“We have been able to get a thousand people interested in this programme. I think this speaks very well (of the programme),” says Kumar.

Wipro had offered employees on the bench at its Kolkata centre the option of joining the company’s BPO arm but this was not well received. Cutting HR costs is important for the company, as it is set to take on 7,000 employees who were offered jobs last year, and 8,000 more in FY10.

Tennis Australia is 'arrogant, irresponsible': India

New Delhi:All India Tennis Association lashed out at Australia for pulling out of next month's Davis Cup tie against India, saying they have acted in an "arrogant" and "irresponsible" manner "by creating a situation solely out of their mind and not based on facts".

AITA also said it would convey its sentiments to the International Tennis Federation in a letter following Australia withdrawing from the May 8-10 Asia-Oceania Group I tie barely a day after the game's governing body rejected its plea to shift the match from Chennai.

"Despite the ITF security team had given an excellent report that India is safe for the Aussie players, they have pulled out of the tie. This indicates a certain order of arrogance and a highly irresponsible action on the part of Tennis Australia," Khanna told reporters.

In a letter sent to AITA, Tennis Australia President Geoff Pollard had cited "high security risk during Indian election" as the reason for pulling out of the tie.

"We asked for the tie to be moved because we have major security concerns for players, particularly during (Indian) election. The ITF decision has left us with no other option but not to send the team. It would be irresponsible of us to send our players into an area of such high risk," Pollard had said in the letter.

But, Khanna was not amused and said TA's decision might have been influenced by the players who do not want to come to India.

"We have got the letter and are extremely disappointed with their decision. The reasons cited for pulling out of the tie reflect their ignorance. They are creating a situation solely out of their mind and not based on facts. We will intimate our sentiments to ITF in writing," he said.

Knight Riders looking to bounce back

CAPE TOWN: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be eager to bounce back from their disappointing Super Over loss against Rajasthan Royals, when they
face runners-up Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Saturday.

Knight Riders came close to winning on Thursday but it was the brilliance of Kamran Khan and Yusuf Pathan, who turned the match in the favour of defending champions Rajasthan Royals.

Knight Riders have just one victory in three matches and are lying in the seventh spot in the eight-team league.

Last year's runner-up Super Kings have also one win in three matches and will be desperately looking for two full points against Knight Riders at the Newlands.

Though their batting has looked good, Super Kings' problem has been their bowling, specially at the death. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will have to do some work to sort out his team's bowling.

"I thought we bowled badly at the death. This is one area we need to improve and I hope the bowlers will pay attention to this. We conceded at least 20 to 30 runs extra," said Dhoni.

The onus once again will be on batsmen Matthew Hayden and Dhoni to put the runs on the board for Super Kings. The absence of England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will be a blow for the Chennai team. Flintoff has been ruled out of the IPL and will fly back home for surgery of a knee injury.

For Knight Riders, skipper Brendon McCullum is yet to shine with the bat and the focus will be on him to give a good start along with Chris Gayle, who has been in terrific touch.

Sourav Ganguly, who came close to winning the match against Royals with a defiant knock, will be eager to prove himself again. Ganguly also played a crucial role with the ball against Kings XI Punjab.

Two key LTTE leaders surrender: Lanka army

COLOMBO: Two key Tamil Tiger officials surrendered Wednesday as Sri Lankan troops pressed a final offensive against the rebels despite an international outcry over the fate of trapped civilians.

Among the top rebels who turned themselves in was the Tigers' main mouthpiece to the outside world, their chief spokesman Velayudam Dayanidi, better known as Daya Master.

Another official, who was an aide to the late head of the Tigers' political wing, S.P. Thamilselvan, also surrendered.

The government's defence spokesman said more than 80,000 people had fled the shrinking patch of territory still controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), saying troops were "rescuing" and not harming civilians caught up in the war.

"Our operations to rescue civilians is continuing," Keheliya Rambukwella told reporters, describing the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as a spent force with just 12 square kilometres (five square miles) of land left.

"The LTTE has lost all its military capabilities. They are fighting a losing battle," he said, adding the government also "strongly believes" that Tamil Tiger leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran, 54, was still in the area.

The defence ministry gave Prabhakaran and his fighters until Tuesday to surrender, but the rebels ignored the deadline and have continued to fight.

The LTTE, who have been fighting for an independent Tamil homeland since 1972, has acknowledged losing ground. But the group has accused the government of killing 1,000 civilians in recent days.

The military insists it has aided the escape of 81,420 men, women and children this week. It said those fleeing were fired on by the rebels, who are alleged to have kept villagers to use as human shields.

The rival claims are hard to verify as independent reporters are not allowed near the conflict zone, but aid agencies have painted a grim picture.

"The situation is nothing short of catastrophic," said Pierre Kraehenbuehl, operations director for the International Committee of the Red Cross.

"What we are seeing is intense fighting in a very small area overcrowded with civilians who have fled there," he said.

He estimated there could be tens of thousands more people still inside rebel-held territory, while facilities for those who had reached relative safety were overstretched.

The United States and other nations have urged both Sri Lankan troops and Tiger rebels not to fire indiscriminately, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has asked that UN staff be allowed to enter the area for relief operations.

"The casualties are certainly in the thousands and have been fairly consistently high running throughout the last couple of months, as the patch of (LTTE) territory has narrowed and really diminished," said Gordon Weiss, the UN spokesman in Colombo.

The apparent endgame in Sri Lanka has triggered protests around the world, with up to 30,000 Tamil demonstrators clogging the Canadian capital Ottawa to press for mediation.

Similar rallies have been held in London and Paris.

The LTTE were once considered as one of the world's most efficient guerrilla outfits, lording over a third of Sri Lanka's territory and running a de facto mini-state.

A Norwegian-brokered truce between the government and the rebels began falling apart in December 2005, and fighting since then has seen the progressive collapse of the rebel army.

Last month the UN's human rights chief said both sides in the conflict may be guilty of war crimes.

Now, Sanjay says sorry to Maya, calls her sister

Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009 at 1555 hrs IST:
In the eye of a storm for his "Jadu ki Jhappi" remarks, Sanjay Dutt apologised on Wednesday for the statement, saying the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister was just like a sister to him.

In the reply sent to the District Magistrate and district election officer Pinki Jowal faxed on Tuesday night, the actor and SP leader apologised for the remarks and said it was a mere dialogue from his Bollywood blockbuster Munnabhai series which were used in the rally to spread a message of love in society.

Saying Mayawati was just like a sister to him, Dutt held that the dialogue was from a brother to a sister to strengthen the bonds.

"Even so, if the dialogue has hurt the sentiments of anyone I apologise for it", Dutt said in his reply.

A show cause notice was served to Dutt for his remarks against the BSP supremo during an April 16 election meeting in Pratapgarh. The district election officer had given him three days time to file his reply.

Maoists strike in Jharkhand, Bihar, WB

Latehar/Patna/Kokata, April 22: Striking on the second phase poll eve, Maoists on Wednesday seized a train carrying nearly 700 passengers in Jharkhand's Latehar district for over four hours and bombed a BDO's office and shot a driver after setting ablaze trucks in Bihar.

The Maoists took control of the Gomo-Mughalsarai BDM train near Hehegarha railway station at about 7:30 AM and released it at 11:39 AM without harming any of the passengers, Senior Divisional Railway Manager, Dhanbad, Neeraj Ambast said. Latehar is about 125 kms from Ranchi.

The train, with nine coaches, was packed to capacity with about 700 passengers on board, Railway PRO in Dhanbad, Amerendra Das said.

A block development office in Bihar's Aurangabad district was blasted by Maoists who set ablaze eight trucks in neighbouring Gaya where they shot dead a driver during a 24-hour bandh called by the ultras in Bihar and Jharkhand to protest killing of their cadres by security forces.

A series of landmine blasts rocked West Bengal's Lalgarh area, about 150 kms from Kolkata, after three CPI-M activists were killed by suspected Maoists in adjoining Salboni region last night in West Midnapore district.

Alarmed by the attacks, Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta reviewed the situation at high-level meeting in New Delhi in naxal-affected areas of Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, where polling will be held on Thursday.

Gupta said to a news agency that helicopters have been station in naxal-hit states to carry out aerial surveillance and provide better logistical support to the security forces and launch prompt measures to counter the Maoists.

"Appropriate security arrangements have been made. The priority is to ensure that the polls are held smoothly and efforts to disrupt the democratic process do not succeed," he said after the meeting.

In widespread violence during the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 16, as many as 19 security force personnel were killed in planned attacks by the Maoists in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar.

Referring to the Latehar train seige, A K Chandra, CPRO, East Central Zone of the Railways, said, "The train had been disable by disconnection of the break pipe." Security forces, including CRPF, had moved from nearby areas of Patratu, Bharwadi, Latehar and Daltonganj to the site immediately after the incident, he said.

Latehar Deputy Commissioner Sarvendu Tathagat said, "The target of the Maoists was the police....The police forces were moving cautiously."

According to police, a group of naxalites had warned the station master against any movement of trains during their bandh.

CSK look to keep winning momentum against Daredevils

DURBAN: After bouncing back from their opening match defeat, last year's runners-up Chennai Super Kings will look to maintain their winning
momentum as they take on Delhi Daredevils
in their Indian Premier League match on Thursday.

Chennai Super Kings had a shaky start when they lost to Mumbai Indians in the IPL opener but Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men bounced back in the next match drubbing the Bangalore Royal Challengers by 92 runs.

With purple cap wearer Australian Matthew Hayden in great touch even after his retirement, CSK have no less a batting firepower than the formidable looking batting line-up of the Daredevils and cracker of a match is on the cards tomorrow.

Hayden, the current leading scorer, smashed the second fastest fifty in IPL en route to his 35-ball 65 and in company with Parthiv Patel plundered 106 runs for the opening wicket against Bangalore.

Chennai have some fine all-rounders in England's Andrew Flintoff and South African Albie Morkel and with left-hander Suresh Raina also finding his form with a valuable 28 against Bangalore, there doesn't seem to be any major chink in their batting resources.

Delhi Daredevils have also some in-form batsmen in their ranks with skipper Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir showing no problems in scoring 58 runs in 4.5 overs to notch up a 10-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab in their rain-truncated first match.

Even though rain Gods played a role in the win, Sehwag had made it clear that they have the firepower to chase down the original score of 104 in 12 overs.

The pundits' favourites, Delhi also boast of some quality players like big hitter David Warner and old warhorse Glenn McGrath, who are still to make an appearance in the second edition of the Twenty20 extravaganza.

Among pacers, the Daredevils will depend on exuberance of Indian youngsters Pradeep Sangwan, Yo Mahesh and Australian Dirk Nannes, while Super Kings will have the task entrusted on Manpreet Gony, Laxmipathi Balaji and all-rounders Flintoff and Morkel.

And with spinners dominating the game so far, tomorrow's match would also be a clash between New Zealander Daniel Vettori and Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan, both scalping three wickets in their last matches.

Gilchrist leads Deccan charge

NEW DELHI: Deccan Chargers lost two wickets but captain Adam Gilchrist hit a swashbuckling half-century to take his team to 91/2 in 10 overs in
the eighth match of the second edition of the Indian Premier League against Bangalore Royal Challengers at Newlands in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Batting first after winning the toss, Gilchrist reached his 50 off 31 deliveries with the help of 3 sixes and 6 fours. He is still at the crease on 58 that has come off 35 balls, studded with 4 sixes and 6 fours.

Jesse Ryder, who was not played in the last match, struck with his first ball when he had VVS Laxman (5) caught by Dale Steyn at long off.

Praveen Kumar took some beating from Gilchrist before he changed ends and trapped Herschelle Gibbs plumb in front of the wicket. Gibbs hit a six and a four in his 13-run knock that came off 7 balls.

Bangalore have replaced R Vinay Kumar and Ross Taylor with Karan Sharma and Jesse Ryder.

Teams:

Deccan Chargers: Adam Gilchrist (Capt.), Herschelle Gibbs, Scott Styris, VVS Laxman, Rohit Sharma, Venugopal Rao, Harmeet Singh, Pragyan Ojha, RP Singh, Ravi Teja, Fidel Edwards.

Bangalore Royal Challengers:
Kevin Pietersen (Capt.), Jesse Ryder, Robin Uthappa, Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli, Karan Sharma, Praveen Kumar, Anil Kumble, Dale Steyn, Rajesh Bishnoi.

We will never surrender: LTTE

COLOMBO:
The Tamil Tiger rebels will never surrender, the head of the separatists' peace secretariat said on Tuesday, despite their being
outgunned in an apparent final offensive by the Sri Lankan military.

Seevaratnam Puleedevan, secretary-general of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) peace secretariat, urged the international community to intervene by forcing a permanent ceasefire, which Sri Lanka has ruled out.

The military says around 50,000 people have fled the Tiger-held area so far since Monday, and had given the LTTE until noon Tuesday, a deadline already passed, to surrender or be destroyed. "LTTE will never surrender and we will fight and we have the confidence that we will win with the help of the Tamil people," Puleedevan said over phone.

He said he was near the border of the no-fire zone in Sri Lanka's northeastern coast. The LTTE is surrounded there by around 50,000 troops expected to soon deal a final blow to the Tigers, who have waged war since 1983 to create a separate state for Sri Lankan Tamils. LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran was inside the no-fire zone, Puleedevan said.

"He is with us and he is directing the war against the Sri Lankan armed forces and providing a lot of support and assistance to the people," Puleedevan said. The LTTE founder created its culture of committing suicide by taking cyanide in case of capture, and of pioneering suicide bombing as a weapon of war. The latter has landed the LTTE on U.S., EU, Indian and Canadian terrorist lists. Puleedevan accused the military of using Tamil civilians as human shields, an accusation the United Nations, a host of western countries and people who have escaped LTTE-held areas have made against the rebels. "The time is running out for the international community to intervene, because you know that a bloodbath is going to happen," he said.

Military spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara categorically rejected the accusation. "We have never used civilians as human shields. We were on the other side and the LTTE was shooting and killing people and using them as human shields. We went in and rescued them. How can anyone say we were using civilians as human shields?" he said. Puleedevan also accused the government of killing 1,000 people and wounding 2,000 on Monday via shelling.

The government has denied that and accuses the Tigers of creating a humanitarian crisis to build international pressure for a ceasefire to try and rearm, as they have done in the past. The United Nations and witnesses who have escaped Tiger areas have repeatedly said the LTTE was shooting people who try to flee and forcing others including children as young as 15 to fight.

"People are giving full support to us and they are fighting with us, because the LTTE is fighting for them," Puleedevan said. "That's why they are voluntarily joining and fighting with us. We are not taking any children with us in our armed forces."

Sri Lanka's air force on Monday released video taken from an unmanned drone showing what it said were people streaming out of the no-fire zone and congregating by the thousands at an army reception centre just outside of it. Another one said showed what the air force said were Tiger gunmen shooting toward hundreds of people corralled tightly together at the edge of the surf. Muzzle flashes could be seen.

Oracle Wants To Be The Apple Of The Enterprise, But It Just Became IBM

April 20, 2009:
Larry Ellison has always wanted to be the Steve Jobs of the enterprise. With this morning’s announcement that Oracle will buy Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion, he took a big step towards making Oracle more of a soup-to-nuts provider of enterprise technology. With Sun, he will now be able to build and package together everything from chips and servers to operating systems, Java middleware, databases, and enterprise applications.

Here is the money quote from Ellison on the deal:

Oracle will be the only company that can engineer an integrated system - applications to disk - where all the pieces fit and work together so customers do not have to do it themselves. Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up

Like Apple, Oracle wants to take away complexity for its customers and bundle the entire IT stack neatly together so that it works without hassles and is optimized for Oracle’s software. With this deal, Ellison has come full circle from his early-1990s mantra of “best-of-breed” systems, which he abandoned long ago. Rather than look like Apple with its dedication to making the perfect product, Oracle just became IBM. It will use Sun’s existing server market share to push Oracle databases and software, and bundle it all with IT services. Sure, it will continue to support Dell and HP and even rival enterprise software, but the sales pitch will be around the bundled product. If that turns out to be a superior product at a lower price, then both Oracle and customers will win out. But to the extent that it takes away choice from IT buyers, it could be an even tougher sell than convincing them to give up their beloved Blackberries for an iPhone.

How different really is Oracle buying Sun than if IBM had bought it, other than the price? Sun’s powerful servers are a way to sell expensive software—always have been, always will be. A big motivation for the deal was to acquire Sun’s Solaris operating system and Java. As hardware margins keep getting squeezed, that software component becomes more and more important. At least with Oracle, Sun will stay in the Silicon Valley family, so to speak.

But what may be the most valuable part of the deal from Oracle’s perspective, although Ellison hardly mentioned it, is MySQL. Oracle now owns the open-source database Sun acquired last year for $1 billion. As MySQL grows in popularity, it keeps disrupting Oracle’s high-end database business from below. Now Oracle can at least try to disrupt itself, or kill MYSQL (which would be a bone-headed move).

What makes more sense is a two-pronged approach: On the high-end, sell highly optimized Sun servers running Solaris, Oracle databases, and Oracle enterprise apps. On the low-end, sell MySQL on Dell and HP servers running Linux.

Another unanswered question is what will happen to Sun’s cloud computing efforts, given Ellison’s disdain for the term.

Layoffs at Satyam last option: TechM

HYDERABAD: The new owner of Satyam Computer, Tech Mahindra, has said it has adequate working capital to meet the expenses of the company it is a
cquiring, and laying off Satyam's employees will the last option only.

"We have the requisite capital to meet the expenses including salaries. The cash flow will be maintained," Tech Mahindra Director and President of the IT sector, (Mahindra Group) Ulhas Yargop said.

Tech Mahindra Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Vineet Nayyar said after taking over Satyam, it will go into the entire gamut of the company and may decide upon retrenchment of employees, which would be the last option.

“At this stage, I can't tell it. But to make the company viable we may take some decisions and this will be last option," Nayyar said.

However, he said they would look for more and more customers. Reacting to a query on the status-quo of liabilities of the Raju family, if any, Nayyar said "As far as we are concerned we are not aware of what that liability is.”

"The forensic and investigative authorities are looking into the inflow and outflow of cash. We don't know anything. As and when that happens the law will deal with it," he said.

Answering to another query over job offers made to freshers to be hired by Satyam, Nayyar said "The fact is that it is the first time I am hearing about it. We will certainly look into that once the whole process is over. It's too early to say anything on this."

Once nominees of Tech Mahindra are appointed to the Board upon the closing of the initial allotment of shares to Tech Mahindra, they will focus
at strengthening corporate governance in the company apart from meeting customers and Satyamites at major locations, worldwide, Nayyar said.

"We would like to reassure stakeholders that priority focus is being given to retaining critical customer-facing resources, so that the customer experience continues undisturbed.

"This is also a new beginning for Satyam and TechMahindra. Both companies will now have access to enhanced talent and scale to compete in the global market," Nayyar said.

Tech Mahindra's investment in Satyam marks an expansion of the firm's interests in other vertical markets, including financial services, manufacturing and healthcare, among others, he said.

Earlier, government appointed Satyam-Board Chairman Kiran Karnik said the Board has given to Tech Mahindra, a list of 100 key employees to be retained.

Chairman of Tech Mahindra, Anand Mahindra said he along with his colleagues toured Satyam's Hyderabad campus and addressed associates globally through a live telecast and also interacted with leaders, adding "It was a unique opportunity and it has provided great amount of relief and enthusiasm."

TCS profits up 4.6 pc, says will focus on cost-cutting

Beijing: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT outsourcing firm, said on Tuesday that price competition will force it to focus on cost reductions in coming years.

Even though competition is intensifying as customers seek cost reductions, Tata's earnings in fiscal 2010 should be higher than the year earlier, Chief Executive S Ramadorai said after Tata announced profits that fell short of expectations.

"I would like to see a 10 per cent year-on-year improvement" in cost reduction, he said. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd posted a 4.6 per cent rise in quarterly profit, but it expects prices to fall by lower single digits in the coming year.

"Profits will continue to rise, but at a slow pace," he said. "That is what we hope. "The challenges are definitely cost rationalisation and offshore leveraging," Ramadorai added.

Despite the pressure on prices, he said the company would try to avoid being drawn into a price war with competitors. "Growth has come down dramatically from what we were used to ... So automatically, the focus of the organisation has been on looking at our internal efficiencies," Ramadorai said.

Prices of IT outsourcing services will shrink five per cent to 20 per cent through 2010 due to the uncertain economic climate, IT budget constraints and competition between vendors, research company Gartner predicted last month.

TCS's headcount has more than doubled over the past three years to about 144,500, but in fiscal 2010 – which began on April 1 – the company expects to add only about 16,000-17,000 new net hires, about half the number in the previous year.

The pressure on Tata is heavy because 43 per cent of its business comes from the global financial industry, which has taken the brunt of the economic crisis.

India's $60-billion sector, which provides services from software coding to managing computer networks and call centres, faces weak demand, cut-rate prices and rising competition from global rivals such as IBM.

Loans could become cheaper

In a move that could bring further relief to the home, auto and corporate borrowers, the Reserve Bank today cut short-term lending (repo) and borrowing (reverse repo) rates by 25 basis points. In its annual credit policy for 2009-10, the RBI reduced the repo rate to 4.75 per cent and reverse repo to 3.25 per cent with immediate effect, while retaining other key rates like the cash reserve ratio, the percentage of deposits that banks keep with the central bank.

In view of the ongoing global economic slowdown, the central bank has pegged the economic growth rate forecast for the current fiscal to 6 per cent, against 6.5-6.7 per cent estimated for 2008-09.

"Any upturn in growth momentum is unlikely in view of the projected contraction in global demand during 2009, particularly decline in trade," RBI Governor D Subbarao said in the policy, adding private investment demand was expected to remain subdued.
"The policy instance of the RBI indicates further softening of interest rates," Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) Executive Director S C Sinha said.

The good news, however, is on inflation, which is projected to remain at around 3 per cent in the medium term and 4 per cent by the end of March 2010.

Kolkata Knight Riders were 79/1 in 9.2 overs in pursuit of 159 when rain stopped play.

West Indian captain Chris Gayle gave Kolkata Knight Riders a blazing start scoring 44 off 26 balls with the help of 4 huge sixes and 2 fours. With him at the crease is Brad Hodge (10).

Man of the Match Gayle put the Kings XI Punjab attack to the sword hitting Irfan Pathan for 2 fours and a six off successive deliveries and was dropped on 2 by Karan Goel at square leg in the second over and on 32 by wicket keeper Kumar Sangakkara in the seventh over.

McCullum brought up the 50 for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 6th over by Vikramjeet Malik with a four over the covers. Next ball he gave himself room and hit a flat six over point. McCullum tried to cut the next delivery, but edged to keeper Kumar Sangakkara to take the catch. The Kolkata Knight Riders captain hit 2 sixes and a four in his 21-run knock that came off 16 balls.

Earlier, Kings XI Punjab scored 158/6 in 20overs. Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene hit a six and 3 fours in his unbeaten 31-run knock that came off 19 balls.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly took the bowling honours for Kolkata Knight Riders with figures of 2/24.

The Kings XI Punjab total was built on the 56-run partnership for the fourth wicket between captain Yuvraj Singh and Kumar Sangakkara, who came together at the crease after Ganguly took 2 wickets in one over.

The partnership broke when Sangakkara was run out after scoring 26 runs off 24 balls with the help of 2 fours.

Yuvraj mistimed a pull from outside off-stump to deep mid-wicket for Yashpal Singh to take the catch. The Kings XI Punjab captain hit 2 sixes and 3 fours in his 38-run knock that came off 28 balls.

Sourav Ganguly took two wickets in his first over to halt the Kings XI Punjab run charge who were 67/3 in 10 overs.

Ishant Sharma dismissed Karan Goel for a duck in the third over by having him caught at first slip. Goel went for a big hit but the ball bounced a bit more, took an edge and was flying over the slips but the tall Chris Gayle, just raised his hands to take the catch.

Irfan Pathan raced to 32 off 16 deliveries with the help of and a six and 5 fours till Ganguly was introduced in the attack. Taking full advantage of the overcast conditions and the bouncy pitch, Ganguly took 2 wickets in 4 deliveries to peg back the Kings XI Punjab.

Ganguly took his first wicket when Pathan slog swept to deep square leg where Murali Kartik jumped in the air just in front of the rope to take a good catch.

Two deliveries later, Ravi Bopara (15) looked to cut but edgeed for keeper and captain Brendon McCullum to take the catch to reduce the Kings XI Punjab to 48/3 in 6.4 overs.

Kings XI Punjab were batting after Kolkata Knight Riders McCullum won the toss and elected to bowl first.

While Kings XI Punjab are unchanged from the last match, Kolkata Knight Riders have replaced Ajit Agarkar with Yashpal Singh.
